FROM THE FIRE CHIEF'S CORNER: CINCO DE MAYO SAFETY

By Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna

Hey Hombre, Listen Up! Señoritas too...

April 27, 2015 (San Diego's East County) - I know it’s Cinco de Mayo May 5th, but too much alcohol makes you look and act foolish, and it’s also a factor in aggressive and unwanted behavior.  Be the bigger hombre and just “let it go” if you have an unpleasant encounter with someone who may be under the influence of insecurity, alcohol or both.  It’s not worth the confrontation.

BAJA BLOG: LA SALINA CANTINA IN LA MISION, A REAL MEXICAN CANTINA

Story and photos by Susan A Mahalick

April 20, 2015 (Baja, Mexico)--Located as an exit off the toll road, or Cuota, is La Salina at Km 73. Two exits after crossing the bridge with the estuary to the left as you travel south from Rosarito is a public beach with palapas to the right. It is Easter weekend which traditionally starts the official camping on the beaches, no matter the weather, as Mexicali, Tijuana and Tecate empty out for all the free camping in this part of Baja. Here the fee is $500 pesos, around $4 at the current exchange rate, per vehicle which accounts for this beach not being overcrowded.

BREW BEAT: NEXT DOOR, A COZY NEIGHBORHOOD BEER AND WINE BAR

By Ed Barrena

March 15, 2015 (La Mesa)--A trip to Next Door Beer and Wine Bar is a good idea, especially if you happen to be a beer person who spends a significant amount of time with wine people, or vice-versa.

With a nice variety of craft beers on tap and a fine wine selection, this is a great place to spend some quality time with special company. The atmosphere is less “Bar” and more “Next Door”, with a certain coziness that will enhance any gathering.

PRODUCE PICKS: KALE IS KING (LOCALLY GROWN)

Recipe:  Sauteed Sherry Kale

By Greg Dunne

April 19, 2015 (Alpine)--Wow, Easter dinner was good! Most of the dinner was healthy – but maybe I had a bit too much dressing on the salad, or went a little heavy with gravy on the mashed potatoes and then sampled all of the desert items even though I was full. Sautéing some fresh greens this week will be delicious and healthy and will do the trick on getting back to eating healthy.

EARTHTALK(R): DANGERS OF SUNSCREENS

EarthTalk®

From the Editors of E - The Environmental Magazine

Caption: Some all-natural, mineral-based sunscreens may be chalky going on but could be safer than their chemical counterparts. Credit: Indexorama, Flickr CC

Dear EarthTalk: I’ve been hearing a lot about the dangers of sunscreens. What is the latest on efforts to make them safer and more effective?                                 -- Phyllis Lothran, Tallahassee, FL

April 14, 2015 (San Diego’s East County) - Greater awareness about what’s in everyday products and increased interest in healthy living means there has never been a better time to re-evaluate which sunscreens you use. The ingredients in some common chemical-based sunscreens are known to cause allergic reactions for some people and have been linked to reproductive and behavioral problems in animal studies. But luckily for the sun-safe and health conscious among us, there are lots of widely available all-natural, mineral-based sunscreen formulations that won’t cause any health problems on store shelves these days.
