By Susan A Mahalick

Photos by Zoë Jussel or Armando Muñoz

November 1, 2015 (Baja, Mexico) - “About an hour from the border, just south of Rosarito, Mexico, one can find a rare creature: a mermaid. Never mind that she’s made out of concrete and rebar. She doesn’t emerge from the ocean, but she provides a home and business for her maker. KPBS culture reporter Angela Carone visits the world’s only naked mermaid house,” KPBS reported.

FROM THE FIRE CHIEF'S CORNER: OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH!

Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna

October 25, 2015 (San Diego's East County) - Breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point. The good news is that many women can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early. A mammogram – the screening test for breast cancer – can help find breast cancer early when it’s easier to treat.

October 20, 2015 (East County) Pumpkins and Hard Squash. October is here and it’s time to pick out a pumpkin to carve for Halloween. Butternut, Acorn, Spaghetti, Kabocha squashes are all fresh autumn crops and in full season. Now is the time to pick out a Butternut or Kabocha squash and serve it up for dinner. My favorite is the Kabocha squash, with deep orange flesh inside and rich full flavor. Some delicious recipes for pumpkins and squash are located at the bottom of this article.

MEDIA WATCH: WHY IS MEDIA COVERING UP WHO WON DEMOCRATIC DEBATE, ACCORDING TO POLLS?

By Miriam Raftery

October 15, 2015 (San Diego) – After the CNN-hosted Democratic presidential candidate debate Wednesday,  all major polls--including CNN’s own poll--showed Bernie Sanders the winner by wide margins.  Yet post-debate coverage by CNN and other major media almost unanimously declared Hillary Clinton the winner.

No matter what your party or political preference, this sort of blatant media manipulation should disturb you. Equally disturbing to advocates of a free press, many pro-Sanders comments or those questioning the network’s impartiality were repeatedly removed off CNN’s website stories on the debate.  How come?

The fact that CNN’s owner, Time-Warner, is one of Clinton’s largest campaign donors appears to have influenced the news organization to skew its coverage to favor  its corporate parent’s preferred candidate.  Other media that has given large sums to Clinton's campaign or to the Clinton Foundation similarly ignored polls and declared her the winner.

ASK AN AUTHOR - IS PRINT PUBLISHING GOOD FOR INDIES?

Answering your questions about writing, publishing, and marketing books

By Sarka-Jonae Miller

Is print publishing still a safe marketing bet for indie authors, especially in this colossal world of ebook publishing? - Joseph Beekman, Fantasy Author

October 10, 2015 (San Diego's East County) - Many indie authors are attracted to ebook publishing because it's essentially free. Or so they think. The truth is that with print-on-demand services like CreateSpace, print publishing and ebook publishing cost about the same.

BAJA BLOG: A BAJA WEDDING, KASHUDI AND BRISELDA TIE THE KNOT

Article and photos by Susan A Mahalick

October 1, 2015 (Baja California, Mexico)--Kashudi is a talented drummer who lives down here who I have been fortunate to hear on more than one occasion. I heard him 4th of July at Angel’s Camp for their annual pig roast, and again right before his ceremony when he played to entertain his own guests on his rooftop of his home in La Misión at 3 pm on September 19th, a Saturday. It was another wonderful Baja day, not too hot, not too windy or humid. The bride and groom picked a fine day for their nuptials and about thirty people showed up, family from here for her as she is Mexican, family from the states for him, his son and daughter, and neighbors all attended to wish the couple well.

ON THE SILVER SCREEN: AN UNHOLY ALLIANCE (BLACK MASS)

By Brian Lafferty

September 27, 2015 (San Diego) – Black Mass (Scott Cooper, 2015) sounds like a video game title, but it’s definitely not fun and games. I went to bed a few hours after the screening unprepared for a restless night’s sleep. I endured a string of haunting dreams that was mercifully broken up by The Rascals’ A Beautiful Morning, the world’s best morning alarm.

MEDICAL MINUTE: WHAT IS A HOSPITALIST?

By Dr. Larry Emdur

September 23, 2015 (San Diego’s East County)--After a successful career as a board-certified internist and pulmonologist, Dr. Larry Emdur decided to become a hospitalist at Alvarado Hospital. A hospitalist is a fast-growing profession in which a physician’s primary focus is the general medical care of hospitalized patients.

The hospitalist profession has grown rapidly over the last decade because it allows hospital patients to be seen and treated by an in-house physician, rather than waiting for their regular doctor to come by after work or between patients. Not only is this more convenient and cost-effective for the patient, but it can improve patient safety.
