By Rebecca J Williamson

January 4, 2013 (La Mesa)--Madeleine Falco is taking date night to a higher standard by going on a date to the swearing in ceremony of President Barack Obama on January 21, 2013 in Washington, D.C.

So how did this all happen?  U.S. House of Representative’s Congresswoman Susan Davis, representing the 53rd district, offered a lottery for tickets to the inauguration ceremony shortly after the presidential election.  Her constituents had to enter their name in the lottery to be selected. Falco and a male friend, entered their names.

PHOTO OF THE WEEK: TALKING TURKEY

January 4, 2013 (San Diego's East County)--ECM editor Miriam Raftery photographed this healthy-looking flock of wild turkeys near Cuyamaca. There is some debate on whether turkeys are native or non-native in our region.  Thousands of wild turkeys present today in our backcountry are descendants of wild turkeys released in 1993 by hunting groups.  But it's quite possible that turkeys here are in fact a reintroduction ofdescendants from native birds that inhabited southern California eons ago.

Ancient remains of M. Califiornica, a now-extinct species of wild turkeys and a predecessor of modern turkeys, have been found in the La Brea tar pits in Los Angeles County.

ON THE SILVER SCREEN: THE DRAMATIC SEARCH FOR OSAMA BIN LADEN (ZERO DARK THIRTY)

By Brian Lafferty

January 4, 2013 (San Diego) -- A day or so after the Zero Dark Thirty screening, a colleague wanted to know why I said it would rank very high in my Top Ten list.  I struggled to come up with an answer.  At the time, I just knew in my heart and somewhere in my head that it was not only one of the best films of the year, but the best Hollywood film of 2012.  I had this same feeling as I watched Samsara, Compliance, and In Darkness.  In each case, it wasn't until I wrote the reviews that I figured out why these films would earn spots in my upcoming Best of 2012 column.

HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED INTO VIOLENT DEATH OF WOMAN FOUND BY ROAD IN LEMON GROVE

By Miriam Raftery

January 3, 2013 (Lemon Grove) –Jennifer Rene Krajnak, 30, has died shortly after Sheriff’s deputies on patrol found her lying beside the road bleeding from a severe head injury at 2:00 this morning. She was discovered in the 7600 block of Pacific Avenue near Olive Street and died about a half hour later after being transported to a hospital.

“There was a shell casing found at the crime scene,” confirmed Lieutenant Glenn Giannantonio, who said it is not certain if the casing was related to this incident.  Channel 7 News reports officials said she may have suffered multple gunshot wounds.  Krajnak had filed a restraining order alleging domestic abuse in 2010 against a former boyfriend, but later vacated the order after he claimed self defense. Authorities have indicated he is not a suspect, 7 News reports.

The death comes just days after someone shot through the window of a vehicle driven by a woman with her 10-year-old  son on December 26 on Glencoe Street in Lemon Grove, about two miles away.  ECM has left word with Sheriff Homicide investigators to find out if the incidents could possibly be related.  The victim in that case reported being passed by a white two-door coupe moments before the shot was fired.

By Nancy White

January 3, 2013 (San Diego County)--After the binges of the holidays, who hasn’t noticed the post-holiday blahs? ISSA IN STORM OF CONTROVERSY FOR BACKING HOUSE LEADERSHIP'S BLOCKING OF HURRICANE SANDY RELIEF BILL

January 3, 2013 (San Diego)-- Hurricane Sandy slammed into the East Coast 66 days ago, but the House Republican leadership has thus far refused to bring up a measure to provide relief to survivors. Among the staunchest defenders of that decision is San Diego Republican Congressman Darrell Issa. In a Fox News interview, Issa claimed the measure was loaded with pork. But now Issa has drawn scathing criticism from fellow Republican Congressmen Peter King and Michael Grimms of New York, areas hit hard by the storm.

King said, "Darrell Issa is 1,000 percent wrong. There is absolutely no pork in the bill." He noted that less than one percent of the Senate bill formerly included funds for Alaska, which were removed from the House version.  King added, “I wish Darrell Issa had learned that and looked into that before he went public and said that my constituents should not get their homes rebuilt, should not have the waste management plants rebuilt, that Governor Christie should not be given the opportunity to rebuild New Jersey and Governor Cuomo in New York."

QUAIL BRUSH DEVELOPER SELLS TO THE CARLYLE GROUP

Gas-powered plant is pitched to provide backup for non-windy days at Ocotillo wind project—also owned by Carlyle

By Miriam Raftery

January 2, 2013 (San Diego’s East County ) –Cogentrix has sold a majority of its North American assets, including Quail Brush GENCO (applicant for the Quail Brush power plant near Mission Trails) to subsidiaries of Carlyle Entities, managed by the Carlyle Group.   View letter to  California Energy Commission with details.

Cogentrix had argued that the Quail Brush gas-fired “peaker” power plant was necessary to meet energy needs when there is now enough wind or sunshine for large-scale wind and solar projects.

Carlyle's 2009 Annual Report confirms that Carlyle also founded Pattern Energy, developer of the Ocotillo Express Wind project, a site that has drawn criticism for minimal wind resources.  But now, if Quail Brush is built, Carlyle stands to profit whether the wind blows or not.

AAA WARNS MOTORISTS AGAINST USE OF E-15 FUEL WHICH CAN VOID AUTO WARRANTIES

Automobile Association of America calls on government to halt sale

By Miriam Raftery

January 2, 2013 (San Diego’s East County) – The American Automobile Association (AAA) has issued a press release urging the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to suspend sale of E15 fuel (a blend of 15% ethanol from corn and 85% gasoline).  AAA warns that 13 major automobile manufacturers say that use of E15 fuel could void warranty claims.

E15 fuel is not currently sold in California, however it is allowed in approximately 30 states and is currently available for sale in several.  The EPA authorized its sale in June 2012 over objections of the auto industry.

READER'S EDITORIAL: FREEDOM VS. GUN CONTROL - AN ABSURD DICHOTOMY

By Joel A. Harrison, PhD, MPH

January 2, 2013 (San Diego)--Since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut the news and internet has been abuzz with some variant of “Freedom vs Gun Control,” as if no reasonable rational alternative exists beyond this absolute dichotomy. In the mix is always the 2nd Amendment: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The 2nd Amendment has been interpreted both as a right to individual self-defense and, by some, as a check on government, i.e. a right to use force to overthrow a “tyrannical” government.

TELL YOUR LANDLORD: AS OF JAN. 1, 2013, IT'S THE LAW TO INSTALL A CARBON MONOXIDE ALARM FOR YOU!

January 2, 2013 (San Diego) -- Without carbon monoxide alarms, one neighbor’s faulty appliance in a multi-family dwelling can easily become a tragedy that affects ALL tenants. The California Office of the State Fire Marshal cited a recent study that found nearly nine in 10 California households do NOT have a CO alarm

All multi-family dwelling units, such as apartments, are required to have a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm by January 1, 2013. Landlords are responsible for installation, so for tenants whose units do not have a CO alarm, now is the time to remind your landlord by requesting one.

RENO DISPATCH: WILL CONGRESS THROW VETERANS UNDER THE BUS?

January 2, 2013 (San Diego) – What has sadly been lost this week amid all the chatter about the so-called fiscal cliff is the fact that members of Congress are already threatening to throw our veterans under the bus. And it is nothing short of despicable.

Back in September, I reported for Newsweek/The Daily Beast that an unidentified Senator tried to block disabled veterans and their survivors from getting a cost-of-living adjustment to their benefits. The Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) increase for Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits, which typically passes the House and Senate without opposition, was cleared by Senate Democrats but was unconscionably placed on a “secret hold” by an unidentified Republican senator.

READER'S EDITORIAL: HO, HO, HUMBUG

GUHSD Board Member Jim Kelly led the last 8 years by controlling the Board’s majority; now with a new member, Jim Stieringer, elected, let's review progress of a 12th high school

By Bill Weaver

December 2, 2012 (San Diego's East County)--There is an endless trail of disingenuous acts on behalf the majority on the Grossmont Union High School District (GUHSD) Governing Board; this editorial touches on a few. Let’s reflect on years past. Prop H passed in 2004, authorizing $274 million; the Superintendent and the Board put a 12th new high school in the main summarizing Ballot statement headlining the bond explanation. There was a GUHSD Long Range Facilities Master Plan (LRFMP) dated 2003 that stipulated a 12th high school for "Safety and Overcrowding" reasons.

RENO DISPATCH: WOULD PRESIDENT OBAMA LIKE THE NEW FILM "PROMISED LAND?"

January 2, 2013 (San Diego) – I just watched the poignant new film Promised Land, which will be released nationally on Friday, and as I watched I couldn't help but wonder: Would President Obama like this movie? Is it something he would embrace, or dismiss?

As you may have read, Promised Land, which is written by and stars Matt Damon and John Krasinski, is a cautionary tale about hydraulic fracking, the relatively new and controversial process of injecting water, sand and a variety of chemicals, some of them toxic, deep into the ground to free natural gas trapped in rock.

CONGRESS APPROVES BILL TO AVOID FISCAL CLIFF; SAN DIEGO DELEGATION DIVIDED

By Miriam Raftery

January 2, 2013 (San Diego’s East County ) – By a 257-167 vote late last night, the House of Representatives approved without changes a “fiscal cliff” deal previously passed by the Senate 89-8.

The stock market reaction to ending the uncertainty was positive, rising 235 points or 1.9% on January 1 for a second-straight day of triple digit gains. It’s a deal that reflects compromise on both sides, averting a potential crisis short-term, but deferring major decisions on spending cuts and raising the nation's debt ceiling down the road.

The decision divided  the Republican leadership, as well as the local Congressional delegation. Lame-duck Republican Congressman Brian Bilbray joined with Democrat Susan Davis in voting for the measure, while Republicans Duncan Hunter and Darrell Issa voted against it.  (Bob Filner resigned his seat Dec. 3 to assume his new responsibilities as Mayor, leaving his seat vacant until Juan Vargas is sworn in later this month.)

January 2, 2013 (Lakeside) – A 74-year-old woman and her daughter have been hospitalized for treatment of injuries after a fire at their home at 13265 Lakeview Granada in Lakeside yesterday.  Sheriff’s deputies arrived at 4:26 p.m. to assist firefighters from the Lakeside Fire Department at the fully engulfed structure fire.

“The elderly woman told deputies her daughter had intentionally set the fire. Deputies detained the adult suspect, pending the investigation,” said  Sergeant Curt Goldberg with the San Diego Sheriff.  The mother also told a dispatcher that her daughter set the blaze deliberately.
