FARM BUREAU SPONSORS SAN DIEGO COUNTY FARM TOUR DAY JUNE 16

May 19, 2012 (Valley Center) – The San Diego County Farm Tour Day, sponsored by the Farm Bureau, on June 16 gives a close-up look at what fresh and local agriculture is all about from those who know it best: San Diego farmers. Eight local growers will open their farms to the public for San Diego County Farm Bureau’s third annual Farm Tour Day, with guided walking tours starting every half hour from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at each site.

May 19, 2012 (El Cajon) -- The CARE Club at El Cajon Valley High School, a student-directed fashion show, will host its fifth annual fashion show on Friday, May 25 at 7 p.m. in the El Cajon Valley High School gym.  This year, the theme will be “The Ends Justify the Jeans.”  The show will benefit the YWCA of San Diego and Laura’s House of Orange County, two organizations helping women.

May 15, 2012 (San Diego) -- The 10th annual Explore Mission Trails Day, a celebration highlighting everything Mission Trails Regional Park has to offer, will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2012. Most activities will be between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Visitor and Interpretive Center and the Equestrian Staging Area. The 2012 event, Connecting Children with Nature, will feature free guided nature walks, talks and programs throughout the park, including live animals, and special programs for children.

4TH ANNUAL FOOD AND WINE MIXER PRESENTED BY MANESS VINEYARDS JUNE 2

May 12, 2012 (Spring Valley) -- Maness Vineyard is holding the 4th Annual Food and Wine Mixer June 2 at historical Vineyard Mansion, 12685 Campo Road, Spring Valley from 12:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.  The event is to raise awareness for the local vineyards and wineries that are emerging across San Diego County.

The day will include entertainment such as local personality Diane Jean from The Brew Ha-Ha and Josh Tafoya on the baby grand.  A grape stomping contest will be held as well.  A charity raffle will benefit The House of Peru.

SAN DIEGO RIVER GUIDED MOTHER’S DAY HIKE MAY 13

May 11, 2012 (Lakeside) -- Lakeside’s River park Conservancy is presenting a free guided Mother’s Day hike on May 13 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.  River Park biologist, Monica Winters, will lead a five mile loop of the San Diego Riverbed in East County.

Winters will point out plants, birds and insects along the way.  All mothers will receive a beautiful native plant to take home.

Festivities include silent and live auctions, ranch animal encounters, , food, live entertainment and visits with the big cats.

JACUMBA’S FIRST “BLUES FEST” OFFERS FREE FAMILY FRIENDLY FUN MAY 12

 

May 1, 2012 (Jacumba)-- The Jacumba community will be “jammin and wailin” on Saturday May 12th as the Jacumba Arts Council presents their first “Spring Blues Fest” at the Highland Center on old Highway 80. “People have been very enthusiastic about the event,” says Celia Sigmon, President of Jacumba Arts Council. “There have been some wonderful changes happening in Jacumba so we wanted to celebrate with the community and fellow music lovers. We also feel that the arts, especially music, should be available to all. This is why we are putting on a free event that is suitable for families. Everyone is invited to attend and enjoy our scenic backcountry location!”
 
Lots of local and not so local artists will be there. There will be pulled- pork sandwiches, hot dogs, water and soft drinks available at the center. The Jacumba Women’s Club will have delicious baked goods available for sale. A raffle is planned with a Fender guitar and amp as the grand prize.
 
“We are particularly excited about the variety and talent of the musicians who will be appearing,” enthuses Joe Marshall, Event Coordinator and one of the featured performers. “BC Blues is a real get back together performance by seasoned music professionals. Its members are: Sam Cannon, Allan B3 Carrol on one of his Hammond Organs, Bob Horne, Bruce Craw, Danny Berg and Majid Rahmen from Imperial Valley.  Alex Gomez and the Gomez Blues Project will also appear. This is a fine blues group from San Diego with quite a following. Members are Alex Gomez on lead vocals and guitar, Gregg Miller on vocals and drums and others. Don Belter will also play. He is a blues artist from San Diego and formally a member of the Pine Valley Posse. Singer-songwriter Michael Seth Smith will be there from Boulevard. He has some great sounds!”
 
Joe’s group, One Way Out, will also play.  One Way Out is another great blues group that has been retired for some time but is getting back together for this event. Its members are JoeMama on the Harp, Wild Willie on Vocals, Mark the Shark on lead guitar, Rockin Raul on the Bass and Wonderful Ernie on the Drums.

SPOTLIGHT ON JULIAN AS 1ST ANNUAL WILD & SCENIC FILM FESTIVAL DEBUTS MAY 5-6

May 4, 2012 (Julian) – Through the beauty of films celebrating the environment, the Julian Wild & Scenic Film Festival promises to inspire activism and appreciation for the natural word. 

This weekend's May 5-6 festival in Julian, a historic gold rush mountain town, brings touring films from the famed Nevada City Wild and Scenic Film Festival. The fun debuts with a party tonight and another Saturday featuring lively tunes of Grand Canyon Sundown. Hikes on Volcan Mountain and in Santa Ysabel Preserve are also planned, as well as award-winning films, a non-fiction filmmakers workshop, and guest speakers.

Film highlights include Connecting the Gems, which tracks two National Geographic Adventures of the Year on a 520 mile trek through the Rockies’ premier wildlife corridors.  Chasing Water, winner of  Best Environmental Film and Best Documentary at other film fests, traces a Colorado watershed from river to the sea.

May 2, 2012 (San Diego) -- The Allied Gardens SpringFest is May 11-12 at the Allied Gardens Recreation Center, 5155 Greenbrier Ave., San Diego.  The kick-off party begins at 5:00 p.m. on May 11 with a concert featuring Fusion Beat at 7:45 p.m.  Saturday’s events begin at 9:00 a.m. with a Pancake Breakfast, followed by the SpringFest Parade.

Festivities include a car show, vendor booths, including food and a beer garden.  Saturday’s performances will be by Pullman Standard and Rockola. Children’s activities include a carnival, pony rides, inflatables, a rock climbing wall and a dunk tank.

April 25, 2012 (Alpine) – Vintage Alpine, a wine experience in the country, will be held on May 6 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Summers Past Farms, 15602 Olde Hwy 80, Flinn Springs.  The event began in 1990 and is now one of the larger events of its kind in the county. The event features numerous wineries, offering tastings of 40 plus wines from a variety of appellations. In addition, many fine San Diego restaurants will provide specialty foods for sampling.

Finalists announced; winner to receive bejeweled award
 
April 23, 2012 (La Mesa)--Approximately 400 students within the Grossmont Union High School District competed in the fourth annual Golden Artistry Jewelry Design Competition.   
 
This year’s entries were evaluated March 11 by three judges on both the quality of the design and the effectiveness in conveying “flight”, the theme of this year’s competition. Twelve finalists have been selected, but only one will receive the Grand Prize--the design presented to the winner as a piece of jewelry at the awards event on May 3rd at the La Mesa Community Center.  The Grand Prize will be created in precious metals and gems by Master Goldsmith Terry Whyte of Golden Artistry in downtown La Mesa.

EAST COUNTY ARTISTS FEATURED AT “ARTWALK” FESTIVAL APRIL 28 IN LITTLE ITALY

April 20, 2012 (San Diego) -- San Diego’s original fine art festival, Mission Federal ArtWalk is back for its 28th year. Featuring artists who live in the East County area as well as San Diego, the event will be held on Saturday and Sunday , April 28 and 29, when 17 blocks of Little Italy will be transformed for this free festival. ArtWalk offers a unique opportunity for members of the public to engage directly with over 350 artists who will be there to display their original works for exhibit and sale. The art on display will include a wide range of paintings, sculpture, mosaics, glasswork and photography.
