HOOKAH, MARIJUANA USE INCREASES AMONG LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Youth focus group shows growing concern

January 5, 2014 (Spring Valley)– “After the assembly we had last week, I went to the bathroom. It was really smoky. I don’t think it was weed. It was hookah or something. I saw it and smelled it and just got out.”

Stories like this were common when students at a local East County high school participated in a focus group last month to discuss current drug trends on their campus, the Grossmont Union High School District reports.

TAKEDA TO PLANT 2,000 TREES ALONG SAN DIEGO RIVER IN SANTEE

January 5, 2014 (Santee)--This is a story made in the shade!  Takeda California, a pharmaceutical company,  plans to plant 2,000 trees along a one-mile-stretch of the San Diego River in Santee’s new Walker Preserve on January 20.  That’s 20 times more trees than the drug discovery company used in paper during the entire last year.

The trees will be planted by Takeda’s employees, family members and friends.  The effort will benefit the San Diego River Park Foundation and Walker Preserve by introducing native Coast Live Oak, Scrub Oak, Englemann Oak, Laurel Sumac, Cottonwood, Sycamore, Lemonade Berry and Elderberry to lands previously used for mining operations.

COLUMN: POLITICAL REFLECTIONS: 2013 - THE YEAR OF CRASH AND BURN

By Mark Gabrish Conlan

January 5, 2014 (San Diego) -- If nothing else, 2013 will go down in history as a year that showed up just how silly the whole notion of punditry is. People read columns like this in hopes that the people writing them have some special wisdom that will not only explain to them what’s happening in politics now but what’s likely to happen in the future. Often we’re as clueless as anyone else. As Doyle McManus recently admitted in the Los Angeles Times, at this time last year he was expecting President Obama to be able to take full advantage of his resounding re-election victory and the Republicans in Congress to moderate their opposition and maybe even work with him to get things done.

CITY OF LA MESA WINS APPEAL OF LAWSUIT OVER USE OF CITY PROPERTY NEAR BRIERCREST PARK

January 5, 2014 (La Mesa)--The Fourth Appellate District Court of Appeals on December 16th ruled in favor of the City of La Mesa in an appeal of a lawsuit centered on a series of lease agreements to develop and operate housing facilities for older adults in La Mesa. The ruling in Briercrest Development, L.P. v. City of La Mesa will allow the City to recoup attorney fees.

City Manager, David E. Witt said of the ruling, “It is a great relief to finally regain control of the City's property. The concept of this development area was to create a park (Briercrest Park) that promoted healing and surround the park with compatible uses. This decision will allow the City to move forward to put this property to a productive use for the community.”

FEDERAL RULE CHANGE WILL HARM EAGLES, CHARGES LOCAL CONSERVATION GROUP

San Diego and Imperial County Eagles Are at Risk

January 5, 2014 (San Diego’s East County)  -- In December, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) released its final decision to weaken a key rule that protects Bald and Golden Eagles, in order to more quickly develop renewable energy.

The Protect Our Communities Foundation (POC), a nonprofit community organization in San Diego’s East County, opposes this rule change stating it would harm eagles, has not been adequately studied, and violates federal law. Two local  wind projects would be affected by the change.

“Eagles symbolize America’s national heritage and deserve more protection, not less. This rule change will make it harder to protect the remaining eagles that San Diegans love,” said Donna Tisdale, POC’s Secretary.

A HEARTY RECOVERY

By Miriam Raftery

Leon Thompson also contributed to this report

January 3, 2014 -- As many of you know, our cofounder of East County Magazine and our own "East County Eater" columnist Leon Thompson recently had open heart surgery to patch him up after years of indulgent eating clogged up his arteries.  Already a survivor of one heart attack, like many people in this situation, Leon was initially hesitant to undergo such a seemingly drastic procedure.

Five days after his operation, which wound up being a quintuple bypass, Leon  insisted that we bring our sound equipment to his room at Grossmont Hospital so that he won't miss a beat in recording for our radio show. For his return to the radio, we started out by interviewing Leon on his amazing recovery, which is an inspiration to anyone facing open heart surgery.

Hear for yourself how energetic he's feeling - and how he's already setting the pace for walking a mile a day around the recovery ward.

This interview originally aired on our East County Magazine Show on KNSJ Radio:  http://k007.kiwi6.com/hotlink/1x5gj5h5h7/Leon-HospitalInterviewPost-Surgery.mp3 .

(Note: You can also read Leon's "Heartfelt Message" to our readers, penned along with a review of hospital food just days before his surgery, here: http://www.eastcountymagazine.org/heartfelt-message)

ENDANGERED BIGHORN SPOTTED IN MCCAIN VALLEY

January 2, 2014 (McCain Valley) -- While hiking in McCain Valley north of Sacatone Road on New Year's Day, Laurie Baker and her husband encountered these two Peninsular Bighorn rams.

"What a pleasant surprise!" Baker exclaimed of her New Year's discovery -- an important sighting, since the draft environmental impact statement for Iberdrola Renewables' planned Tule Wind project in McCain Valley concludes that wind turbines aren "located outside of critical habitat areas and will not have any detrimental impacts on sheep."

Finding proof of the endangered animals doesn't assure their protection, however.  When Pattern Energy's Ocotillo Express Wind Facility was approved, the project's environmental report similarly concluded that the site was not bighorn habitat.  When photos of a herd of bighorn on the project site were sent to then Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, he issued take permits allowing up to 10 bighorn ewes and lambs to be killed, allowing the project to proceed at the expense of this critically endangered species which is at risk of extinction, according to the Bighorn Institute.

GOVERNOR PARDONS FIREFIGHTER WHO HELPED SAVE TEEN IN HARRIS FIRE

By Miriam Raftery

January 1, 2014 (San Diego's East County) -- Governor Jerry Brown granted a Christmas Eve pardon to a firefighter who saved a teenager’s life during the Harris Fire in Potrero after suffering serious burns herself.

Brooke Linman had been convicted of firearms, drug and theft charges almost 20 years ago, but straightened her life out and began working as a firefighter in 2001. In 2007, her Cal-Fire crew was sent to help save homes in Potrero, where they helped evacuate Richard Varshock and his father, Thomas Varshock, who had been trying to defend their home against the firestorm. But  the fire engine was overcome and caught fire, forcing them all  to race on foot through a wall of flames.
