Babies Are at Higher Risk For Complications from Whooping Cough

December 5, 2010 (San Diego)00The pertussis epidemic has resulted in 41 hospitalizations, most of them infants, San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced on December 1st. . The total number of whooping cough cases jumped to 960, including two infants who died.

December 3, 2010 (San Diego’s East County) – The tragic death of Santee resident Bryson Lukacik points up the importance of knowing the danger signs following a head injury--and when to get treatment. 

 

Lukacik suffered a head injury while snowboarding but didn’t tell family members at first. He became disoriented and had a lump on his head before disappearing from a cabin in Big Bear where he and his family were vacationing. His body was found in the snow this morning.
 

If you or someone you know suffers a head injury, here are guidelines on what to watch for—and when to seek medical help.

November 6, 2010 (Washington D.C.)--The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Britax Child Safety Inc., has announced a voluntary recall of Chaperone infant car seat, made in China. About 23,000 were sold at  retailers nationwide from June 2009 to October 2010 for about $230. This product was also recalled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

RABID FOX FOUND IN JAMUL

County urges public to have dogs and cats vaccinated; low-cost rabies shots offered at 3 County animal shelters

 

November 5, 2010 (Jamul) -- Rabies has been confirmed in a sick, adult grey fox which was found in a remote area of Jamul, officials announced today, adding that pet owners should ensure their animals’ rabies vaccinations are up-to-date.

 

There was no known human or domestic animal exposure to the sick fox. The last fox diagnosed with rabies was found in the Campo area in June 2000. In that case, three domestic dogs were exposed.

October 22, 2010 (San Diego) -- A  six-week-old infant, born prematurely, died last week after being diagnosed with pertussis at Rady Children’s Hospital – San Diego, according to County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) officials today. This is the second death of an infant from whooping cough in San Diego County.

September 24, 2010 (Washington, DC) –Several important consumer protection features of health reform went into effect yesterday, six months after the Affordable Care Act (also know as the Patient's Bill of Rights) was signed into law. While even supporters contend the bill is no panacea, it does contain some key reforms that may affect you and your family.

COUNCIL TO CONSIDER MEDICAL MARIJUANA DISPENSARY RULES TODAY

September 13, 2010 (San Diego) – San Diego’s City Council will consider an ordinance today that would crack down on 125 medical marijuana dispensaries within city limits.

 

The proposed ordinance is modeled after a measure approved by the San Diego Board of Supervisors in June for the County’s unincorporated areas. That ordinance limits dispensaries to industrial areas and requires that they be at least 1,000 feet away from schools, playgrounds, religious institutions and homes.
