September 20, 2014 (San Diego’s East County)—During the August heat, we covered some of the hottest topics in town including  a fire chief’s meeting with county officials, whistleblowers speaking out on the Grossmont Union High School District’s Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee,  an interview with Mark Arabo on the Iraq humanitarian crisis, a Kurdish-American woman on how ISIS attacks are impacting her own family,  and coverage of a Border Children forum at a La Mesa church.

On the lighter side, we chatted with the maker of the mbira—a unique musical instrument invented locally, and with a firefighter/historian who recalls the infamous El Cajon jail break, owners of a Ramona winery, and the founder of St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center on amazing successes  help developmentally disabled children, plus much, much more.

July 6, 2014 (San Diego's East County)--Blackwater, the private military contractor that has sparked considerably controversy through the years, is back in the headlines.Many East County residents recall the successful battle waged by residents in rural Potrero to prevent Blackwater from building a paramilitary training camp in San Diego's backcountry. 

Potrero residents held a recall election and removed all five planning group members who voted for the Blackwater facility and staged a march through adjacent federal forest lands that would be threatened by the project, drawing international attention before Blackwater ultimately withdrew its plans.

Now, the New York Times reports that around that same time back in 2007, Blackwater blocked a State Department inquiry into allegations of violence against civilians in Iraq by the company’s personnel.  The investigation was halted after Blackwater’s top manager in Iraq threatened that he “could kill” the government’s chief investigator—and that “no one could or would do anything about it” according to State Department reports, the New York Times article states.

February 21, 2014 (San Diego's East County) - The 2014 Activist People's Ball will be held on Saturday, March 15 at 7:00PM at the World Beat Center in Balboa Park. The extravaganza is a benefit for Activist San Diego and its newly-launched radio station KNSJ (Networking for Social Justice).

January 28, 2014 (San Diego)--Legendary folk singer, activist,  environmentalist, leftist, songwriter, and troubadour extraordinaire Pete Seeger passed away on Monday, 27 January, 2014.

This very weekend, KNSJ held a tribute concert to  Pete Seeger thanks to our invitation of George Mann, who joined us in this musical retrospective celebration of his life. We may have been the last sing-along event of Pete's songs, while he was still alive. As part of the audience, we were uplifted by his spirit and words: "If I had a hammer, I'd singing in the morning, I'd sing it in the evening, all over this land... It's a song of justice, it's a song of freedom, it's a song of love between my brother and my sister all over this land, all over this land..."

Tuesday morning, Amy Goodman and Democracy Now spent the bulk of the broadcast celebrating the life and contributions of Pete Seeger and his cultural activism. Listeners were reminded just how important the programming of our new community radio station is to our values and our information, knowing that KNSJ is the only local station to be honoring Pete Seeger today. Faulconer, Alvarez surprisingly similar on issues; Aguirre drops bombs

November 13, 2013 (San Diego)--Three of the four so-called “major” candidates for mayor of San Diego in the November 19 special election — Republican Kevin Faulconer and Democrats David Alvarez and Mike Aguirre — debated November 11 at California Western School of Law in an event co-sponsored by the school and KNSJ 89.1 FM Descanso, San Diego County’s new community radio station. The fourth “major” candidate, Republican-turned-independent-turned-Democrat Nathan Fletcher, did not appear.

Surprisingly, given how most of the local media outlets have scripted their coverage of the race — Faulconer the center-Right Republican, Alvarez the progressive Democrat and Fletcher the man in the middle — Faulconer and Alvarez, colleagues on the current San Diego City Council, agreed on as many issues as they disagreed. It was Aguirre, running a distant fourth in most polls, who challenged the other two candidates and confronted many issues that both Faulconer and Alvarez did their best to duck.

June 1, 2013 (San Diego) –Access to information from truthful, unbiased media are cornerstones to democracy.  As KNSJ prepares to launch its public, nonprofit radio station transmitting from Descanso in East County, you’re invited to a forum on media justice hosted by Activist San Diego.

East County Magazine editor Miriam Raftery will be among the panelists at the forum on Monday, June 17 at 7 p.m.  at the Joyce Beers Community Center on Vermont Street (one block north of University Avenue across from Trader Joe's). 

Joseph Pulitzer  observed  back in 1883 that the media “should always fight for progress and reform, never tolerate injustice or corruption, always fight demagogues of all parties, never belong to any party, always oppose privilege classes and public plunderers, never lack sympathy with the poor, always remain devoted to the public welfare, never be satisfied with merely printing news, always be drastically independent, never be afraid to attack wrong, whether by predatory plutocracy or predatory poverty.”

But today, the major broadcast media and many print publications are owned by the very same corporations over which media should serve as watchdogs--and they have are far from impartial . Six corporations control the vast majority of our airways and more.  Consider this:
