April 30, 2012 (Lemon Grove) -- Lemon Grove Historical Society will screen the award-winning PBS special, "Don't Tread On Me:  Voices from the American Revolution," on the next "History Alive" presentation on May 3 at 7 p.m. in the H. Lee House Cultural Center, 3205 Olive, Lemon Grove.

A SPRING FLING FASHION SHOW APRIL 28

April 27, 2012 (El Cajon) – The Wieghorst Museum Auxillary presents “A Spring Fling Fashion Show” April 28 at the Elks Club, 1400 E. Washington Ave., El Cajon at 11:00 a.m.  The fashions will be from Peggy Harris’ Glamour Girlz with hair and makeup by Marinello School of Beauty.

The event includes a no host bar, boutique, Chinese auction and consulting.  The luncheon will begin at 12:15 p.m.

April 15, 2012 (El Cajon) Join the Water Conservation Garden, the Heritage of the Americas Museum and the Ornamental Horticulture Department at Cuyamaca College on Saturday, April 28 from 9 a.m.to 5 p.m. as they present the 19th annual Spring Garden Festival.  This year’s theme is “Urban Farming” and will include experts on raising urban chickens, beekeeping and vegetable gardening.

EXPERIENCE VINTAGE ALPINE MAY 6

 

April 25, 2012 (Alpine) – Vintage Alpine, a wine experience in the country, will be held on May 6 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Summers Past Farms, 15602 Olde Hwy 80, Flinn Springs.  The event began in 1990 and is now one of the larger events of its kind in the county. The event features numerous wineries, offering tastings of 40 plus wines from a variety of appellations. In addition, many fine San Diego restaurants will provide specialty foods for sampling.

SUPPORT ARTS IN SCHOOLS: JOIN GOLDEN ARTISTRY’S JEWELRY COMPETION AWARDS EVENT MAY 3

 

Finalists announced; winner to receive bejeweled award
 
April 23, 2012 (La Mesa)--Approximately 400 students within the Grossmont Union High School District competed in the fourth annual Golden Artistry Jewelry Design Competition.   
 
This year’s entries were evaluated March 11 by three judges on both the quality of the design and the effectiveness in conveying “flight”, the theme of this year’s competition. Twelve finalists have been selected, but only one will receive the Grand Prize--the design presented to the winner as a piece of jewelry at the awards event on May 3rd at the La Mesa Community Center.  The Grand Prize will be created in precious metals and gems by Master Goldsmith Terry Whyte of Golden Artistry in downtown La Mesa.

EAST COUNTY ARTISTS FEATURED AT “ARTWALK” FESTIVAL APRIL 28 IN LITTLE ITALY

April 20, 2012 (San Diego) -- San Diego’s original fine art festival, Mission Federal ArtWalk is back for its 28th year. Featuring artists who live in the East County area as well as San Diego, the event will be held on Saturday and Sunday , April 28 and 29, when 17 blocks of Little Italy will be transformed for this free festival. ArtWalk offers a unique opportunity for members of the public to engage directly with over 350 artists who will be there to display their original works for exhibit and sale. The art on display will include a wide range of paintings, sculpture, mosaics, glasswork and photography.

Viewers will get a chance to see many amazing sights, which they wouldn’t normally see without the trained eye.

April 16, 2012 (El Cajon) -- The Downtown El Cajon Promenade District has announced the 2012 schedule for the Cajon Classic Cruise and Concerts on the Promenade.

To kick off the festivities on April 25, Opening Night, there will be a vintage aircraft flyover by San Diego’s Air Group One, based at Gillespie Field. The band Breez’n will be performing and there will be a super slide and face painting for kids.

YEE-HAW! 48TH ANNUAL LAKESIDE RODEO APRIL 20-22

April 16, 2012 (Lakeside) – The 48th Annual Lakeside Rodeo will take place at the Lakeside Rodeo Grounds. The annual event has been a tradition since the first rodeo was held back in 1920.  It encompasses a series of events April 20-22 that celebrate the community’s Wild West heritage.

 

Each day’s rodeo performances include seven events: saddle bronco riding, tie down roping, team roping, steer wrestling, bull riding, and barrel racing. Other events, including Saturday’s Western Days Parade sponsored by the Lakeside Chamber of Commerce, are also slated.

GROSSMONT COLLEGE INKS WORLD RECORD AT 50TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

 
April 15, 2012 (El Cajon)--Almost 1,800 people – in person and online – signed a giant birthday card for Grossmont College on Saturday, setting what appears to be a new world record.
 
The feat was achieved Saturday at Grossmont College’s 50th Anniversary Open House, a two-day free public celebration. Crowds lined up at Griffin Center to sign the 4 feet-by-4 feet card between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. to help beat the previous record of 1,468 people signing a card during a one-day event. The final tally: 1,797 signatures, including 174 well-wishers who submitted their greetings on Grossmont College’s Facebook page.

April 12, 2012 (El Cajon) – On a day Grossmont College is celebrating its 50th anniversary with an open house full of activities for the public, the campus is also marking a new beginning with the dedication of the Student and Administrative Services Building and Griffin Center.  
 
A dedication ceremony, preceded by a flyover of vintage planes from Gillespie Field, is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 14, on the Main Quad of the El Cajon campus.

NEW EXHIBIT: BEING A LA MESA CHILD 100 YEARS AGO

April 7, 2012 (La Mesa) – The La Mesa Historical Society has opened a new exhibit at its McKinney House Museum at 8369 University Avenue, La Mesa.  It’s featuring a new room display showcasing the history of old time toys and games from tiddlywinks to spinning tops, tin windup toys, kaleidoscope, checkers, jacks and many more to illustrate a child’s play time long ago.  All of the items come from the collections of the Society and are displayed in a classroom setting with old photos of students from Allison School and La Mesa Grammar School between 1910 and 1929.

March 30, 2012 (La Mesa) – The 13th Annual Spring Harp Fest will be held at Harry Griffen Park, 9550 Milden Street, La Mesa on April 7 from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Featured performers include Jon Gindick, Harmonica John with the Bayou Brothers and many more.
