ROBBERS HOLD UP BANK COURIER IN LEMON GROVE, BUT GET NO CASH

 

 Suspects drove a gray Honda, wore red baseball caps

 

May 8, 2010 (Lemon Grove) – Two men held up a bank courier for Wells Fargo Bank at 7080 Broadway in Lemon Grove on May 6th at 4:45 p.m. According to San Diego Police, the men acted as if they had a gun and grabbed four bank bags. The thieves may have been disappointed in their haul, however, since the bags contained only account and customer information–-no money.

LEMON GROVE TEEN ARRESTED FOR ASSAULTING OFFICER

 

April 30, 2010 (Lemon Grove) – A 15-year-old Lemon Grove resident was arrested this morning in connection with the assault and robbery of a 78-year-old woman on her way to church last Sunday morning in Lemon Grove. The youth was arrested on a probation violation and struggled with deputies during his arrest, injuring one deputy and ripping the badge off another, according to the Sheriff’’s office.

FEDERAL STIMULUS FUNDS BRING HEALTH CENTER AND JOBS TO LEMON GROVE

March 2, 2010 (Lemon Grove)--Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD) held a grand opening ribbon-cutting celebration last week for the Lemon Grove Family Health Center, which was funded by a $1.3 million federal stimulus grant.

LEMON GROVE WOMAN KILLED IN NEW YEAR’S ACCIDENT; DRIVER FACES CHARGES

January 1, 2010 (Lemon Grove) – Elaina Lynn Luquis Ortiz, 21, of Lemon Grove was killed shortly after 3 a.m. this morning after her car broke down with a flat tire on northbound I-805 south of Home Avenue. She and two others were seated in a black Mazda sedan parked in front of her Mitsubishi Spider, when a Chevy Tahoe SUV struck both vehicles.

November 30, 2009 (Lemon Grove) – If laughter is the best medicine, this may be the cure for those mid-winter blues.  Doug Williams, dubbed one of America’s most popular actors/comedians by Starz.com, will be performing at Sews and Shows in Lemon Grove on Saturday, December 12th.

 

Williams is host of “Martin Lawrence Presents 1st Amendment Stand Up.” Filmed in Washington D.C.’s historic Lincoln Theater, it features star comics and up-and-coming edgy talent performing before a live audience.’

Also named a BET's Comic View All Star, Williams will be starring in a 2010 Comedy Central Stand Up special. He has also appeared in The Mind of the Married Man, Ally McBeal, Comic View, It’s Showtime at

LEMON GROVE SUICIDE VICTIM IDENTIFIED; FELL FROM BRIDGE AS OFFICERS TRIED TO TALK HER DOWN

November 5, 2009 (Lemon Grove) - The coroner's office has identified Jessica Eve Louise Kuntz, 29, as the woman who fell to her death from a bridge in Lemon Grove on October 28th.  Kuntz was witnessed to climb over the safety fence of an overpass at Lemon Grove Avenue above Highway 94.   According to the County Coroner, Kuntz resident in both Santee and Lemon Grove.

THREE EAST COUNTY CITIES SIGN JOINT POWERS AGREEMENT FOR SHARED FIRE PROTECTION

October 15, 2009 ) -- In La Mesa today, city leaders, fire department chiefs and staff from El Cajon, La Mesa, and Lemon Grove, gathered for the official signing of a Joint Exercise of Powers Agreement (JPA). This agreement will create a shared management team to coordinate fire and emergency medical services, firefighter training, fire prevention, emergency planning, and community preparedness.

DUI/DRUNK DRIVING CHECKPOINT IN LEMON GROVE THIS WEEKEND

 

October 9, 2009 (Lemon Grove) --Sheriff William D. Gore today announced deputies from the Lemon Grove Station will be conducting a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint this weekend. The message for the beginning of this fall season is that drunk driving will not be tolerated.

October 8, 2009 (Lemon Grove) – Community leaders gathered at the Masjid Usman-Center for Religious Tolerance in Lemon Grove on Saturday to honor Dr. Abdussattar “Sattar” Shaikh, co-founder of the Islamic Center of San Diego. State and city leaders as well as representatives from the Sheriff’s Department and San Diego State University all praised Shaikh’s leadership in fostering multi-cultural understanding and religious tolerance.

“He has helped Muslims from all over the world form a thriving community, even in times of adversity,” said Lemon Grove Councilman George Gastil, who organized the event and issued a commendation on behalf of Lemon Grove. “We honor you, Dr. Shaikh, for the love and devotion you have shown to your adopted country. You have touched countless lives."

September 30, 2009 (Lemon Grove) – Dozens of people packed into the Por Favor Restaurant in Lemon Grove Friday night to celebrate the community’s newly formed Spring Valley-Lemon Grove Democratic Club. The new club hosted an impressive array of guest speakers, including two candidates for statewide offices: Attorney General and Insurance Comissioner. The group’s next meeting is slated for Thursday, October 1st. .

“Valley Grove is back,” Lemon Grove Councilman George Gastil proclaimed, referring to the area’s former Democratic Club, which disbanded several years ago. But victories by President Barack Obama and local Democratic candidates have revived a surge of interest in Democratic Clubs countywide, prompting Gastil to organize the new club.

LEMON GROVE CONCERTS IN THE PARK

July 1, 2009 (Lemon Grove)--The City of Lemon Grove will present free concerts on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.at Berry Street Park, starting July 9th. Bring your own picnic basket or have a barbecue while listening to the music--and don’t forget your blankets and lawn chairs for your listening pleasure.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase. No pets are allowed, for safety reasons.

SWEET SUCCESS: GROVE PASTRY SHOP

June 7, 2009 (Lemon Grove)—“What is special about this place is that we make the most challenging cakes—cakes that nobody else around town will take,” said Luis Francisco Montero, baker at the Grove Pastry Shop in Lemon Grove. Montero spoke with East County Magazine during an East County Chamber of Commerce reception earlier this week at the bakery, which celebrates its 54th year in business.
