November 4, 2010 (El Cajon) – Henri Migala, former executive dean at Cuyamaca College, has accepted a new post. Migala has relocated at Grossmont College, where he is working under the chancellor to manage grants for the department.

2 Democrats won “open” primary to square off Nov. 3:  Teacher/legislator vs. retired superintendent

November 1, 2010 (San Diego) – When Republican Abel Maldonado held up the state budget and demanded fellow legislators approve an “open” primary ballot initiative as a condition for his vote, the GOP thought it would result in more Republicans winning high office in California, a heavily Democratic state.

But the new rule, which declared the top two vote-getters in June's primary winners regardless of parties, resulted in two Democrats, Tom Torlakson and Larry Aceves, squaring off in the state superintendent’s race (though Aceves has since changed his party registration to independent).

October 12, 2010 (El Cajon) – Kerry Kilber has been named dean of learning resources and technology at Grossmont College. Kilber comes to the district from the University of San Diego, where she served as the director of a web-based master’s degree program in supply chain management in the college of business administration.

October 4, 2010 (San Diego’s East County) – Leaders at the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District today praised Governor Schwarzenegger for signing SB 1440, the Student Transfer Achievement Reform Act (STAR).

“The legislation recognizes the need to streamline the transfer process and provides an improved, more efficient pathway between California Community Colleges and California State Universities,” Chancellor Cindy Miles said.

October 1, 2010 (Sacramento) -- Legislation by Assemblymember Marty Block (AD-78)  to restore special education funding to cash-strapped school districts was signed by Governor Schwarzenegger. AB 184 prevents the California Department of Education from requiring school districts to repay the state for Special Disabilities Adjustment funds that districts received in the prior fiscal year and already spent to enrich the classroom experience for special-needs children.

“AB 184 is a life saver for some of our neediest students across the state and provides immediate assistance to school districts already struggling to make ends meet and maintain high quality instruction,” said Block.

September 22, 2010 (Santee) – “Education is the foundation of our future. I urge you to get as much of it as you can,” Barona tribal chairman Edwin “Thorpe” Romero told schoolchildren at Carlton Hills Elementary School in Santee this morning. “My tribe, the Barona band of Mission Indians, and I are thankful that we are able to support your school.”

Romero presented principal Terry Heck with a check for $5,000 – surpassing the one million dollar mark for the Barona Education Grant program statewide.
