DRIVERS INJURED IN HEAD-ON CRASH IN LAKESIDE

May 8, 2017 (Lakeside) - A head-on collision on a rain-slick roadway near Lakeside left both drivers severely injured and one facing felony DUI charges, authorities said Monday.

The 29-year-old driver of a Chevy S-10 pickup truck drifted into oncoming traffic on Highway 8 Business and crashed into a Hyundai Accent near Los Coches Road at 11:06 p.m. Sunday, according to Officer M. Bennett of the California Highway Patrol.

May 6, 2017 (La Mesa/Lemon Grove/Rancho San Diego) - The Sheriff's Court Services Bureau Field Unit arrested nine people with outstanding arrest warrants in a sweep on Saturday morning, Sheriff's officials said.  The sweep is part of a law enforcement spread across San Diego's East County.

The accident happened before 4:30 a.m. in the 1800 block of Avocado Ave. near Skywood Drive involving a Mazda and a pickup truck.

May 2, 2017 (Julian) -- Each year,  the town of Julian comes alive with the sounds  of music—fiddle music, along with banjos, guitars, mandolins and mountain dulcimers at the annual Julian Fiddle and Pickin’ Contest. 

This year’s event will be held on Saturday, May 20th at the Julian Town Hall, plus on Friday night a Texas-style fiddle workshop will be led by two-time national grand fiddle champion Matthew Hartz.  (For details and a schedule visit www.SanDiegoFiddler.org)

Recently we’re seeing a revival of interest in the art of fiddling and more broadly, a Renaissance in traditional music both regionally and nationally.

May 1, 2017 (Ramona) -- Lane closures with one-way traffic control are scheduled on State Route 67 (SR-67) at the Dye Road/Highland Valley Road intersection in Ramona, Monday through Thursday from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. The closures are needed to accommodate intersection widening work for the SR-67 Dye Road/Highland Valley Road Project.

CHEERS! PADRE DAM MAKES BEER FROM WASTEWATER, WINS NATIONAL AWARD FOR WATER RECYCLING

April 29, 2017 (Santee) -- Padre Dam Municipal Water District, Helix Water District, City of El Cajon and the County of San Diego were recently honored with being named “Recycled Water Agency of the Year” - medium agency category - from the WateReuse California Section and the WateReuse California Board for their work on the East County Advanced Water Purification Program. To celebrate,  they teamed up with Ballast Point Brewing Company to serve up a”Padre Dam Pilsner,”  a  beer made with treated wastewater from the East County Advanced Water Purification Program  at a reception last month at the Westin hotel downtown.

SUSPECTED DRUNK DRIVER ARRESTED AFTER PURSUIT

April 29, 2017 (San Diego’s East County) – Simone Bahou, 52, was arrested April 27th after fleeing from Sheriff’s deputies.

According to Sergeant M. Hettinger, a Sheriff’s deputy responded to a call reporting a suspicious person drinking alcohol in his vehicle behind the CVS store at 3749 Avocado Boulevard in unincorporated La Mesa. Upon arrival, the suspect, (later identified as Bahou, started his vehicle and slowly drove past the deputy as he approached on foot.

April 27, 2017 (Santa Ysabel) – Patrick Clay, a parolee with a felony warrant, was taken into custody at 7:20 this evening after a pursuit that included a helicopter, patrol vehicle, deputies on foot and a Sheriff’s canine that ultimately subdued the subject.

April 27, 2017 (San Diego) - The San Diego County Water Authority Board of Directors today authorized the Water Authority, in conjunction with the City of San Diego, to begin seeking detailed proposals for a potential energy storage facility at San Vicente Reservoir. The project could help ease pressure on electric grids by producing locally generated renewable energy on demand, and also lessen upward pressure on water rates by providing a new source of revenue.

April 27, 2017 (Spring Valley) - Mount Miguel softball is a little worse for wear; they’re 5-7 overall and 1-3 in league play so far heading into today’s game against El Capitan.  The Vaqueros are a different story; they sport a decent 12-10 overall record, but are undefeated in league play with a 4-0 record coming into today.  Sophomore Nya Maga started on the hill for the Matadors against junior Elena Laddon for the Vaqueros.

On Saturday,  I headed out to the mountains, taking the Highway 79 exit north off I-8 to start with a visit to Green Valley Falls in Rancho Cuyamaca State Park, followed by stops at Lake Cuyamaca  and picturesque Julian.
