 CDC is in high gear, with politically correct advice on Zika. Meanwhile, cases of dengue in Mexico have topped 10,000. Dengue is caused by a related but far more serious virus, carried by same Aedes aegypti mosquito. And 78,000 people in Africa die every year of another relative, yellow fever. The vector was coming under good control decades ago, but is reemerging now. Asking “why” should be the main response to Zika.

April 27, 2016 (San Diego) -- According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Zika is, like Ebola, a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Now the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated that it is “clear” that the Zika virus causes a serious birth defect, microcephaly (small head).

April 27, 2016 (San Diego) — Mayor Kevin Faulconer is being rocked by criticism after a homeless advocacy group posted photos on Facebook of sharp, jagged rocks installed by the city of San Diego beneath an overpass where homeless people had been sleeping and taking shelter during storms. San Diego has no year-round homeless shelter and has also been conducting sweeps to confiscate belongings of homeless individuals.

April 27, 2016 (Washington D.C.) – According to a new study in the journal Pediatrics, 17,230 children under the age of 6 have been accidentally poisoned by ingesting laundry detergent pods in a one year period from 2013 to 2014. In all, 769 children were hospitalized, 30 went into a coma and two died.  The latest victim is a 7-month-old baby boy in Florida, who died.

April 27, 2016 (San Diego) -- Voters in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island went to the polls on Tuesday to help select the Republican and Democratic candidates for president. Both frontrunners added handily to their delegate count, with business and reality TV celebrity Donald Trump sweeping all five north-eastern states and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton winning four out of five.

April 27, 2016 (San Diego) -- California Senator Barbara Boxer’s upcoming retirement has opened up a free-for-all in the race to replace her.  The ballot will have 34 names –and on Monday, the top five of those contenders took stage for a debate cosponsored by KCRA-TV and the University of the Pacific.

April 26, 2016 (Washington D.C.) – Earlier this month, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and the American Society of Pediatrics have issued new guidelines for parents recommending limits on inorganic arsenic in rice baby foods.  The FDA also recommends that parents feed babies a variety of cereals such as oatmeal and barley, but stops short of recommending eliminating of rice, a common first solid food for many young children.
