October 20, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – Residents in the Dehesa area of unincorporated El Cajon will be losing a firefighting structure engine and a wildland fire engine due starting November 1.

 

In addition, a three-man engine will be replaced by a two-man paramedic crew—a situation that the San Miguel Firefighters Association (SMFA) contends on its website is “unsafe” but that the District contends is necessary due to dwindling property tax revenues that fund firefighting services.

ALPINE EDUCATION FOUNDATION HOSTS FALL FESTIVAL OCT. 23 AT SUMMERS PAST FARMS

 

October 20, 2011 (Flinn Springs) – Free family fun will blossom this Sunday at Summers Past Farms, where a Fall Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to benefit Alpine schools. A pumpkin patch, maze, draft horse-drawn hay ride, craft and gift booths, 4-H animal exhibits, treats and more are all part of the festivities.

 

LAKESIDE DEATH RULED A HOMICIDE


October 20, 2011 (Lakeside) – The body of a male found dead October 18 inside a home in the 11400 block of Rocky Lane, Lakeside has been ruled a homicide.

“It was violent,” Lt. Larry Nesbit with the San Diego Sheriff’s office confirmed. Identity has not yet been released pending identification by the Medical Examiner and notification of family.

October 19, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – Crimemapping.com, which initially covered only unincorporated areas of San Diego under jurisdiction of the Sheriff, has now been expanded to include all cities and communities within San Diego County. The site allows users to click on a map or type in a community name to find detailed information on the number and types of crimes—such as arson, assaults, homicides, vehicle crimes, or property crimes. October 17, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – Inspired by the Occupy Wall Street movement and similar demonstrations against financial institutions and corporate power in Spain and Germany, a “Global Day of Protest” on Saturday, October 15 brought millions of people into the streets in protests held in 950 cities worldwide.  The  largest occurred in Madrid, where an estimated half million Spaniards joined together to sing Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” and raise hands to show that theirs was a peaceful protest. The movement is attracting some strange bedfellows—drawing support this week from labor leaders, Solidarity's Lech Walesa, and even a co-founder of the conservative Tea Party movement.

October 17, 2011 (El Cajon) – For the second time in less than a month, a car lost control on an East County freeway and crashed into an East County car dealership. Around 2:15 p.m. yesterday, a Honda Civic ran off I-8, severely damaging a pickup truck at Carl Burger Dodge in La Mesa.

 

DOWNTOWN AREA TROLLEY STATIONS AND STREETS TO CLOSE FOR TWO WEEKENDS: OCTOBER 21-23 AND OCTOBER 28-30


Additional Long-Term Closures also Announced
 

 
October 17,2011 (San Diego) -- Trolley construction will necessitate the closures of downtown area Trolley stations and streets for the weekends of Oct. 21-23 and Oct. 28-30. The work is all part of the $620 million Trolley Renewal project to rebuild the Orange and Blue Trolley lines. The closures will begin at 9 p.m. on Fridays and end late Sunday nights or early Monday mornings. Riders should allow an extra 30 minutes for travel time.

October 17, 2011 (El Cajon) -- The Grossmont Union High School District will host its eighth annual “Got Plans?” Career & College Fair for high school students and parents on Saturday, October 22, 2011, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Cuyamaca College. 

More than 6,000 students are expected to obtain information about post-secondary options at the fair which is a partnership between the Grossmont Union High School District and the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District.
