ENCHANTED VILLAGE FESTIVAL OF TREES AND LIGHTS OPENS DEC. 14 IN SPRING VALLEY

Tickets cost $14.99 for adults and $9.99 for children  ages 3-12; three’s a limit of 500 tickets per night so advance purchase is advised.  You can reserve tickets online at www.EnchantedVillage.org. All proceeds from this delightful holiday display will benefit programs to help Noah Homes residents with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

November 17, 2018 (Santee) — The 2018 Santee Holiday Lighting Celebration was held on November 16th at Santee Trolley Square.  At 6:15 p.m., with thousands watching, the tree was lit with accompanying fireworks.

World War II paratrooper Tom Rice to serve as Grand Marshal

November 13, 2018 (El Cajon) – The Mother Goose Parade, El Cajon’s most cherished tradition for 72 years, will roll out on Sunday, November 18th starting at 1 p.m. in downtown EL Cajon.   

The theme this year is “The Sky’s The Limit!”  The parade’s Grand Marshal Tom Rice, a 96 year-old World War II Veteran and a former Army paratrooper.  He flew over the skies of Normandy on D-Day on June 6, 1944, as part of the Army’s 101st Airborne Division, called the “Screaming Eagles.” He's been awarded both a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart!

In addition to elaborate floats, marching bands, giant inflatable balloon characters, clowns and equestrian entries, there’s also a star-studded cast of child and adult celebrities in the line-up.

Topping the list are Brandon Tyler Russell, best known for his role as Dr. Gregory Williams (aka Baby George/Baby O’Malley) on Grey’s Anatomy, Colton Shires from the daytime soap “Passions,” and two-time Emmy Award winner Vincent DePaul best known for his role as Father Leon on The Bay, British feature film star Scott Butler. November 6, 2018 (Mt. Helix) -- Thanks to all who turned out in style at East County Magazine's Halloween Party at our editor's "haunting Hideaway haven" on Mt. Helix!

We had some great entries in the best costume contest,including Day of the Dead, Star Trek, witches, cats, Hugh Hefner, a race car driver, Donald Trump and Robert Mueller among other creative costumes.

El Cajon Councilman Steve Goble came as an endangered species -- a Chargers fan. 

We also enjoyed great music, rocking out to Monster Mash and more thanks to Tim Luranc and Paul Nichols.

Plus our guests vied for great prizes and savored a spook-tacular feast, too!

LA MESA WINE WORKS CELEBRATES FRUITFUL TWO YEARS AT ANNIVERSARY PARTY SATURDAY

October 11, 2018 (La Mesa) – With a motto of “when all else fails, wine works!” La Mesa Wine Works opened its doors two years ago as a cooperative urban winery tasting room serving up award-winning vintages from San Pasqual Winery and Wyatt Oaks.  Now the space has become a hub of activities ranging from live music on weekends to trivia nights, classes, fundraisers for charities and the ever-popular $5 wine night complete with wine slushies and frozen sangrias.

“Business has been good,” says Mike McWilliams of San Pasqual Winery.  On Saturday, October 13th from 12 noon to 10 p.m., Wine Works is celebrating its two-year anniversary with festivities that start with Cousins Maine Lobster truck from noon to 3 p.m. and Quick Stop Grill from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m.  Live music wil include the Sock Monkeys from 3 to5  pm. and the Phoenix Band from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.  Guests can also enjoy games and in the afternoon, $5 specials on all glasses of wine, wine slushiness and frozen sangrias. The party will go on rain or shine.

WILD ANIMAL PARK AND ZOO OFFER FREE KIDS’ ADMISSION IN OCTOBER

October 3, 2018 (San Diego) -- Throughout the month of October, kids ages 11 and younger receive free admission (with an adult) at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in San Pasqual as well as at the San Diego Zoo.

Special activities for kids are planned each weekend.so you’re encouraged to “go wild” and come over and over again.

Kids Free admission in October 2018 includes the Africa Tram at the Safari Park – no separate ticket needed. Kids can ride the Conservation Carousel for $6. Purchase Carousel tickets at the Safari Park.

October 1, 2018 (Lakeside) – Now in its 19th year, Oma’s Pumpkin Patch at the Van Ommering Dairy in Lakeside is open for the season now through October 31st .  You can visit Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

BLESSING OF THE LIONS TIGERS & BEARS CELEBRATED ON WORLD ANIMAL DAY OCT. 4

 

San Diego’s big cat and exotic animal sanctuary celebrates global animal welfare event with educational visits and blessing of animals

October 3, 2018 (Alpine) -- San Diego’s world renowned, non-profit big cat and exotic animal sanctuary, Lions Tigers & Bears is celebrating World Animal Day with a unique Blessing of the Animals and special promotion for visitors as part of an international effort to raise awareness and education about animal welfare. 

Father Jason Samuels of Christ the King Episcopal Church in Alpine will deliver a blessing to all the rescued animals at the sanctuary including lions, tigers, bears, bobcats, leopards, a mountain lion and more on Thursday, October 4 at 10:30 a.m.

PHOTOS OF THE MONTH: SANTA YSABEL MISSION’S BICENTENNIAL

September 29, 2018 (Santa Ysabel) – Bishop Robert McElroy of San Diego presided over a mass on September 16, 2018, commemorating the bicentennial celebration of the Santa Ysabel Asistencia. The ceremony was held at the outdoor site of the historical Santa Ysabel Indian Mission,  recently discovered through excavation work.

Parishioners gathered for the outdoor religious ceremony, with music provided by St. Stephen’s, Valley Center.

After the service, the Bishop gave an episcopcal blessing to the restored “Our Lady of Visitation” shrine, at “Ellykwanan” (the Native American name for the Santa Ysabel area) honoring Mary, mother of Christ.
