LA MESA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PREPARES FOR 4TH ANNUAL “TASTE OF LA MESA – TASTE OF THE CENTURY” JUNE 11

May 1, 2012 (La Mesa) --  The La Mesa Chamber of Commerce announced that the fourth annual “Taste of La Mesa - Taste of the Century” event will be held on June 11 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the La Mesa Community Center, 4975 Memorial Drive, La Mesa. This year the Chamber has added “Taste of the Century” to celebrate the City of La Mesaʼs 100th Anniversary.

The evening allows guests to sample fare from many local restaurants and food providers, as well as winetasting and craft beers.

LABOR COUNCIL LEADER LORENA GONZALEZ TO SPEAK MAY 2 IN LA MESA

April 28, 2012 (La Mesa) – Labor Council Leader, Lorena Gonzalez, will be speaking at the La Mesa Foothills Democratic Club's May 2 General Meeting on labor's increasingly important role in the 2012 election. The program will be held at the La Mesa Community Center at 4975 Memorial Drive, La Mesa, from 7 to 8:30 pm.

She will discuss how Citizen's United has pushed labor into an ever more important role in many races across the country. The Citizen's United ruling opened the floodgates for unfettered and unaccountable corporate campaign-giving. As a result, labor and working people have been required to raise funds to counter the influence of the enormous funds corporations raise.

VIEJAS CASINO OPENS NEW HIGH-STAKES BINGO ROOM

 

March 28, 2012 – Viejas Casino reached a major milestone, with the opening of a new high-stakes, high tech Bingo Room. Tribal elders, tribal leaders, local dignitaries, Chamber of Commerce representatives and the public all joined in the Grand Opening of the new Bingo Room. The ceremonies included a Tribal Blessing, traditional Native American Bird Songs and a ribbon cutting.

SDG&E LAUNCHES SMART GRID PRIVACY INITIATIVE

 

Partnership with Privacy Commissioner of Ontario, Canada, will bring Privacy by Design best practices to customer offerings

 

March 9, 2012 (San Diego) – San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) and the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario, Canada, has released a joint paper to document the incorporation of Privacy by Design into SDG&E’s smart grid initiative.  

According to an SDG&E press release, this partnership is the first of its kind in the United States, and emphasizes the “commitment of the company in designing, building and operating a secure, reliable and trustworthy smart grid that safeguards customer privacy” from the start.

Lauderdale, Fla. The Climate Leadership Awards recognize organizations that go beyond business as usual in the management and reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and are presented by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Association of Climate Change Officers (ACCO), the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES) (formerly the Pew Center on Global Climate Change), and The Climate Registry (TCR).

RETAIL GIANT FRESH & EASY TO OPEN STORE IN ALPINE AT SITE OF FORMER DANIEL’S MARKET


February 1, 2012 (Alpine) –Fresh & Easy Neighborhood market, owned by British retail powerhouse Tesco, has announced plans to open an Alpine store at the site of the former Daniel’s Market. According to the San Diego Business Journal, Fresh & Easy has signed a 10-year lease to open a 22,015 square foot retail store in the Alpine Creek Town Center.

HEALTHCARE WORKERS STRIKE AT KAISER

February 1, 2012 (San Diego)--   The National Union of Health Care Workers (NUHW) called for a one-day strike yesterday at all Kaiser Permanente healthcare facilities statewide in California.  In San Diego the picket line walking started at six in the morning and ended at 10 p.m. outside Kaiser Hospital on Zion, with about 50 union members and supporters walking the line. Mark McDonald of La Mesa Carpet & Linoleum and Brad Belus of Cable, Pipe and Leak Detection of El Cajon are among  several BBB accredited businesses touting the value of the BBB to their company and consumers in the community on about 2,000 30-second commercial spots airing in January on 19 English-language and nine Spanish-language stations.

Man crushed in EDCO packing machine remains hospitalized

January 19, 2012 (Lemon Grove) – A worker crushed inside a packing machine December 31 at an EDCO recycling center in Lemon Grove remains hospitalized three weeks later, ECM has learned.

“We understand his condition is improving,” said John Snyder, general manager at EDCO.  Snyder declined to provide the worker’s name or details of his injuries, citing medical privacy laws. But he said the man, 57, is a long-time employee.
