November 6, 2015 (Casa do Oro) -- Efforts of local teens with the East County Youth Coalition have spurred action with residents and business owners in Casa de Oro. What started as a neighborhood assessment of 12 of the19 licensed alcohol businesses on Campo Road by the teens has led to questions by community members. They want to know why businesses and property owners are not meeting business standards related to advertising, trash, graffiti and loitering.
The diverse group met for the first time late September. Now they are closely examining options for improving their community’s quality of life. Another meeting is planned for Thursday, November 12 at 6 p.m in the Casa de Oro Library.

October 14, 2015 (La Mesa) –The bodies of Marshelle Newby, 56, and a second female were found inside a home on Avoyer Place in Casa de Oro near Mt. Helix Wednesday morning. Newby worked as a legal secretary at the District Attorney’s criminal division for the past 23 years.
10 News reports that family and a neighbor identified the second body as Newby’s 16-year-old special needs granddaughter, Emily, whom she has raised as her own.
Tanya Sierra, public information officer for DA Bonnie Dumanis, stated, “Marshelle Newby was an outstanding DA employee for 23 years. Our office is grieving and our hearts go out to her family and friends,” KUSI reports.

May 25, 2014 (San Diego’s East County)--The Community Planning Group for Rancho San Diego, Mt. Helix and Casa de Oroneeds volunteer members to represent the community in planning and land use issues. The group meets the first Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. It is a fifteen member advisory body reporting to the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. Applicants must be registered voters residing in the community.

March 24, 2014 (Casa de Oro)--Reina Lisa Menasche, radio host for East County Magazine’s “Bookshelf” radio program on KNSJ, 89.1 FM, will discuss, dramatize, and sign her new novel, Silent Bird, at the Casa de Oro Library on Saturday, March 29 at 10 a.m.
Reina Menasche calls her first love “writing fiction,” though she fulfills many other artistic and professional roles. In addition to hosting “Bookshelf” (highlighting “local literary luminaries—and some great books to read!”), she is also a social worker, university instructor, and actress. Her first novel, Twice Begun, was a finalist in the 2013 San Diego Book Awards, and her new novel, Silent Bird, won the Outstanding Fiction Award from the Southern California Writers Conference in 2009.

January 10, 2013 (Casa de Oro) – A destroyed half of a resident in the 4100 block of Avoyer Place in Casa de Oro this morning. At first, residents thought smoke in the kitchen area was due to cooking, until one went outside and saw smoke coming from under the garage. Opening the door, he saw fire erupt into massive flames which quickly spread from the garage into the attic and home.
“With the screams of ‘fire’, family members began to evacuate,” said Leonard Villareal with San Miguel Fire District. “Residents inside the home had to carry the elderly female homeowner to safety. Another neighbor entered the home and carried a young woman who was asleep a back bedroom to safety. January 10, 2012 (Casa de Oro) – The San Diego Sheriff’s Department is investigating an “apparent homicide” in Spring Valley. Deputies responded to a call at 5:30 p.m. of a fight at a residence in the 3600 block of Cordoba Avenue. A fatally injured victim found inside died a short time later.
Authorities have not yet released details on the victim or the cause of death.

September 20, 2011 (Spring Valley) 8:25 p.m. -- San Diego Sheriff’s ASTREA helicopter, a K-9 unit from National City Police and a total of seven law enforcement units are currently searching for suspects believed to have robbed a Wendy’s hamburger outlet in the Casa de Oro area of Spring Valley.
The suspects were last seen running east down Campo Road, according to a Sheriff’s media spokesman, who declined to release descriptions of the suspects.

May 17, 2011 (Casa De Oro) -- A fast and effective attack allowed San Miguel firefighters to extinguish a fire that started in the kitchen of an upstairs apartment unit in the Casa De Oro area across the street from Spring Valley Middle School. Fire damage was confined to that single unit.
Crews were called to the Helix Square Apartments on the 3800 block of Conrad Drive at 11:21 a.m., Monday. The fire was considered knocked down ten minutes later. Inside the residence at the time of the fire was one adult male who evacuated the upstairs apartment, but was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation. He was later transported to Grossmont Hospital.
