February 3, 2015 (San Diego's East County) - It’s rare for members of  Congress to agree on anything these days. .Both both the House and Senate voted unanimously to approve the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act.  The measure now heads to President Obama’s desk for signature.

VALENTINES WEEKEND KUMEYAAY LAKES POETRY CAMPOUT AT MISSION TRAILS FEB. 13-15

 

 

February 3, 2015 (San Diego)--San Diego's Mission Trails Regional Park announces a three-day Kumeyaay Lakes Poetry Campout  in February with Poet Jim Moreno--complete with love-themed workshops for romantics at heart.

The Valentines Day Weekend (Feb. 13-15) will blend writing time for beginning to seasoned poets in four structured writing workshops. Star gazing with the San Diego Astronomy Association, a guided nature walk, and a Saturday sunset open mic for camping poets and community at the Kumeyaay Lake amphitheater will be blended with Valentine theme poetry events.

DRONE ZONES: CLOSE CALLS SPUR INNOVATION

February 2, 2015 (San Diego’s East County)--The Federal Aviation Administration is reporting approximately 200 close calls in the past year between aircraft and drones.  That includes two  cases  of drones flying too close to airport runways in San Diego County – one in East County near Gillespie Field in El Cajon and a second in Carlsbad.

LA MESA MAN ARRESTED FOR THREATS TO ISLAMIC GROUP

February 2, 2015 (La Mesa) – San Diego Police have arrested John David Weissinger, 53, of La Mesa for making a criminal threat against the Council on American-Islamic Relations.  He is also charged with illegally owning, buying or selling an illegal large-capacity ammunition magazine.

VALENTINE’S DAY DINNER DANCE IN CAMPO FEB. 14

ELDERLY MAN BURNS HOME, KILLS SELF

 

February 2, 2015  (El Cajon) – A tenant at a mobile home park in El Cajon made a grisly discovery at 3.a.m. yesterday, finding the body of an 80-year-old man in a vehicle. According to El Cajon Police Lieutenant Walt Miller, the man had a gunshot wound to his chest and a gun was found beside him, City News Service reports.

January 31, 2015 (Santee) – A young girl was injured after a fire broke out in a unit downstairs from the apartment she was in with her grandmother  Friday afternoon on Mission Gorge Road in Santee. A firefighter battling the blaze also sustained injury, 10 News reports.

JUNIOR SEAU ELECTED TO PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME

 

February 1, 2015 (San Diego)--Former San Diego Chargers linebacker Junior Seau was elected for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday in his first year of eligibility. Seau died in 2012.

Seau headlines the 2015 Hall of Fame class, joining running back Jerome Bettis, wide receiver Tim Brown, defensive end Charles Haley, guard Will Shields, center Mick Tinglehoff and former NFL executives Ron Wolf and Bill Polian. The class of ’15 will be officially inducted this summer at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

HOUSE PASSES 10 BILLS TO COMBAT HUMAN TRAFFICKING

January 29, 2015 (San Diego) – It’s rare for both parties in Congress to agree on anything these days.  But the House of Representatives has just approved 10 bills to help combat human trafficking.  All five of San Diego’s Congressional representatives voted in favor of two of the bills and the rest passed by voice vote without a roll call of members.

January 30, 2015 (San Francisco) – Investigators from the California Attorney General’s office reportedly raided the home of former Public Utilities Commission Chairman Michael Peevey this week, seizing computers and smart phones.  State law enforcement officials also seized evidence from the home of Pacific Gas & Electric Company executive Brian Cherry, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

January 30th 2014 (El Cajon)—The San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on January 22nd to welcome Milholland Solar and Electric to East County and celebrate the premier solar installation and electrical contractor’s 25th anniversary.  

Representatives for officials including Supervisor Dianne Jacob, State Senator Joel Anderson and Assemblyman Brian Jones were on hand to present awards, along with Chamber leaders, at Milholland’s spacious new headquarters at 1475 North Cuyamaca Street in El Cajon.
