September 9, 2009 (San Diego)--Assembly Member Lori Saldaña (D-San Diego) urged the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to collaborate with San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) and other stakeholders in developing a long-term distributed generation strategy to reduce the risk of wildfire and provide safe power generation in case of emergencies.

BRUSH FIRE HALTED IN FALLBROOK

 

September 7, 2009 (Fallbrook) A brush fire in Fallbrook burning in heavy brush has been extinguished at less than an acre, Cal Fire spokesman Darrell Pena has informed East County Magazine at 4:50 p.m. today. The fire, initially reported shortly before 4 p.m., put up heavy smoke and was visible throughout the Fallbrook area, said Pena.

FIRE AT CUYAMACA PEAK

 

September 5, 2009 (San Diego’s East County) – A 5 to 10 acre brush fire is burning at the base of Cuyamaca Peak.. The blaze was reported at 1:20 p.m. near the Boulder Creek community in the vicinity of Creek Road and Tule Springs Truck Trail.

40-ACRE FIRE AT HIGHWAY 94 & BORDER CHECKPOINT

September 4, 2009 – A fire on the south side of Highway 94 and the Border Patrol checkpoint at Sycamore Canyon has been contained at 40 acres, CAL-FIRE spokesperson Roxanne Provaznik reports. Full control of the Checkpoint Fire is projected for 5 p.m. today.

5-ACRE FIRE DOUSED IN RAMONA

August 30, 2009 (Ramona) - A five-acre brush fire off Steffy Road near Wilson Road in the Ramona area has been contained shortly after it began, CAL-FIRE reports.   CAL-FIRE dispatched 12 engines, 2 fire crews, 1 bulldozer, 2 airtankers, 2 helicopter, 2 water tenders, and 2 chief officers for a total of approximately 100 fire fighters.

CAL FIRE DOUSES FIRE AT OLD HIGHWAY 80 IN EAST COUNTY

 

 

August 17, 2009 (San Diego's East County) -- At 2:41 pm firefighters from CAL FIRE responded to a vegetation fire located at Old Highway 80 and Live Oak Springs. In an attempt to rapidly extinguish these flames, firefighters utilized a joint effort with allied agencies to battle the blaze.

FOUR FIRES ALONG I-8 NEAR TAVERN ROAD, ALPINE

 

August 12, 2009 (Alpine) – Four small fires are burining along Eastbound Interstate 8 between Old Highway 80 and Tavern Road, near the community of Alpine (TB Map 1233) between the Dunbar and Tavern Road exits.

 

“The spread of all four fires has been stopped,” CAL FIRE spokesperson Roxanne Provaznik reported at 4:45 p.m. “Two of the fires have been contained.” The largest of the fires is currently under an acre.

However it poses no threat to Americans on this side of the border since the wind is blowing in the opposite direction, CAL-FIRE Battalion Chief Nick Schuler assures us.

July 27, 2009 (San Diego)--The San Diego City council voted 6-2 today to pass a resolution in support of SDG&E’s Emergency Power Shut-Off Plan. While supporters argued that the plan is needed to prevent power line-caused fires, opponents contended that blacking out power during fire-prone conditions could actually endanger lives.

SANTEE BRUSH FIRE EXTINGUISHED

July 12, 2009 (Santee) – A small brush fire that started around 4 p.m. this afternoon at 9255 Magnolia, near the Las Colinas Women’s facility in Santee, has been extinguished. The blaze burned less than three acres. No structures were damaged. Sheriff’s deputies alerted mobile home park residents in the vicinity of the fire, but no evacuations were ordered.

One mobile home park resident was transported to a hospital during the fire, however a dispatcher said she could not confirm whether the individual was injured from the fire or had an unrelated medical issue.

MOTORCYCLE IGNITES FIRE IN OTAY MESA

 

July 8, 2009 (Otay)—A motorcycle accident has sparked a vegetation fire on Otay Lakes Road that is currently eight acres, CAL-FIRE informed East County Magazine at 5:43 p.m.

 

“Firefighters do not anticipate the fire getting any larger,” CAL-FIRE Captain Nick Schuler said, adding that no additional resources will be required to extinguish the blaze.

FIRE SPARKED BY WEEDING TOOL DOUSED IN EL CAJON; KEEP FIRE EXTINGUISHER HANDY WHEN CLEARING BRUSH, OFFICIALS CAUTION

 

 

July 4, 2009 (El Caj on)--At 11:05 a.m. this morning, El Cajon Fire crews were dispatched to a report of a brush fire near 1103 Gorsline Dr. in El Cajon. When firefighters arrived on scene, they encountered a 3/4-acre brush fire burning uphill threatening residential structures. Approximately ten firefighters on three engines and a Battalion Chief were able to contain the blaze in approximately 30 minutes, but remained on scene for over an hour and a half putting out hot spots.

THREE-ACRE FIRE DOUSED IN PAUMA VALLEY

 

June 30, 2009 (Pauma Valley) – Cal Fire has extinguished a three-acre vegetation fire in the 32000 block of Pauma View Drive, Pauma Valley.   The fire was started by a tractor and burned portions of a grove, but did not threaten or damage any structures, Cal Fire Captain Nick Schuler reports.

SD SUPERVISORS ON TUESDAY WILL CONSIDER SDG&E’S PLAN TO SHUT OFF POWER ON HOT, WINDY DAYS

The County of San Diego Board of Supervisors will take up San Diego Gas & Electric Company's ill-conceived electricity shut off plan at next Tuesday's board meeting, June 23rd, which starts at 9 a.m. at the County Administration Building, 1600 Pacific Highway, Third Floor, San Diego. The discussion will center on both the issue of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) sought by SDG&E with San Diego County and the need for the County to formally oppose the shut off plan and communicate their opposition to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).

CAL FIRE RESPONDS TO SEVERAL SMALL FIRES, ALL DOUSED QUICKLY

June 3, 2009 (San Diego’s East County)4 p.m. – Lightning started several small fires this afternoon in San Diego's eastern region, including multiple blazes in the Deer Springs area, all extinguished at less than an acre apiece. “A couple of them actually hit power lines,” said Captain Nick Schuler of CAL-FIRE. Another lightning-sparked fire also burned approximately one acre in the 2000 block of Willow Glen Road in Fallbrook. In addition, the cause of a small fire in Ramona this afternoon remains under investigation.
