December 13, 2011 (El Cajon) – A motorist who hit the gas instead of the brake crashed into Tyler’s Taste of Texas restaurant yesterday shortly before noon, but fortunately no one was injured.

MISSION TRAILS HIKER DIED OF HEART ATTACK, MEDICAL EXAMINER CONCLUDES

December 13, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – Following an examination, the San Diego Medical Examiner has concluded that Jeffery Martin Andrews, 33, died of sudden cardiac arrest associated with coronary artery atherosclerosis.

Andrews collapsed while hiking in Mission Trails Regional Park on September 7. He was found by a hiker, who asked a jogger to call 911. Santee Fire Department responded to the call and confirmed death without medical intervention.

December 12, 2011 (San Diego’s East County)--The eastern portions of San Diego County have become areas for increased interest in wind energy production. In response, County officials are proposing changes to current regulations that, in effect, will make it easier for wind energy development—including both wind farms with large-scale turbines and smaller scale residential windmills.

GROSSMONT HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT AND GRANDMOTHER KILLED IN LA MESA CRASH

 

 December 12, 2011 (La Mesa) – David Gonzalez, 16, and his grandmother, Celia Torres, 73, have been identified by family members as the victims who perished in a fiery collision Friday on Highway 125 just south of I-8.  Gonzalez was a sophomore at Grossmont High School and hoped to join the military.

COUNTY WARNS OF POSSIBLE BEACH CONTAMINATION FROM STORM RUN-OFF

December 12, 2011 (San Diego)--The Department of Environmental Health has issued a General Advisory for the coastal waters of San Diego County due to recent rainfall. Swimmers, surfers, and other ocean users are warned that the levels of bacteria can rise significantly in ocean and bay waters, especially near storm drains, creeks, rivers, and lagoon outlets that discharge urban runoff.

MAN'S BODY FOUND INSIDE BURNED HOME IN DESCANSO

 

December 11, 2011 (Descanso) – Firefighters have found a body inside a residence in the 24000 block of Los Terrinitos Road, after dousing a fire that engulfed the structure.  According to the San Diego Medical Examiner’s office, the deceased man is believed to be the 53-year-old resident of the home.

HIGHWAY 125 SOUTH CLOSED TODAY FROM 9 AM TO NOON

December 14, 2011 (San Diego's East County) - State Route 125 southbound will be closed today from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

All lanes are closed at I-8, south to Lemon Avenue. In addition, two lanes are closed from Navajo to I-8.  

The closure is for a police investigation of the fatal accident that killed a Grossmont High School student David Gonzalez and his grandmother, Celia Torres last Friday.

SANTEE MOUNTAIN LION SIGHTING PROMPTS BRIEF LOCK-DOWN OF HIGH SCHOOL

December 9, 2011 (Santee) – West Hills High School in Santee was briefly locked down this morning after a caller reporting spotting a mountain lion nearby.  Fish & Wildlife officers, along with Sheriff deputies, searched the area with help from a Sheriff’s helicopter but could not locate the animal.

LEMON GROVE MAN IN CUSTODY FOR DUAL FATALITY ACCIDENT ON HIGHWAY 125

 

December 9, 2011 (La Mesa) updated 9:40 p.m.-- Justin Foulds, 39, of Lemon Grove has been arrested for driving under the influence in relation to a fiery accident that killed a man and woman in La Mesa this evening.

 Editor's note: I was driving home on I-15 the night Cara Knott was killed, passing the isolated exit at nearly the exact time she was murdered.  If Peyer were innocent, why would he refuse a DNA test that could exonerate him?  I find it chilling that a law enforcement officer who so violated the public trust could be set free.  Please post your comments below.

December 8, 2011 (San Diego’s East County)—Craig Peyer, the California Highway Patrol officer convicted in the 1986 strangling murder of 20-year-old motorist Cara Knott, is eligible for parole. The family of Knott, a student at San Diego State University when she was brutally murdered by Peyer, seeks public help to prevent him from being freed.

Update Dec. 8, 2011 --After hearing a proposal yesterday to streamline the regulatory process for developers, Supervisors postponed a decision until Feb. 29, 2012.

Dec. 6, 2011- Local elected planning groups fear that their days are numbered, as the San Diego County Board of Supervisors will hear recommendations from the Red Tape Reduction Task Force on Wednesday.

Recommendations by the task force could greatly diminish community driven input on major developments in East County communities.

December 7, 2011 (San Diego)--The Occupy Foreclosures National Day of Action took place at the Civic Center Plaza yesterday afternoon. The event was led by David Blankstein from Alliance of California for Community Empowerment (ACCE) http://www.calorganize.org/, as well as Occupy San Diego and “Women Occupy of San Diego.” According to Mr. Blankstein “millions have lost their homes, and two million homes are underwater in the state of California.” He also said that ACCE was inspired by the Occupy movement to take action.

COMEDIAN RICK GENE HAS STROKE ON STAGE AT SAN DIEGO DESSERTS

December 7, 2011 (San Diego)--Last night, comedian Rick Gene was on stage at the bistro at San Diego Desserts, making people laugh when suddenly his language was inaudible and he started looking very strange. 911 was called and he was taken to Alvarado Hospital. The emergency room doctor did tests and said he had a mild stroke.

YOUNG MOUNTAIN LIONS SPOTTED NEAR ALPINE HOMES

 
December 6, 2011 (Alpine) – The Alpine Community Network reports that two mountain lion cubs were spotted the night before last in the 3000 block of North Victoria Drive.  The sighting was reported by Bill Randall, who said he spotted the two lions in his driveway two nights ago.

POWER OUTAGE ACROSS EAST COUNTY

December 6, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) –Nearly 3,000 customers are without power this morning in Dulzura, Potrero, Campo, Jamacha, Jamul, Indian Springs, La Presa, Spring Valley, Rancho San Diego, Barrett Lake, and Lyons Valley. According to San Diego Gas & Electric Company, the power outage is due to a suspected problem in the overhead electrical system.

MOUNTAIN LION SIGHTED NEAR POWAY SCHOOLS


December 5, 2011 (Poway) – Two Poway schools, Stone Ranch Elementary and Oak Valley Middle School, were briefly locked down this afternoon following a report of a large mountain lion sighted in a canyon at 4S Ranch Parkway near Dove Creek Road. The big cat was close to a boys and girls club as well as the schools, the Union-Tribune reports.

FATAL ACCIDENT ON I-8 IN DESCANSO

December 5, 2011 (Descanso) -- The Medical Examiner's office has identified Gabrial A. Edwards, 40, as the victim in a fatality accident that occurred late last night in Descanso. Edwards was the driver and sole occupant of a pickup truck which struck the rear of a parked truck tractor semi-trailer on the Japatul Valley Road offramp from westbound I-8.

MAN, 20, KILLED CROSSING SWEETWATER ROAD IN SPRING VALLEY

December 5, 2011 (Spring Valley) -- Dominic Estevan Penney, 20, died of head injuries sustained when he was struck by a black Ford Mustang near Mount Miguel High School. According to the CHP, he was hit while crossing Sweetwater Road at Blossom Lane in Spring Valley at 9:40 p.m. on December 3.

DUI DRIVER SENDS FAMILY OF 4 TO HOSPITAL

December 4, 2011 (San Diego) –The driver of a Land Rover has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after causing a crash that sent a family of four to the hospital. The accident occurred about 10 a.m. on eastbound I-8 near Waring Road.

The Land Rover was traveling 80-90 mph when it struck two vehicles, including a Lexus SUV that spun out and crossed the center divide, then plummeted 120-150 feet down an embankment.

MEDICAL EXAMINER RULES 6-YEAR-OLD RAMONA BOY’S DEATH A HOMICIDE RELATED TO CHILDHOOD ABUSE


December 4, 2011 (Ramona) – A child who died Tuesday at his adoptive parents’ home in Ramona has been found to be a victim of homicide. The Medical Examiner’s office has ruled that 6-year-old Samuel Isaiah Dahlke died from complications of a head injury inflicted by his father at age two months.

MEDICAL EXAMINER IDENTIFIES MAN WHO RAN BORDER CHECKPOINT, DIED IN HIGH-SPEED CRASH


December 4, 2011 (Jamul)—Shawn Andrew Corrigan, 34, ignored orders to stop at a Border Patrol checkpoint in Campo on November 28. He fled the scene at a high rate of speed, traveling westbound on Highway 94, and lost control of the vehicle in Jamul. He collided with two vehicles traveling eastbound.

CRASH INTO JAMUL FEED STORE RULED SUICIDE

 

December 4, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – Alberto Octavio Valenzuela, 49, crashed the Honda he was driving at a high rate of speed into the Jamul Feed Store at 12868 Campo Road in Spring Valley shortly before 4 a.m. on Friday. The Medical Examiner’s office has ruled his death a suicide, noting that Valenzuela suffered from clinical depression.

58 LARGE ANIMALS SEIZED FROM CAMPO RANCH IN NEGLECT INVESTIGATION; 10 DEAD ANIMALS PREVIOUSLY FOUND DUMPED NEARBY

December 4, 2011 (Campo)--The Campo Sheriff’s Station and County Animal Services are investigating reports of animal neglect at a ranch owned by Raymond and Nennette Wyatt in Campo. This morning, authorities seized 58 animals including horses, goats, sheep and cattle from the ranch, located in the 1900 block of Buckman Springs Road this morning.

FIRE DESTROYS HOME AND BARN IN DEHESA

December 4, 2011 (El Cajon ) – A home and barn used for storage at 5237 Dehesa Road in the unincorporated area of El Cajon were destroyed by fire this morning.

Leonard Villareal, spokesman for San Miguel Fire Department, said the November 1st elimination of the fire engine at the Department’s Dehesa station was “not a factor in this case."
