RURAL FIRE STATIONS GET FOUR NEW QUICK-ATTACK VEHICLES

HIGHWAY 67 CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

June 14, 2016 (Ramona) -- Motorists traveling along SR-67 at Dye and Highland Valley Road in Ramona may have already noticed indications of construction at the intersection as part of a major upgrade project that includes road widening and more.  Crews placed construction signs the first week of June and the speed limit has been reduced from 55 to 45 mph for the safety of commuters and highway workers. June 14, 2016 (San Diego's East County) -- Very hot and potentially dangerous conditions are forecast for Sunday through the early part of next week as a strong ridge of high pressure develops over the Southwest. Monday is expected to be the hottest day, the National Weather Service in San Diego predicts.

Highs near the coast will be in the upper 80s to low 90s, in the 90s in the mountains, around 100 to 110 in the valleys and high desert, and over 115 in the low deserts.

SIG ALERT: CRASH SHUTS DOWN WILDCAT CANYON IN LAKESIDE

East County Wildfire & Emergency Alerts

Update 8:10 a.m.  Big-rig tow is nearly at the scene. After towing away vehicles, road shutdown will be changed to one-way closure for next 10-12 hours while power line repairs are made, per CHP website. SDG&E will handle the traffic one-way closure.

Update 7:30 a.m. -- The fires are now out.  Two people have been transported to trauma centers with injuries.

June 14, 2016 (Lakeside) -- 6:40 a.m. A SIG ALERT has been issued for a two-vehicle crash on Wildcat Canyon at Willow Road in Lakeside. One vehicle is on its roof, the other 100 feet down an anbankment with people trapped inside. The crash sparked several small brush fires and knocked down power lines, causing an outage to 21 customers with power restoration estimated at 9:30 a.m. per SDG&E.

Lakeside and Heartland Fire are on the scene.

GRAND JURY REPORT SLAMS EAST COUNTY CITIES' “LACK OF RESPONSE TO HOMELESSNESS”

June 13, 2016 (San Diego’s East County) – The San Diego County Grand Jury has issued a report critical of four cities in East County for failing to provide adequately for the needs of homeless people, including failing to apply for federal funds available for that purpose. The Grand Jury report, titled “East County Cities’ Lack of Response to Homelessness,” also made recommendations to improve the situation.

June 12, 2016 (San Diego) -- The worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history is being investigated as both a terror attack and a hate crime.  Omar Mateen, 29, a U.S. citizen born to Afghan immigrants, killed 50 people and injured 53 during a gay pride celebration at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida early this morning. 

The gunman called 911 and pledged allegiance to ISIS, the Islamic state before the massacre, the FBI has indicated.

The massacre has prompted outpourings of sympathy across the nation and here in San Diego.

June 12, 2016 (San Diego's East County) - The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has released a Roll Call video to all law enforcement nationwide about the dangers of improperly handling fentanyl and its deadly consequences.  Acting Deputy Administrator Jack Riley and two local police detectives from New Jersey appear on the video to urge any law enforcement personnel who come in contact with fentanyl or fentanyl compounds to take the drugs directly to a lab.

June 12, 2016 (San Diego's East County) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Vaxchora, a vaccine for the prevention of cholera caused by serogroup O1 in adults 18 through 64 years of age traveling to cholera-affected areas. Vaxchora is the only FDA-approved vaccine for the prevention of cholera.

CAL FIRE SUSPENDS BURN PERMITS IN SAN DIEGO AND IMPERIAL COUNTIES

June 12, 2016 (San Diego’s East County) -- While recent rains this winter and spring have been a welcome sight in California, drought conditions continue to increase fire danger in the region prompting CAL FIRE to suspend all burn permits for outdoor residential burning within the State Responsibility Area of San Diego and Imperial Counties. This suspension takes effect June 13, 2016 and bans all residential outdoor burning of landscape debris like branches and leaves.
