By Miriam Raftery

August 22, 2013 (Santee) –Founded in Santa Ysabel half a century ago, Dudley’s Bakery has gained fame across the region for its tempting array of freshly baked bread varieties such as Julian apple nut and jalapeno cheese breads.  Long a secret of travelers through East County’s backcountry, Dudley’s later gained fame after winning the U-T San Diego’s “Reader’s Choice” poll as best bakery in the county three years in a row.

Now, fans of Dudley’s breads, fruit bars, pies and more won’t have to drive to the mountains.  Dudley’s has announced plans to open up Dudley’s Bakery and Deli in the Santee Town Center in Santee this September.

HELP NEEDED TO FUND SURGERY FOR RESCUED DOG

August 8, 2013 (San Diego’s East County) – About two weeks ago, two East County residents, Courtney Case and Victoria Haynes, rescued a female stray Chihuahua-Dachshund mix in Bakersfield. Now she is seeking donations to fund surgery for the rescued dog, which is needed to save her from a degenerative disease.

“She did not have a collar, her nails were painfully overgrown, and she had acquired a limp on her back hind leg,” said Case, an assistant manager at Partnerships with Industry in Santee. “After returning to East County, she had already found a permanent home with a loving family; they fell in love with her sweet and loving personality instantly. Her new family got her all cleaned up and named her Koa, but unfortunately her limp persisted. Koa was taken to the vet to get X-rays and she was diagnosed with Legg-Calvé-Perthes syndrome. This involves spontaneous degeneration of the head on the femur bone. Unfortunately, it was determined that she needs immediate surgery or her condition would worsen and cause her even more tremendous pain and no use of her back right leg.”

A small plane made an emergency landing on the median of Highway 52 at the junction of State Route 125 in Santee shortly after 6 p.m. today.

ECM photojournalist Paul Kruze was driving on the freeway when he witnessed the startling event.

“I was on my way to a concert when all of a sudden I saw this thing landing right in front of me. It was surreal.  I had the same exact feeling as watching the plane fly into the World Trade Center—like watching a movie,” he said, then praised the pilot’s skill. “It was very controlled and the pilot obviously knew what he was doing.”

SANTEE COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER FOR "COFFEE CORNER BENEFIT ALL 4 DYLAN"

By Janis Mork

April 29, 2013 (Santee)- Recently, a Coffee Corner benefit was held for Dylan Pourner, a kindergarten boy with brain cancer, in Santee. Organizers and students who helped out wore bracelets that said, “We Love Dylan…The greatest of these is love,” and “We Love Dylan” t-shirt.  A concert was also held. Now, local schools are pitching in to help raise funds to help Dylan and his family.

ECM interviewed Gina Milton, one of the organizers. She told us that Dylan has a glioma, a non-operable mass. “He lost control of his hands and he can’t stand. The tumor is on the brain stem. It keeps growing and putting pressure on his brain.” But there is hope; he started a new treatment a few weeks ago and is expected to be getting it for eight weeks.
