September 13, 2016 (San Diego) - After recording braces in each of his last two matches, San Diego State forward Jeroen Meefout (Houten, Netherlands) was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week, the website announced Tuesday. The Aztec forward was the lone Pac-12 representative on the prestigious 11-player squad.

September 13, 2016 (San Diego’s East County) -- Over three years after the federal government found California in noncompliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act, 95 public water systems serving more than 55,000 people across the state are still providing water with illegal levels of arsenic, according to a new report by the Environmental Integrity Project.

September 13, 2016 (San Diego’s East County) -- The Northern Mockingbird is the only mockingbird commonly found in North America. This bird is mainly a permanent resident, but northern birds may move south during harsh weather.  While most other North American birds become silent or migrate in the fall, mockingbirds keep on singing in hopes of landing a mate for next spring.  Males with a good repertoire of song can be a good catch.

September 13, 2016 (Newport Beach, Calif.) - San Diego State senior linebacker Calvin Munson has been named the Lott IMPACT Player of the Week, The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation announced today. In recognition of Munson’s performance, the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation will make a $1,000 donation to the general scholarship fund at SDSU.

AB 1066 will establish an 8-hour workday and 40-hour workweek standard for California farm workers

September 12, 2016 (Sacramento) -- Legislation authored by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego) to establish overtime standards for farm workers in line with other Californians was signed into law today by the Governor.

September 12, 2016 (San Diego's East County) - Last month was the warmest month of August in 136 years that NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies has kept land and sea records.  The last time it was this hot, back in 1880, James Garfield was president, France was building the Statue of Liberty, Mark Twain was busy writing The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the first outdoor electric light bulb was installed in a street lamp and Science magazine started publication with funding from inventor Thomas Edison.

The 1880s brought a second industrial revolution fueled by growth in railroads, rise of the steel industry, factories and the first skyscrapers, invention of the telephone and the internal combustion engine to power automobiles—all setting the stage for pumping increasing amounts of carbon industry the atmosphere.

Update Sept. 14,2016:  Today we received this upate from  Ms. Pursglove:  "Hi all, The big pile of trash (mattress, box springs, TV, trash bags) are gone. There are still a few pieces of wood and a lot of trash, long weeds/grasses so I hope more will be done to clean up the area.  At least that big eyesore is gone.  Thanks so much for your help!"

September 12, 2016 (Flinn Springs) – After Flinn Springs resident Shaun Pursglove wrote to notify us of repeated illegal dumping on Chimney Rock Lane of items including a mattress, spa tub and trash bags, we contacted Supervisor Jacob’s office.  Within 24 hours, we received the following response from a Jacob staffer:

“I’m told that county Public Works will be reaching out to Shaun directly and will make sure the trash and debris are property disposed. I’m also told it plans to add that location to the list of sites it regularly inspects. Thanks for alerting us about this.”

Sept. 12, 2016 (East County) – Fitness instructor, dancer and choreographer Dionne Thomas has been selected as keynote speaker at the San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce’s 14th annual Women In Leadership Luncheon (WILL). Awards will be presented Friday, Sept. 16 at the Town and Country Resort Hotel in Mission Valley.

September 12, 2016 (Colorado Springs, Colo.) - San Diego State football players Donnel Pumphrey (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Rashaad Penny (Norwalk, Calif.) have each been named Mountain West Players of the Week, the league announced today. Pumphrey was chosen as the MW Offensive Player of the Week, while Penny garnered MW Special Teams Player-of-the-Week accolades.

September 12, 2016 (San Diego) — If you have a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phone, Samsung has a message for you:  stop using your phone and immediately bring it into the store where you bought it for a free replacement. The company has recalled 2.5 million of its new Note 7 phones due to dozens of fires caused by defective batteries.

September 11, 2016 (San Diego) - The No. 13/9 San Diego State men’s soccer team posted its fourth shutout in a row on Sunday with a 2-0 conquest of Memphis in the Courtyard Marriott San Diego Central Tournament at SDSU Sports Deck. With the victory, the Aztecs claimed the team championship at their weekend event, improving to 4-0-1 on the season, while the Tigers slip to 3-3 overall.

September 11, 2016 (New York) – Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton left a 911 memorial event in New York early and stumbled as she was helped into her limousine.  Her campaign initially reported she suffered heat exhaustion but later stated that she has been diagnosed with pneumonia. 

Her doctor has indicated she is being treated with antibiotics and is recovering, though he has advised curtailing her campaign schedule for a few days. Clinton was later filmed leaving her daughter,Chelsea's home,walking unassisted and waving.
