November 26, 2011 (San Diego) Updated 3 p.m.—California Highway Patrol reports 60 arrests in San Diego County for driving under the influence (DUI) from 6 p.m. Wednesday evening through 6 a.m. Saturday morning. Two fatalities have occurred thus far over the Thanksgiving weekend locally.

OCCUPYING WALMART: BLACK FRIDAY SHOPPERS GREETED BY FLASH MOBS IN SAN DIEGO

November 26, 2011 (San Diego) – Startled shoppers in two San Diego Walmart stores received a message delivered by 75 Occupy San Diego protesters forming a human microphone. The protesters urged Walmart shoppers to support locally-owned small businesses instead of corporate-owned mass merchandizers.

HOSPICE PATIENT KILLS SELF AFTER SWAT STAND-OFF IN LAKESIDE

November 23, 2011 (Lakeside) – A three hour stand-off with a SWAT team has ended with the suicide of a 75-year-old Lakeside man. The man, a hospice patient, reportedly had leukemia and had been told he had only days to live, a neighbor told 10 news.

GLASS ELEVATORS OPEN AT LA MESA TROLLEY STATION, GIVING COMMUTERS EASY ACCESS TO SHOPPING AND HOSPITAL


November 23, 2011 (La Mesa) – Mayor Art Madrid cut the ribbon this week at the grand opening of twin glass elevators rising from the Grossmont Trolley Station to the street above. Before, commuters and apartment dwellers along the transit line had to climb a steep flight of 77 stairs to access Grossmont Shopping Center or Grossmont Hospital above, an impossible feat for those in wheelchairs.

CLERGY SHARE “OCCU-PIES”


November 23, 2011 (San Diego) -- On the Monday before Thanksgiving, multi-faith leaders from San Diego County held a short service to promote peace and gratitude in support of Occupy San Diego.

Clergy members brought pies to protesters at the Civic Center “to give thanks for all those lifting up the issues of fairness, compassion and equality being shared by this movement,” Rev. David Miller observed.

RAIN BRINGS URBAN RUNOFF TO BEACHES: COUNTY WARNS OF CONTAMINATION


November 20, 2011 (San Diegio)--The County Department of Environmental Health has issued a General Advisory for coastal waters of San Diego County due to recent rainfall. Activities such as swimming, surfing and diving should be avoided in all coastal waters for 72 hours following rain due to elevated bacteria levels. This includes all coastal beaches, Mission Bay and San Diego Bay.

MOTORIST INJURED IN LAKESIDE CRASH DIES IN HOSPITAL

November 19, 2011 (Lakeside) -- Esaw O'Guin, Jr., 27, has died of injuries sustained in a crash that occurred November 17 on southbound Highway 67 near Slaughterhouse Canyon Road in Lakeside. O'Guin, who was wearing a seatbelt, was driving a Toyota Camry when for unknown reasons, he crossed the center line and collided with another vehicle.

SNOW FORECAST FOR MOUNTAINS; RAIN ACROSS COUNTY AS NEW STORM MOVES INTO REGION


November 19, 2011(San Diego’s East County) – A Pacific storm is forecast to bring several inches of snow  on Sunday to East County mountain areas above 5,500 to 6,000 feet. Gusty winds up to 40 mph are also forecast in the mountains, with thunderstorms possible. Countywide, morning showers are expected to intensify in the afternoon and evening.

November 18, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) The National Weather Service advises that a trough of low pressure moving inland will bring strong, gusty west winds of 35-55 mph in San Diego’s mountain and deserts tonight. High winds will make driving difficult especially for high profile vehicles. Blowing dust and sand may also reduce visibility.

November 18, 2011 (El Cajon)--Investigators have determined that an early morning house fire in El Cajon was caused by arson, according to Heartland Fire and Rescue.

At 1:40 a.m., Heartland Fire & Rescue in El Cajon responded to reports of a structure fire and found a single story home at 1180 Naranca Avenue with heavy smoke and fire showing.

SHERIFF’S SEARCH AND RESCUE FORCE FINDS SEVERED ARM FOR INJURED CALTRANS WORKER

November 17, 2011 (Poway) – A quick-thinking emergency room nurse at Pomerado Medical Center in Poway helped reunite a Caltrans worker with his arm, which was severed in a freak accident at 1:45 p.m.  The nurse suggested calling the San Diego Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team to find the missing arm.

November 17, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – All lanes are blocked due to an accident on Highway 67 at Slaughterhouse Canyon. Mercy Air is attempting to land and a rescue is in progress for multiple patients in a crash involved a PT Cruiser, a Toyota, and a third vehicle.

EL CAJON MAN IDENTIFIED AS DRIVER KILLED IN ALPINE AFTER HITTING SEMI-TRUCK


November 17, 2011 (Alpine)—The San Diego Coroner's office has identified Patrick Strobel, 52 of El Cajon as the driver who was killed yesterday in Alpine.

Strobel was driving a Honda Accord when for unknown reasons, he rear-ended a semi-truck on I-8 eastbound just west of Willows Road.

OCCUPY GROWS IN SAN DIEGO: RALLY FOR INFRASTRUCTURE JOBS PLANNED WEDNESDAY

November 16, 2011 (San Diego) --Last night, Occupy San Diego called for an emergency march in support of Occupy Wall Street in New York, after police evicted the  protesters overnight. Today’s San Diego march was attended by two hundred people, who walked down Broadway to Police headquarters on 14th Street, then into the Gaslamp Quarter.

Tomorrow, occupy groups across America are joining together in a National day of Action. Locally,“Occupy the Clairmont Bridge,” is planned at 4 p.m. According to the group’s Facebook page,Wednesday’s rally will draw attention to a need for infrastructure jobs to put people back to work. Barry Willis, a core organizer and Media Committee spokesman at Occupy San Diego, said the new location will make the movement more accessible to East County communities.

MT HELIX AREA TO HAVE WATER SHUT-OFF 10 HOURS ON THURS. NOV. 17 DUE TO PIPELINE REPLACEMENT

 

November 1, 2011 (Mt. Helix) --As part of a larger cast iron pipeline replacement project, Helix Water District crews will replace two 60-year-old valves at Mt. Helix Drive and Vivera Drive and install a new valve at Mt. Helix Drive and Alto Drive on Thursday, November 17.

Much of Mt. Helix is served by a single pipeline. As a result, construction activity will create a 10-hour water shutdown between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 242 customers on 20 streets in the vicinity.

MAN KILLED IN RAMONA ROLLOVER, 2 OTHERS INJURED

Update: The deceased has been identified as Mark Andrew Jones, 52, who resided with his family in Ramona.

November 14, 2011 (Ramona) – A Ramona resident who was not wearing a seatbelt died after being ejected from a vehicle in a rollover accident yesterday afternoon.  Two other men were taken to a hospital with injuries. The driver faces charges for driving under the influence,  ECM News partner 10 News reports.

According to a witness, the driver of the car, a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda, may have been trying to avoid hitting a woman who was unlading her horse from a horse cart.

November 14, 2011 (Poway) – A westbound vehicle struck a pedestrian who was crossing Poway Road just west of Tarascan Drive at 8:55 p.m. last night. According to Sergeant B. Jenkins with the San Diego Sheriff, “The pedestrian was transported to Palomar Hospital with significant injuries.”

November 12, 2011 (San Diego)—Over a hundred women walked from the other side of Third Avenue downtown, pushing wheelbarrow and carrying trash bags filled with supplies such as dry socks. The rain came down hard, soaking them. Many East County women were among the crowd, including a Jamul mother and her son.

They chanted “We are the ninety-nine percent,” and “Banks got bailed out, we got sold out.” The occupiers peeked out from under plastic tarps, or came out from whatever cover they were allowed by San Diego Police, and cheered. To them, it was a surprise. A few faces, filled with emotion, had tears. View a video:

RESCUE IN JACUMBA

November 12, 2011 (Jacumba) - A white truck plunged 50 feet into the Carrizo Gorge off of I-8 at Jacumba.  The accident was reported at 8:18 p.m. According to the California Highway Patrol website, people are trapped inside and a medical helicopter has been requested.

Allows Probation to Fight Drunk Driving with Intensive Supervision of DUI Probationers
 
November 11, 2011 (San Diego) -- The San Diego County Probation Department has the green light to accept a new traffic safety grant for a year-long program aimed at preventing deaths and injuries resulting from driving under the influence (DUI).
