LA MESA POLICE SEEK SUSPECTS WHO ROBBED, INJURED VICTIM IN VONS PARKING LOT

 

 

August 31, 2013 (La Mesa) – Last night at 11:26 p.m., La Mesa Police were called to the parking lot of the Von’s grocery store, 8011 University Avenue, to investigate an assault.  During the investigation, Officers discovered that the victim had actually been robbed of his property by two unknown assailants.

The victim reported to police that he was walking to his vehicle when he was attacked from behind by two men.  The victim was struck in the face and knocked to the ground. During the attack, the suspects stole the victim’s cell phone and wallet.  The suspects were last seen running eastbound from the scene through an alley behind a neighboring store, possibly towards Orange Avenue.

PEOPLE OF THE EARTH LIVE AT SAN PASQUAL WINERY AUG. 31

 

August 29, 2013 (La Mesa) – People of the Earth, a guitar/keyboard duo, will perform live on Saturday, August 31 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the San Pasqual Winery tasting room at 9364 La Mesa Blvd.  (map)

The duo will play popular favorites from the 80's through today, in addition to entertaining original music. There is no cover charge; guests may purchase wine by the glass; cheese,  crackers and dessert are available for sale.

LAUGHING MATTERS: PROMINENT COMICS AT COMEDY DEBUT IN LA MESA AUGUST 29

August 28, 2013 (La Mesa) – “For my first show, I want to start off with a bang!” Eric Knowles told ECM.  Knowles is launching a comedy show at the Regal Bar in La Mesa the last Thursday in each month at 8:30 p.m., starting August 29.

The opening program will feature nationally renown actor/comedian Tommy Chunn as well as is Brian Simpson, a regular at Mad House Comedy Club who helps produce the famed Comedy Juice shows.

COMMUNITY BICYLE RODEO IN LA MESA AUGUST 31

 
 
August 28, 2013 (La Mesa) – The La Mesa Human Relations Commission and La Mesa Walk-n-Roll Safe Routes Program is sponsoring a bicycle skills event designed to teach children the skills they need in order to be better cyclists. By learning bike handling and traffic skills, one can enjoy bicycling more and reduce the chance of injury.

MAN STABBED DURING ROBBERY ATTEMPT IN LA MESA

 

August 26, 2013 (La Mesa) – Late Saturday night, La Mesa Police were called to the emergency room at Alvarado Hospital to investigate a stabbing. The victim suffered two stab wounds to his thigh that are not considered life threatening.

The victim reported to police that the stabbing occurred around 8:50 p.m. in the 7500 block of El Cajon Boulevard in La Mesa The victim said he was waiting for a friend to give him a ride when he was approached by two males and a fight ensued over his property. The victim fought back and did not lose his property in the robbery attempt.

FOAMING PROJECT AIMS TO MINIMIZE ROOT INTRUSION IN LA MESA SEWER SYSTEM

 

 

August 26, 2013 (La Mesa) – The City of La Mesa began a process that minimizes root intrusion in its underground sewer system.  Roots can enter the sewer through joints in older sewer pipes.  Performing the sewer root foaming work is contractor Pacific Sewer Maintenance Corporation.

Work began on August 22, 2013, and it will last between 30 to 45 days.  There should be no disruptions to individual or business sewer services.

PEDESTRIANS ROBBED AT GUNPOINT IN LA MESA

 

August 17, 2013 (La Mesa) – Two pedestrians were robbed of their purses in the 8100 block of La Mesa Boulevard on August 14 at 10:05 p.m.  Two suspects approached the victims from behind, and one of the suspects displayed a black handgun. The other suspect was armed with a crowbar.

One of the suspects demanded the victims’ purses. After the victims complied, the suspects fled eastbound La Mesa Boulevard on foot. The victims ran to a nearby residence and called La Mesa Police.

BRUSH FIRE DOUSED AFTER THREATENING HOMES IN LA MESA

July 28, 2013 (La Mesa)--A brush fire came dangerously close to homes in La Mesa today, forcing shut-down of lanes on State Route 125.

The blaze started when a vehicle fire spread into the brush along the shoulder of southbound 125 near Lemon Avenue.  Heartland Fire crews found a hillside had caught fire and was swiftly spreading toward homes, fueled by windy conditions.

MAN SLASHED IN FACE WITH KNIFE IN LA MESA

 

July 15, 2013 (La Mesa)—La Mesa Police responded to a 9-1-1 call on July 12 at 7:40 p.m. in the 7400 block of Colony Drive. A witness reported that a suspect slashed the face of a victim with a knife and then fled west through the residential complex.

Officers arrived on scene and located the victim on the ground with a laceration to his nose and face. The 50-year-old victim was transported to the hospital with wounds that were not life threatening.

Officers searched the area with assistance from San Diego Sheriff’s helicopter ASTREA and El Cajon Police Department canine units, but were unable to locate the suspect. The suspect is described as a white man in his 40s or 50s, between 5’4 and 5’6 tall, approximately 160 pounds, with “salt and pepper” hair. He was wearing a t-shirt and brown shorts and carried a large black trash bag when he fled the scene.

CITY OF LA MESA FREE SUMMER MOVIE JULY 26

July 13, 2013 (La Mesa)—The  City of La Mesa presents “Movie Night Under the Stars” on July 26, at La Mesita Park. The movie, “Wreck it Ralph” (rated PG), starts at 8:00 p.m. with pre-show entertainment starting at 7:30 p.m. This is fun family entertainment at its best “Under the Stars.”

The movie is FREE to the public and will be shown on a 25’ x 14’ screen. Bring your lawn chair, spread out a blanket, sit back and enjoy.  La Mesita Park is located adjacent to the Junior Seau Sports Complex at 8855 Dallas Street, La Mesa.

HUNDREDS CHEER OPENING OF WINERY IN LA MESA AS WINEMAKER REAPS REWARDS

June 26, 2013 (La Mesa) – “Isn’t this amazing?” Linda McWilliams, winemaker at San Pasqual Winery, exclaimed, standing inside the company’s new winery in a former industrial building in La Mesa. Hundreds of guests packed into the 4,500 square foot space for the winery’s grand opening celebration last weekend, savoring the fruits of McWilliams’ labors.

Those labors are yielding some impressive results.  At this year’s  San Diego County Fair, San Pasqual Winery picked up six awards, including a gold medal for the winery’s most popular offering, Habañera passionfruit wine.

MILLION DOLAR LOTTERY TICKET SOLD IN LA MESA

 

 

June 23, 2013 (La Mesa) – If you bought a Powerball Lottery ticket at Excalibur Liquor on Baltimore Drive in La Mesa, you could be a millionaire.  A ticket sold at the store matched five of six numbers chosen, state Lottery officials reported  Thursday.  The winning ticket is worth $943,604.   

Winners have 180 days to claim the prize.

82-YEAR-OLD MAN ARRESTED FOR SHOOTING WIFE

 

June 21, 2013 (La Mesa)—La Mesa Police responded to a 911 call last night at 11:17 p.m. from a woman who had been shot in the hand and abdomen by her husband, Clyyde Hayen. On arrival at the residence in the 7300 block of Princeton Avenue, Police found that the suspect was still inside the residence and the victim was unable to leave.

After a few minutes, the 73-year old victim was able to leave the residence.  The victim reported that she had just served her husband with divorce papers prior to the shooting.

FIRST WINERY IN LA MESA HOLDS GRAND OPENING JUNE 22-23

June 16, 2013 (La Mesa) – The public is invited to sample award-winning wines, savor food and live music at the grand opening of the San Pasqual Winery at 8140 Center Street in La Mesa.   The festivities will take place Saturday and Sunday, June 22 and 23 from 12-5 p.m.   Cost is $20 in advance or $25 at the door.

The decision to move its wine-making business from Pacific Beach to La Mesa was motivated by a need for more space and a desire to be close to San Pasqual Winery’s existing tasting room in downtown La Mesa.   The new facility will be triple the size of their existing winery, supplementing the existing tasting room with a second La Mesa location.

SPIDERMAN MASKED ROBBERY SUSPECT ARRESTED

 

June 13, 2013 (La Mesa) – On June 7, 2013 La Mesa Police Detective Dale Perry indentified the robbery suspect from the Sierra Market (3800 Massachusetts Avenue) robbery that occurred on January 28, 2013. In the Sierra Market robbery, the clerk got into an altercation with the suspect and was injured.

On June 7, 2013 at approximately 10:00 am, La Mesa Police detectives arrested 43 year-old Johnny McGee of San Diego and 38 year-old Gina E. Ludwig of San Diego for the robbery.

SUMMER HEALTHCARE SATURDAY JUNE 15

 

 

June 12, 2013 (La Mesa)- On Saturday, June 15,  the San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce and the Grossmont Healthcare District will again team up to produce Summer Healthcare Saturday, a one day health exposition that will be held at Grossmont Center in La Mesa.

The event will feature free demonstrations, free health information and screenings. Up to 75 booths are expected to be present and lining up throughout the mall.

LA MESA MAN ARRESTED FOR STRIKING SHERIFF HELICOPTER WITH LASER

June 11, 2013 (La Mesa) – At 12:30 a.m. on June 8,  the crew of the Sheriff’s ASTREA 3 helicopter was repeatedly struck by a green laser. ASTREA 3, piloted by Deputy Dollard with Tactical Flight Officer Deputy Brown, was flying in the La Mesa area when Deputy Brown noticed a green laser was striking him. Deputy Dollard positioned the aircraft so that Deputy Brown could locate the suspect using the Forward Looking Infra-Red (FLIR) camera. While orbiting an apartment complex in the 5300 block of Baltimore Avenue, La Mesa, the suspect stood on his balcony and illuminated ASTREA 3 with the laser.

SCHOOL BURGLARS LEARN A LESSON IN LA MESA

 

June 10, 2013 (La Mesa) – Crime didn’t pay for a pair of burglars caught fleeing the scene of a break-in at Vista La Mesa Academy.  On June 6 at 2:28 a.m., La Mesa Police responded to an alarm activation at the elementary school, located at 3900 Violet Street.  As officers arrived, they heard glass breaking inside.  More officers, including a canine team, responded.

Two suspects were seen carrying computer equipment out of the school and fleeing south through the playground area. Both were taken into custody as they jumped a fence at the south end of the school grounds. The property taken was recovered.

TRASH TRUCK OVERTURNS IN L A MESA

June 3, 2013 (La Mesa) – A SIG alert has been issued in La Mesa, where an EDCO trash truck overturned, spilling a dumpster onto the ramp from Severin Drive to Interstate 8 west.  

In addition, 100 gallons of diesel fuel have been spilled, the California Highway Patrol website reports, and a HAZMAT team has been called to the scene.

LA MESA CITY COUNCIL APPROVES INCREASED SEWER SERVICE RATES

May 30, 2013 (La Mesa)- La Mesa’s City Council unanimously approved increasing sewer service rates at its May 14 meeting. For the average family, the rate will rise by 7% in each of the next two years. Ironically, citizens' successful effort at conserving water has reduced city revenues--and was among the factors cited by Council to justify the rate hike, which drew strong objections from some residents present.

MAN IN SPIDERMAN MASK ROBS GAS STATION AT GUNPOINT, KICKS CUSTOMER

 

May 24, 2013 (La Mesa) –La Mesa Police responded to a robbery report at 1:24 a.m. at the USA gas station in the 7900 block of University.  A suspect wearing a Spiderman mask pulled a black, semi-automatic pistol out and told a customer to lie on the floor, then began kicking the customer, according to police.

The suspect demanded money from the clerk.  The masked man was last seen running northbound on La Mesa Boulevard. The loss was approximately $300 and the clerk was not injured. The male customer left on a bicycle after the robbery and before police arrived; he has not been located.

STRONG-ARM ROBBERY AT LA MESA MOTEL

 

May 22, 2013 (La Mesa) – La Mesa Police were called to the Motel 6 at 7621 Alvarado Road regarding a robbery that had just occurred on May 20 at 2:27 a.m.  Officers found a victim suffering minor injuries from being struck in the head by two unknown suspects.  The victim reported he was robbed of his wallet and car keys by the two assailants.

The victim stated he was visiting a friend and walked out to his vehicle in the parking lot to leave.  The victim reported he was approached from behind, struck over the head, and then knocked to the ground while he was trying to get into his vehicle. The suspects, who were described as African American males, both wearing dark hooded sweatshirts, took the victim’s property and ran towards a waiting vehicle parked on Alvarado Road.  The suspects then fled the scene in that vehicle and were last seen driving east from the motel property.

Herrick Community Health Care Library, 9001 Wakarusa St. in La Mesa, will host a free senior discussion group presentation on “Alternatives to Google: Finding Health Information Online,” from 10 to 11 a.m. today. The public is invited to attend, and RSVP is not required. The speaker will be Kathy Quinn, library director of the Herrick Library.

Quinn, with 21 years of experience as a librarian and researcher, will share tips on how to find reliable, accurate and trustworthy information on the Internet about your health. The presentation will include a demonstration of the links to health information available on the Herrick Library website. Handouts on how to evaluate health websites and reliable sites to search will be provided.

BROTHER STABBED WHILE PROTECTING HIS SISTER IN LA MESA, REMAINS IN CRITICAL CONDITION WITH CHEST WOUND

 

May 20, 2013 (La Mesa) – A man who reportedly choked his girlfriend until she lost consciousness and threw her against a closet is under arrest for stabbing his girlfriend’s brother.  

La Mesa Police received a report of the stabbing at 1:43 a.m. in the 7100 block of Waite Drive.  When officers arrived, they found the brother, 21, lying near a sidewalk and rendered treatment. A perimeter was set up and the suspect, Mark Hernandez Cervantes, 28, of San Diego surrendered shortly after.

During the investigation, officers learned of the altercation between the suspect and his girlfriend prior to the stabbing.  When she regained consciousness, the victim called her mother, who came to the apartment with the young woman’s brother.  The female victim did not require medical attention.
