February 26, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) -- Budget woes. School funding cuts. American kids left behind. You’ve read the headlines, endured the political posturing, heard – and shared - the concerns of parents and teachers. The litany of protests is long – and worrisome. Is there good news anywhere?
Yes! San Diego and Imperial County students, bucking the downward trend, are known for their scientific achievements. Do these kids have an edge, have something special going for them? Absolutely.
Passengers on the flight are urged to call their doctor before seeking treatment for symptoms so that infection-control can be implemented to prevent spread of the contagious disease.
February 26, 2011 (2 p.m.) - New road hazards have been announced since our morning update including SIGALERTS and closures of several major highways and freeways due to hazards ranging from boulders to flooding to power lines collapsed by heavy snow.

February 25, 2011 (La Mesa)--The “La Mesa Kids Walk & Roll to School ” Safe Routes program is inviting the public to attend Walkability Workshops being held at local schools.
February 25, 2011 (San Carlos) – A high-speed vehicle pursuit by San Diego Police ended in a single-vehicle collision at Jackson Drive and Mission Gorge this morning around 2:30 a.m. The driver, a 34-year-old San Diego man, was injured in the crash.
Funds to cover diagnostic tests and medical supplies for patients without insurance
The Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD) board of directors has voted to approve a $150,000 grant to Volunteers in Medicine – San Diego, Inc. (VIM), a non-profit that brings together medical professionals and patients who don’t have health insurance.
The money will pay for diagnostic lab fees and medical supplies, as well as X-ray and ultrasound tests, for uninsured East County residents who are treated for free at the VIM El Cajon medical clinic at 1457 East Madison Ave.

February 25, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – A cold storm will bring heavy snowfall late tonight through Saturday evening.
Snow is forecast to drop to unusually low elevations of 2,000 feet in East County’s mountains and upper deserts. Interstate 8 east of Alpine, Cuyamaca, Boulevard, Descanso Ranchita, and Pine Valley are among the areas where snow is predicted, as well as Palomar and Laguna mountains, where more than a foot of snow fell last weekend.
February 25, 2011 (Crest) – The Sheriff’s office has been going door-to-door to notify residents in Crest about a prowler who has been peeking in windows of homes in the vicinity of Crest Drive and Highline Trail. Paula Dickenson, crime prevention specialist at the Sheriff’s substation in Alpine, said two incidents occurred involving a Hispanic man, 20-25 years old, 5 feet 7 to 5 feet 8 inches tall, wearing a red hooded sweat shirt.

February 25, 2011 (Lakeside) – An unidentified man around 25-35 years old was found dead beneath a large wood pallet at 10303 Channel Road in Lakeside at 8:30 p.m. last night. His body was found by apparent transients at a drilling site, the San Diego Medical Examiner’s office reports.
February 25, 2011 (El Cajon)--The St. Clair Gallery in El Cajon has announced its 26th Invitational Art Exhibit, which will run from February 28 through April 1, 2011. The artists’ reception will be held on Wednesday, March 30 from 5 to 8pm. Admission is free.

February 24, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – The California Supreme Court has denied without comment an appeal filed by Utility Consumers Action Network (UCAN), which sought to stop the Sunrise Powerlink project on the basis that it violated the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
February 24, 2011 (El Cajon) –Should El Cajon renew its Community Development Corporation (CDC) and Planned Business Improvement District (PBID)? Downtown merchants will be asked that question starting in mid-March, when a petition for renewal will be circulated to bring the issue up for a vote.
But a Blue Ribbon Commission chaired by developer Daryl Priest issued a report January 31st calling for the CDC/PBID to be suspected because of “ineffective management” by the CDC. The CDC in turn has issued a point-by-point rebuttal while mobilizing community support.
February 25, 2011 (La Mesa) -- Golden Artistry Jewelry Design of La Mesa is hosting their third annual jewelry design contest for high school students in the Grossmont Union High School District. The theme this year is water.
The competition is the creation of jeweler Terry Whyte, who hopes to inspire artistic students to consider careers in jewelry making, the same way he was inspired when he saw one of his professors solder a ring.

This week has been one of those eye-opening weeks for my family. We had one of our Leash Your Fitness family members die VERY unexpectedly in a freak accident and then my sister was in a car accident–all in the same day! It made me think–what would happen to my dog if I died?
There are so many questions to answer and we wanted you to think about this too, since NOBODY can say what is going to happen to us each day. You may think that your sibling or friend would take care of your dog--but do they know all about your dog? These are a few things that are important:
February 23, 2011 (Escondido) – Jean and Scott Adam, a Southern California couple, have been killed by Somali pirates after being taken hostage last week off the coast of Oman. Phyllis Mackay and Robert Riggle of Seattle also died during an exchange of gunfire between their captors and the U.S. Navy.
“Our loved ones were tragically taken from us and our hearts are broken,” said a statement issued by the Sem family of Escondido, relatives of Scott Adam.

February 23, 2011 (San Diego) – San Diego Police seeks public help to locate Frank Waines, 73 . “According to his family, he is diabetic and becomes disoriented quite easily,” said Lt. Andra Brown. Waines may also need medical treatment. He was last seen on February 21st at 6:30 p.m. at 5900 Flipper Street in east San Diego. Waines was driving a black 2009 Ford Edge with CA license 4001EDP.

February 23, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) -- San Miguel Fire District will add 20 Automatic External Defibrillators to its life-saving arsenal.
“The addition of the AED’s will provide critical care in a much more expedient manner,” said Leonard Villareal, spokesperson for the District. “Eighty percent San Miguel’s calls are medical aids. This additional equipment will be vital in helping to make such incidents more survivable for all members of the community.”
