HOMICIDE IN SANTEE

Update 6 p.m.: The suspect has been identified as Paul Carl Tomasini. He is being charged with murder, the Sheriff's office reports this evening.

October 1, 2012 (Santee)—A man with stab wounds is being questioned by Sheriff’s homicide detectives in connection with the death of a woman found deceased in a home in the 10500 block of Strathmore Drive in Santee last night.

INCUMBENTS AND CHALLENGERS CLASH IN SANTEE DEBATE

September 20, 2012 (Santee)—Candidates for Santee’s City Council and Mayoral races met at the City Council complex for a candidate forum organized by the League of Women Voters and moderated by Dana Quitner. Mayor Randy Voepel squared off against Rudy Reyes, while long-time Councilman Jack Dale faced off against challenger Maggie Acerra.

The mostly-friendly debate touched on a series of issues of importance for the city. These ranged from the budget and how the end of redevelopment agencies has affected the city to public safety, including how the Cedar fire affected both Reyes and Voepel. Marijuana medical collectives, also a hot issue, drew some fiery responses.

September 20, 2012 (Santee)Almond milk - check.  Soy milk - check.  Coffee?  Checkmate.  Where? At  Kaffee Meister---which opened September 17 in the Carlton Oaks Plaza in Santee.   The original Kaffee Meister is a coffee bar and drive-thru located next to the Big Red Barn in Lakeside.

“It will be a quality, community coffee shop,” according to Chester McLaughlin, son-in-law to owners Mike and Lesley Emmons.

BEAT CANCER BOOT CAMP COMES TO SANTEE SEPT. 8

 
 
 
September 1, 2012 (Santee) – Beat Cancer Boot Camp is a fitness based program designed to help cancer survivors stay active during treatment and beyond. It’s also open to friends and family of those whose lives have been touched by cancer. On Saturday, September 8 at 8:30, the program kicks off in Santee’s Mast Park, 9125 Carlton Hills Blvd.
 
The program is geared toward all fitness levels so everyone can participate, utilizing scaled-down Navy Seal training fitness methods to empower participants.

MOUNTAIN LION SPOTTED IN SANTEE NEIGHBORHOOD

August 6, 2012 (Santee)--A mountain lion has been reported in the 10700 block of Princess Arlene, a residential neighborhood in Santee.  Incident Page Network indicates that San Diego Sheriff and animal control officers are conducting a search of the area.

A mountain lion was also spotted days ago in an Alpine residential neighborhood.  Mountain lions are native to our region, though the normally shy animals are rarely seen.  Shooting a mountain lion is illegal in California, except in cases where a permit is obtained such as to address livestock predation.  Violators have faced stiff penalties.

PADRE DAM WEIGHS RATE HIKE: PUBLIC FORUM THURSDAY JULY 26

July 25, 2012 (San Diego’s East County)—Padre Dam Municipal Water District are considering a rate hike on its 24,000 customers in East County.

On Thursday, July 26 at 6 p.m., the District will hold a workshop at its board room (9300 Fanita Parkway in Santee) to explain the proposal and answer questions.

Solar Shines Bright To Help San Diego Fight Construction Of Gas Power Plant 

July 25, 2012 (Santee) – San Diego’s Planning Commission voted last week against rezoning open space near Mission Trails Regional Park to install a gas-fired power plant. But the decision can be appealed at City Council.  Residents in Santee and San Diego have voiced strong opposition to the Quail Brush power plant on the site  bordering both communities. 

“We have created the San Diego Solar Program to offer a reliable clean energy solution that benefits our local communities,” said Daniel Sullivan, founder and president of Sullivan Solar Power. “Not only are program participants saving money and helping our region meet our energy demands, they are getting paid to do so.”

To help with declaring energy independence, a free San Diego Solar Program informational solar luncheon is being hosted for East County residents on Saturday, August 4, at 11 a.m. at Santee City Hall, Civic Building #7 (10601 Magnolia Ave, Santee, CA 92071).

PLANE MAKES EMERGENCY LANDING ON HIGHWAY 67

July 21, 2012 (Santee) – Pilot Wayne Oehler, 79 of El Cajon landed safely on State Route 67 in Santee this morning at 10 a.m. after the engine on his homemade plane locked up.

A California Highway Patrol officer noticed the Europa plane attempting to land on the northbound side of the highway and started a traffic break, helping the plane to land safely at the Riverford Road off-ramp, UT-San Diego reported.

BASEBALL SCAM ARTIST ARRESTED

 

July 11, 2012 (San Diego’s East County)—Seth Tucker, 22, was arrested this morning for a scam in which he allegedly asked Santee residents for donations to send a local high school baseball team to Maui for a championship game.

“Investigators learned that Tucker had been doing this scam for several months in several different neighbors,” said Sgt. Tom Poulin.  “He would always represent himself as a player for the local high school team of the area he was in.”

SANTEE SALUTES MOVES TO NEW LOCATION FOR JULY 4 FESTIVITIES & FIREWORKS

June 28, 2012 (Santee) – The City of Santee will host “Santee Salutes” festivities on July 4 featuring live musical entertainment by 80z All Stars, patriotic ceremonies, an inflatable zone for kids, food trucks,  and of course, fireworks.

This year, the event moves to a new location in Town Center Community Park East at 550 Park Center Drive in Santee.  Festivities run from 3:30-9:30 p.m..  A patriotic ceremony with color guard will be held at 6 p.m. and the fireworks display starts at 9 p.m.

PADRE DAM BOARD APPROVES NEW MEMORANDUMS OF UNDERSTANDING WITH EMPLOYEES’ ASSOCIATIONS

 
April 20, 2012 (Santee) -- The Padre Dam Municipal Water District’s Board of Directors approved new Memorandum’s of Understanding (MOU) between the District and the Padre Dam Employees’ Association (PDEA) and the Mid-Management and Confidential Association (MMCA) today. The new MOUs will facilitate a significant change, requiring employees’ to pay a larger portion into the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) among other items that will save ratepayer dollars.

March 31, 2012 (Santee) – Santee Mayor Randy Voepel didn’t mince words. “This is a declaration of war,” he said at Wednesday night’s City Council meeting, where Councilmembers voted unanimously to oppose the gas-fired Quail Brush power plant. 

The 100 megawatt (MW) “peaker” power plant is proposed on 10 acres adjacent to Mission Trails Regional Park, close to West Hills High School and homes.

March 25, 2012 (San Diego/Santee) – Seventeen staffers from the California Energy Commission heard from concerned residents at a standing-room-only workshop on a proposed gas-fired power plant this week at Mission Trails Regional Park.  Over 60 residents filled out speaker cards to oppose the controversial project and dozens more packed the room.  

In emotionally charged testimony, residents pleaded for the project to be withdrawn or approval denied.  They voiced concerns over the dangers pose by wildfire and explosions as well as worries over noise, traffic, air pollution, visual blight, and impacts on wildlife, homes, schools, and Mission Trails Regional Park.

CA ENERGY COMMISSION TO HOLD PUBLIC WORKSHOP ON QUAIL BRUSH POWER PLANT PROJECT MARCH 22 AT MISSION TRAILS

March 21, 2012- The California Energy Commission (CEC) will hold a workshop at 5 p.m. this Thursday, March 22 at Mission Trails to discuss the proposed Quail Brush Generation Project being developed by Quail Brush Genco, LLC, a subsidiary of Cogentrix Energy.

According to project documents, the Quail Brush Generation Project is a 100-megawatt natural gas power plant under long-term contract with SDG&E. The power plant is designed to support renewable resources and deliver power only when needed.

With reapportionment, Jones 77th district will become the 71st Assembly District.  The district picks up some new areas including Pine Valley, Julian, Ramona, and Borrego Springs in San Diego County, as well as portions of Riverside County.

EDGEMOOR UNVEILED A NEW COMMUNITY GARDEN

March 8, 2012 (Santee) -- County officials and community partners unveiled the new volunteer garden at Edgemoor in Santee yesterday.

The volunteer garden, located at 255 Park Center Dr., is open to both community residents and County staff to increase access to fresh produce and physical activity. Residents of Edgemoor, will be involved in the garden through the Recreational Therapy Unit.
