COMMUNITY LEADERS HOST EAST COUNTY TOWN HALL SEPT. 26 ON LACK OF DIVERSITY AMONG DECISION-MAKERS

 

Residents and experts to discuss changes needed to create local government by the people, for the people

September 13, 2018 (Lemon Grove) -- Dozens of East County residents will gather for a free town hall discussion on the barriers that exclude working people from joining the agencies that make decisions impacting their lives.  The event will be held Sept. 26 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Lemon Grove Community Center, 3146 School Lane in Lemon Grove. It was prompted by the Community Representation Report  from the Center on Policy Initiatives, which revealed East County as the largest geographic region in San Diego with a stark lack of diversity between decision-makers on boards and commissions and community residents.

Now, the Obama administration's last days have been marked by grand gestures - including a call for public lands agencies to be more inclusive in hiring practices and community outreach.

EAST COUNTY RESIDENTS HONORED FEB. 5TH AS LOCAL HEROES

 

February 12, 2013 (San Diego)--On Feb. 5, 2013, Union Bank, in partnership with KPBS, honored 16 local heroes who are making a positive difference in the lives of others. The heroes were selected each month in 2012 and were formally recognized last week at the cultural diversity celebration held at the San Diego Natural History Museum. 

Louis Frick and Leroy Elliot of East County were recognized for Disability Awareness Month (Frick), and Native American Heritage Month (Elliot).

CONGRESSWOMAN SUSAN DAVIS INTRODUCES BILL TO INCREASE DIVERSITY AMONG TEACHERS

 

February 9, 2013 (Washington D.C. -- Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-CA), joined by her colleagues Reps. Ruben Hinojosa (D-TX), Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), and Kathy Castor (D-FL), has introduced legislation to increase diversity among America’s teaching ranks.  The Diverse Teachers Recruitment Act would help establish programs to recruit new male teachers and teachers from minority groups into the profession.

MAYOR FILNER ANNOUNCES STAFF APPOINTMENTS REFLECTING DIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO

January 9, 2013 (San Diego)--Mayor Bob Filner has announced his staffing team at City Hall. The appointments reflect San Diego’s diversity: over 50% are women, 38% Latino, 21% African-American, 4% Asian Pacific Islander as well as staff from the lesbian, gay, bisexual/transgender community.

“When I campaigned for Mayor, I pledged that everyone would have a seat at the table, and that includes in my administration. I am proud to lead this team of talented and dedicated women and men. Together we will work hard for the citizens of San Diego,” said Mayor Bob Filner, who also released salaries of his staffers as part of his pledge toward transparency.

SDSU GRADUATION RATES, AS WELL AS DIVERSITY AT ALL-TIME HIGHS

Students set new records of success on all fronts

October 22, 2012 (San Diego) – San Diego State University students have set new records in graduation and continuation rates. And new campus census numbers released last week show that SDSU continues to be a national leader in eliminating the “achievement gap” between students of color and their counterparts.

The six-year graduation rate, which is the national benchmark for graduation rates, is at an all-time high of 66.5 percent at SDSU, up from 65.7 percent last year. For students of color, that number is at a record 63.5 percent, an increase from 61.3 percent in 2011.

SDG&E, SOCALGAS AIM TO RAISE THE BAR WITH NEW DIVERSITY GOALS

 

 Sept. 29, 2011 (San Diego) --  San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) and Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) have entered into an agreement with The Greenlining Institute outlining workforce- and supplier-diversity goals for the next four years.
