EDITORIAL: WILL LA MESA BAN BOOZE AT TUESDAY'S HEARING? CITY SHOWS ITS HYPOCRISY

By Joe Morris

October 25, 2009 – On Tuesday, La Mesa’s City Council will vote on whether to ban drinking alcoholic beverages in public places—unless you fork over a $150 fee and apply two weeks in advance for your guzzling privileges. A City Manager’s report argues that tipsy people pose potential threats to others and cause police to waste time responding to calls about public intoxication.

How ironic, coming from a city that hosts an annual Oktoberfest touting public drinking and revelry; this year’s marketing slogan was “the big beer garden is back.”

WILD RIDE: KIDNAPPED SHELL STATION OWNER ESCAPES ROBBER

POLICE CHASE NABS SUSPECT; PAROLEE MAY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR OTHER AREA CRIMES

October 15, 2009 (La Mesa) Crime didn't pay for a lone gunman who robbed a Shell gas station clerk at gunpoint around 12:15 today. The suspect took money from the register and fled. The station manager arrived just before police and went looking for the robber in his own car.  Coincidentally, he was flagged down by a man a few blocks away, on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Being a good citizen, the manager gave the stranger a ride back toward the Shell gas station so the man could buy gas—not realizing that that the stranded man was actually the robbery suspect. When the suspect realized he was being returned to the crime scene where police were, he kidnapped the gas station manager and forced him to drive west on interstate 8--leading to a harrowing series of events.

“Welcome aboard, Nugget…I’ll bet you’ve never been aboard a carrier before…”

October 13, 2009 (La Mesa) -- San Diego may be the nation’s 9th largest city, but it is still a Navy town at heart. The graceful passage of San Diego’s homeport aircraft carriers down the harbor channel, past Ballast Point and out to sea is one of our area’s most awe-inspiring sights. And any one of those ships could have a nugget aboard.  Navy and Marine jargon is often heard in our community. In Navy-speak, a nugget is a new pilot on his first tour of duty. Patricia Newman’s just-released book is a fun-filled introduction to the basics of carrier operations, centered on the heart-warming story of one particular nugget.

The second you walk in, you feel like an honored guest. Everyone I’ve spoken to tells the tale of how the owner personally welcomed them and came by the table to ask if everything is to their liking. Our experience confirmed the owner’s reputation for not only dishing up fine food, but also warm hospitality.
