RADIO DAZE: THEATRICAL PRODUCTION FEB. 10 TO RECALL GLORY DAYS OF RADIO

January 14, 2011 (La Mesa) – La Mesa Arts Alliance will present its third annual theatrical production, “Radio Daze…Again” on Thursday, February 10 in the La Mesa Community Center Arbor Room.

“Last year’s Radio Daze was so enthusiastically received that we decided dot do another evening of the wonderful old scripts from the days when the radio was the major source of information and entertainment in the home,” said LMAA' spokeperson Patricia O’Reilly. “It is a trip down Memory Lane for some of us and an introduction for others to a whole new world.”

January 13, 2011 (La Mesa) -- La Mesa Community Services and Center for Community Solutions is offering a personal safety class on Monday January 31st from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.

Personal safety is a set of awareness, assertiveness, verbal confrontational skills, safety strategies, and physical techniques that can enable a person to successfully avoid,  resist, escape, and survive violent assaults.

15TH ANNUAL LA MESA MULTICULTURAL FESTIVAL JAN. 16 HONORS DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

 

January 12, 2011 (La Mesa)--The City of La Mesa’s annual Multicultural Festival in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr will be heldr Sunday, Jan. 16th from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. at the La Mesa Community Center, 4975 Memorial Drive. The 15th annual event, presented by the City of La Mesa Human Relations Advisory Commission, is free and open to the public.

 

Featured entertainment includes appearances by the Helix Charter High School Bagpipe Band, Moreton Bay Fig Morris, an English Folk Dance Troupe, and Axis Gospel Singers. Dr. James Kitchen, Vice President, Student Affairs, San Diego State University, will serve as guest speaker.

IT’S “SOUPER-BOWL” SEASON FOR LOCAL CHURCH YOUTH

 

January 9, 2011 (La Mesa)--For the fourth consecutive year, youths at United Church of Christ of La Mesa (UCCLM) are active participants in the “Souper Bowl of Caring,” a month-long, nation-wide program in which donations of food, goods, and money are solicited to benefit local service agencies.

PEDESTRIAN KILLED, LA MESA RESIDENT ARRESTED FOR DRUNK DRIVING

 

 

January 1, 2011 (La Mesa) Updated 8 p.m.– Dana Lohner, 48, of La Mesa has been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving after she struck and killed Kelly McPherson, 53, a pedestrian from Mission Valley.  McPherson died at the scene.  

 

Lohner, who was driving a Ford Mustang was booked into the Las Colinas Jail.

MISSING TEEN GIRL: LAST SEEN AT GROSSMONT CENTER LAST NIGHT

 

December 23, 2010 (La Mesa) – Shortly after midnight at 12:07 a.m., La Mesa Police received a report of a missing 19-year-old woman, Sara Rafou of El Cajon. Her car was found abandoned in the parking lot at Grossmont Center, near the Bank of America where she works. According to La Mesa Patch.com, she left work at 6:30 p.m.last night and has not been seen since.

JUVENILE ASSAULTED & ROBBED IN LA MESA

 

December 21, 2010 (La Mesa)—La Mesa Police Department responded to a robbery near the Jack in the Box restaurant located at 6987 University Av., La Mesa around 5:20 p.m. today. According to police, three juveniles approached a 16-year-old and demanded his cell phone. One suspect grabbed the victim’s phone while the other two kicked and punched him. The victim had abrasions and some bruising from the incident.

DRIVER HITS TWO TREES, SENDS ENGINE FLYING IN LA MESA

December 18, 2010 (La Mesa) – A driver lost control of his vehicle on a rain-slicked roadway in the 5800 block of Lake Murray Blvd. at 1:15 this morning. The vehicle, which was traveling southbound, struck a large tree on the center median, then spun out of control and hit another tree. The force of the impact dislodged the engine and transmission. The engine was fond in the driveway of a home about 25 yards away.

LA MESA GALLERY HOSTS WINE-TASTING TONIGHT TO HELP VILLAGE IN UGANDA

December 17, 2010 (La Mesa) – “Food, wine, art and a chance to talk with local people who are going about making the world a better place, one village at a time…what could be more in the holiday spirit?” asks an invitation from Shannon O’Dunn, owner of O’Dunn Art in La Mesa. Tonight from 5-7 p.m., she will host a wine-tasting event to benefit H.U.G.S. (Helping Ugandans Grow Stronger). The organization is raising funds to build a bakery in western Uganda that will provide jobs for women and girls in this impoverished area.

CLERK WITH SCREW DRIVER FOILS ROBBERY BY MAN WITH PHONY GUN

 

December 11, 2010 (La Mesa) – This morning at 3 a.m., a man wearing a black bandana tried to rob the Shell Station at 5302 Lake Murray Blvd. The clerk noticed that the “weapon” held by the suspect was a glove folded in the shape of a gun. So when the would-be thief demanded money, the clerk armed himself with a screw driver and told the suspect to leave.

DRIVER EVADES POLICE IN HIGH-SPEED CHASE THROUGH LA MESA

 

December 3, 2010 (La Mesa)-- La Mesa Police were involved in a vehicle pursuit through La Mesa. An officer attempted to stop a black BMW for running a red light at the intersection of University Avenue and Allison Avenue at 8:20 last night. When the officer initiated his emergency lights and siren, in an attempt to stop the vehicle, the driver fled.

Store targeted by measure reveals today that it is going out of business

December 1, 2010 (La Mesa) – On December 14 at 4 p.m., La Mesa’s City Council will consider an ordinance proposed by San Diego Stop Puppy Mills. The proposed law would prohibit pet stores from buying dogs from puppy mills and other breeders.

 

Since February 2009, the group has been protesting against Pet Works in Grossmont Center, alleging that the store sells dogs raised in puppy mills with inhumane conditions. Today, East County Magazine contacted Pet Works and learned that the store plans to shut down.

ROCKY ROAD: LANES BLOCKED ON I-8 IN LA MESA

 

November 29, 2010 (La Mesa) -- All but one eastbound lane on I-8 at Spring Street have been shut down late tonight due to football-sized rocks spilled by a dump truck, CHP reports. A Sig-Alert has been issued, along with a long-term closure order in order to clean up the debris.

FIRE CREW FINDS GAS LEAK IN LA MESA

 

November 29, 2010 (La Mesa)—A Heartland Fire & Rescue engine from La Mesa was driving northbound on Bancroft Drive when crew members smelled a strong odor of natural gas yesterday morning. The fire crew stopped to investigate the smell and determined that there was gas coming from underground at 5033 Bancroft Drive.

ENDING NOT SO SWEET FOR YUM-YUM DOUGHNUT THIEF

 

November 23, 2010 (La Mesa) – A 17-year-old has been arrested after attempting to rob the Yum-Yum Doughnut store for the second day in a row.

 

Yesterday 10:50 a.m., the teen stole a tip-jar from the store at 7550 El Cajon Blvd. According to La Mesa Police, he told the employee that he was sorry, but had no money and needed the cash. The employee and suspect struggled briefly over the tip jar, which contained about $10.
