July 9, 2012 (1:25 p.m.) -- A fire that began at Metate Lane and Carriage Road in Poway shortly before 1 p.m. today has grown to seven acres, Greg George, Emergency Resource Officer at San Diego Fire Department told ECM.  "It is still in fairly light fuel but it is growing," he said.

LAKE JENNINGS TO OPEN DAILY JULY 30-AUG. 12

July 9, 2012 (Lakeside)--Usually open only weekends and holidays, Lake Jennings will be open every day between July 30 and August 12 from 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.  For only nominal fee, you can pack a picnic, enjoy marvelous vistas, watch the wildlife, take the 5-mile hike around the lake, or just relax with a barbecue in a wilderness just a short drive from San Diego and East County’s urban areas.

For only a few more dollars you can launch your boat ($8) or rent one (motorboat $40, rowboat $19), dip a line in the water — catching fish may be another story (fishing permit and state license fees apply) — or enjoy a paddle boat excursion around the 160 acre lake’s surface ($10/hour).

CAL FIRE ISSUES NO BURN PROCLAMATION DUE TO HIGH FIRE DANGER

July 9, 2012 (San Diego’s East County)—Effective immediately, Cal Fire has issued a no-burn proclamation for all state responsibility lands in San Diego and Imperial Counties.  All open burning is banned and campfires are restricted to designated campfire facilities in established public campgrounds.

GROSSMONT HEALTHCARE DISTRICT BOARD APPROVES ENERGY-SAVING COGENERATION EQUIPMENT AT GROSSMONT HOSPITAL

 July 8, 2012 La Mesa) -- The Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD) board of directors on Friday, June 29, 2012, unanimously approved plans to greatly improve energy efficiency and reliability at Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa.
 
The GHD board approved financing and a purchase agreement that will replace decades-old equipment with new, state-of-the-art cogeneration energy equipment at the regional medical facility. Estimated to cost $18 million to install, the hospital’s cogeneration project is projected to save millions of dollars in energy costs and provide a reliable source for up to 95 percent of the hospital’s electricity needs, GHD officials said.

July 8, 2012 (San Diego)-- San Francisco Superior Court Judge Richard Kramer ruled on July 2 that the San Diego County Water Authority’s legal challenge to the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California’s 2011 and 2012 wholesale water rates will move forward, despite another round of pre-trial motions by MWD that sought to dismiss most of the case.

FIRE IN OTAY MESA

Update 10:30 p.m.  The fire is now 20 acres and additional resources have been ordered to the scene.

July 7, 2012 (Otay) – Cal Fire is at the scene of a vegetation fire reported at 8:20 p.m. just east of Otay Mesa in Tin Can Canyon, a remote area. The fire is currently 3-5 acres; no structures are in the vicinity. 

Cause is under investigation, said Battalion Chief Nick Schuler.

July 7, 2012 (San Diego) – This Independence Day promised the usual smell of barbecued burgers and dogs, the taste of chilled drinks, the glisten of suntan lotion, the sound of children playing, and the smoke, the lights and the crackle of pyrotechnics. Across the nation, families celebrated their independence, partied with friends, and enjoyed the freedoms that we far too often take for granted. 
 
But this Independence Day meant much more for Sara Kruzan – a woman who has never known independence, has never enjoyed freedom, and has fallen through the cracks of our society.

TRANSIENT ARRESTED FOR THROWING EXPLOSIVE DEVICE AT TROLLEY IN LA MESA

July 6, 2012 (La Mesa) – La Mesa Police today announced the arrest of Darron Willams, 19, a transient accused of hurling a bottle bomb at a trolley station in La Mesa on July 3 shortly before 8 p.m. The device, a 16-ounce plastic bottle filled with magnesium and water, exploded at the Spring Street Trolley Station at 4250 Spring Street.

July 6, 2012 (El Cajon) -- Cuyamaca College cross-country coach Tim Seaman, a two-time Olympian race walker, will be traveling to the Games in London, but this time it will be as a coach instead of as a competitor.

Athletes competing in the  men’s 20,000-meter race walk at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Oregon last week included, from left, Tyler Sorensen;  Cuyamaca College graduate Nick Christie; Cuyamaca College cross country coach Tim Seaman, and the winner of the 12-man race and the lone qualifier for the London Games, Trevor Barron.  Seaman, who has competed twice in the Olympics, is the coach for these three young athletes.

Largest Outdoor Marijuana Grow Seizure on Private Property in San Diego County History
 
July 6, 2012 (Warner Springs) – On June 30 and July 1, 2012, DEA/NTF (Narcotics Task Force) conducted a marijuana eradication operation in the unincorporated area of Warner Springs called Sunshine Summit. A State of California search warrant was obtained for the 40 acre parcel of private property which concealed the marijuana plants.
