POLICE DEPARTMENTS STRIVE TO HELP OFFICERS COMBAT STRESS

By Elena Pena

October 26, 2011 (San Diego’s East County)--When we think about police officers, recent incidents such as shootings and high-speed pursuits come to mind. We might also think of their day-to-day duties such as patrolling, giving out tickets and responding to emergency calls. Rarely does the public actually take into account the high levels of stress and resulting health risks associated with being a police officer.

POLITICAL WRANGLING: WITH THE WAR OVER, NOW CAN WE CREATE JOBS?

By Buck Shott

October 25, 2011 (San Diego’s East County)—While the President announced the end of the Iraq War (bringing all troops home for the holidays—permanently) and rolled out a jobs bill to put Americans back to work, Republican candidates announced plans to cut off student aid, deregulate Wall Street robber barons, and jack up taxes on the poor and middle class. No, I’m not making this up.

So why wasn’t this headline news at the San Diego Union-Tribune’s online edition?

DEERHORN VALLEY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION HOLDS FIRST ANNUAL TRUNK OR TREAT OCT. 30

By Mayan Avitable

October 25, 2011 (Deerhorn Valley)--The Deerhorn Valley Community Association will hold its first annual Trunk or Treat on Sunday, October 30th from 4-7 p.m. at the site of the  Old Deerhorn Lodge  at Elena Lane and Deerhorn Valley Road. (Look for signs.)

Because homes in rural areas are far apart for kids to go trick-or-treating,  the Association’s Trunk or Treat event will allow costumed kids to go from car to car instead of house to house. Community members will park in lined-out spaces so the kids can fill their Halloween bags from the trunk of each car.
