“The snake was moved but kept coming back, just like our people.  We will continue to keep coming back.” – Preston Arrowweed, Quechan elder. He believes unusual animal visitations at site are signs from Indian spirits, asking his people to help.

June 7, 2012 (Ocotillo)—Neither blistering heat nor blowing dust dissuaded Native Americans from at least four tribes from taking part in a five-day occupation in Ocotillo last week.

They came to be with the spirits of their ancestors.  They also aim to show that desert devastation occurring with construction of the Ocotillo Express wind facility is wrong and must be stopped.

SURPRISES EMERGE FROM FIRST “TOP TWO” PRIMARY ELECTIONS IN CALIFORNIA

By Miriam Raftery

June 7, 2012 (Sacramento) – The state’s new top-two primary election is shaking up California politics. In November, voters in 25 of the state’s 120 legislative districts will not have a choice between Republicans and Democrats on their ballots.

The advantage appears to belong to Democrats, since in 11 districts, the run-off will be between two Democratic candidates. Another five districts have two Republicans squaring off in November. In addition, two districts have decline-to-state-party candidates in the run-off, according to the Secretary of State’s website.

TOBACCO INDUSTRY SNUFFS OUT CIGARETTE TAX INITIATIVE, BUT TERM LIMITS MEASURE PASSES

By Miriam Raftery

June 7, 2012 (San Diego)—Proposition 29 sought to add a $1 tax onto a pack of cigarettes and other tobacco products in order to fund cancer research.  The measure appears headed for defeat, with the count currently showing 50.8% voting no.  (Some counties have not yet certified final results, which is not required until July 6.)

The tobacco industry spent a reported $65 million to defeat the measure--and appears to have got its money's worth with a spate of ads labeled as distortion by prominent newspapers statewide.

June 6, 2012 (San Diego) – Two feisty and fiercely competitive politicians, polar opposites in the partisan divide, will square off in the San Diego Mayoral run-off race in November.

Carl Demaio, a conservative Republican and former councilmember, in his victory speech at the U.S. Grant Hotel , said that “Citizens have shifted the city into drive and put their foot on the gas.”  He pledged to “finish the job of fiscal reform”  by implementing Propositions A and B, as well as fixing “roads that are falling apart.”

Congressman Bob Filner, a liberal Democrat and former Deputy Mayor of San Diego, faulted DeMaio for focusing on “a pothole somewhere” while lacking a positive message for voters.  “I want to talk about a vision of the future of what can be a really great city,” Filner told media at Election Central.
