THE 11TH ANNUAL HEART OF MT. HELIX JURIED ART SHOW SEEKS ENTRIES

By Peggy Junker

June 14, 2018 (La Mesa) - With the publication of James Newland’s chronicled history of La Mesa and the Mt. Helix area titled “Around Mt. Helix,” word has gotten out that this community has been an artist’s hub since the turn of the 20th century.  From the area’s famous film-makers, performers and painters of the past, to today’s galleries and well-known residents, it remains a haven for the arts and art supporters in East County.

Dan and Roz Oserin, owners of Nainsook Framing + Art, expanded their part in the local art scene last year when the two hosted a juried art show for the heART of Mt. Helix event to benefit Mt. Helix Park.  For the second year, they will host the contest in their Nainsook Gallery along with the artists’ reception on Saturday July 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. This event is open to the public.

BOATS, BODIES AND BETRAYAL BRINGS MURDER ON THE HIGH SEAS TO LA MESA, ABOARD KIWANIS’ BENEFIT EVENT

By Miriam Raftery

June 5, 2018 (La Mesa) – It’s not every charity dinner that starts off with  cruise director Sue Nami (played by Janette Mills) welcome you aboard a 1949 cruise ship--or with a wine bottled labeled “rat poison” as the centerpiece.  Not to mention a billionaire bikini designer turning up dead – with a boatload of suspects and the entire audience helping to solve the crime.

That was the scenario at “Boats, Bodies and Betrayal,” a murder mystery dinner theatre produced by Kiwanis Club of La Mesa and Kiwanis Youth Development and Support Club of San Diego (KYDS) last Sunday evening at the La Mesa Community Center.

By Jennifer Coburn

May 16, 2018 (San Diego's East County) - We’ve all seen how projects like the popular blog and book Humans of New York connects people through photography. Real people are seen through a new lens as they share their life experiences. Snapshots and text serve as a means to share universal truth through unique images.

San Diego artist and photographer Jennifer G. Spencer is adding a new photographic element to this conversation with the release of her new book THE ARTIST PORTRAIT PROJECT: A PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMOIR OF PORTRAIT SESSIONS WITH SAN DIEGO ARTISTS (She Writes Press, July 12, 2018). Eleven of the artists live right here in East County, including La Mesa residents: Dottie Korn-Davis, David Beck-Brown, Suda House, Chris Lee, Polly Jacobs Giacchina, Jess Dominguez, and Mary Lynn Dominguez; El Cajon residents Ellen Phillips, Ron Tatro, and Bill Mosley; and Spring Valley resident Kim Knox.

THE WIZARD OF OZ REVIEW: EL CAJON VALLEY HIGH APRIL 26 - MAY 5: IT TAKES COURAGE TO SHINE

By Kathy Carpenter

April 28, 2018 (El Cajon) -  Among the buildings when El Cajon Valley opened its doors in 1955 was The Little Theatre, a building that stands by itself. I've really grown to like the little building over the past few years. It's the only school I've been to with anything like this. In the next year or two it will be demolished for a bigger and better (in some views), events center to house band, drama and Associated Student Body (ASB).

If you have performed in this theatre, you may want to come out to a show soon. Introduce your children or grandchildren to a place of fond memories which will not be around much longer.

PETER AND THE STARCATCHER REVIEW - ADVENTURE ON THE HIGH SEA APRIL 20 - MAY 13

By Kathy Carpenter

April 26, 2018 La Mesa) - Pirates, fairies, mermaids. starcatchers, and the little boy who never wanted to grow up: Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson do a great job explaining how Peter Pan, and the elements from the original story came about in a new novel. Rick Elice turned the novel into a play. Raylene J. Wall directed the Lamplighters version and brought the play to life. Fun, silly and well-acted, Peter and the Starcatcher makes you smile.

MONTE VISTA GREASE REVIEW - THE PLAY YOU LOVE, LOVE, LOVE APRIL 18-28

By Kathy Carpenter

April 23, 2018 (Spring Valley) – Realization: most of today's high school students probably haven't see the movie “Grease.” Since the movie is one of my favorites and was popular for so long, I guess I always figure everyone has seen the movie. Then I heard a girl behind me saying she had never seen the movie. Light-bulb moment: not only have these kids not seen the show, they probably really don't know fifties music. The whole show is an alien piece to them.
