By Jennifer Coburn

May 16, 2018 (San Diego's East County) - We’ve all seen how projects like the popular blog and book Humans of New York connects people through photography. Real people are seen through a new lens as they share their life experiences. Snapshots and text serve as a means to share universal truth through unique images.

San Diego artist and photographer Jennifer G. Spencer is adding a new photographic element to this conversation with the release of her new book THE ARTIST PORTRAIT PROJECT: A PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMOIR OF PORTRAIT SESSIONS WITH SAN DIEGO ARTISTS (She Writes Press, July 12, 2018). Eleven of the artists live right here in East County, including La Mesa residents: Dottie Korn-Davis, David Beck-Brown, Suda House, Chris Lee, Polly Jacobs Giacchina, Jess Dominguez, and Mary Lynn Dominguez; El Cajon residents Ellen Phillips, Ron Tatro, and Bill Mosley; and Spring Valley resident Kim Knox.

Backcountry hidden pleasures:   Our guide to unique adventures in San Diego’s beautiful backcountry

By Liz Orient

May 16, 2018 (Anza-Borrego) -- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is a unique destination for anyone looking for a fun day trip from San Diego. There are two classes of people: those who love the desert and those who hate the desert. I happen to be one who enjoys the bizarre plants, resourceful animals, and how the mountains change colors at sunset. I hadn't been to Anza-Borrego in several years and it was time to revisit one of my favorite places in California!

May 15, 2018 (El Cajon) - CIF playoffs for softball have started and today, ECM Sports traveled to Valhalla High for a Division II matchup between the Norsemen (women, for our politically correct readers…) and the Centurions of University City.  The Norsemen were undefeated in the Grossmont League with an 8-0 record.  The Centurions struggled a bit this season, finishing 3-5 in the City - Western League, but still made it to the playoffs thanks to their 14-12 overall record.  Junior Delaney Stettler started on the hill for the Norsemen against senior Natalie Minteer for University City.

CALIF. REPUBLICANS DENOUNCE NEO-NAZI RUNNING FOR SENATE, DECLINE TO ENDORSE IN GOVERNOR’S RACE

By Miriam Raftery

May 11, 2018 (San Diego) – The California Republican Party ejected Patrick Little from its state convention in San Diego last weekend, denouncing the candidate’s neo-Nazi views.   Ballots mailed this week list Little as a Republican “civil rights” advocate, but in fact he advocates anti-Semitic views and posted a video of himself spitting on and stomping the Israeli flag. Many of his videos have been removed off Facebook as offensive hate speech.

“There's no room for that kind of hate speech that that man uses," Cynthia Bryant, executive director of the Calif. Republican Party, told the Los Angeles Times.

Little alarmed many after a recent poll showed him in second place after Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), the incumbent.

The state GOP made no endorsement in the Senate race, nor in the Governor’s race. The top two candidates in each statewide race will advance to the November election.
