July 19, 2012 (San Diego’s East County) – Ford Motor Company today announced a voluntary recall of 2013 model year Ford Escape vehicles equipped with the 1.6-liter engine built through July 11, 2012. Ford estimates that there have been approximately 11,500 of these vehicles distributed for sale in North America, with most in the U.S.
Ford is voluntarily recalling the vehicles to replace an engine compartment fuel line, which could split and leak fuel, potentially resulting in an underhood fire. Three fires have occurred, including two by Ford employees testing vehicles. No injuries have been reported.

July 19, 2012 (San Diego)--The San Diego Planning Commission voted not to green light the East Elliot Community Plan Amendment that would have allowed Cogentrix Energy LLC to go forward with the Quail Brush natural gas-fired power plant near Mission Trails Regional Park.
The City Council now has the opportunity to weigh in on the controversial project, which has generated near-unanimous community opposition.

New Freeway Will Ease Flow of Commerce from/to Otay Mesa Border Crossing
July 19, 2012 (Otay Mesa) -- State Route 905, a newly-built highway designed to accommodate the growing volume of trucks carrying goods between the United States and Mexico, will open to motorists July 30. A grand opening celebration was held today on the freeway that connects the Otay Mesa Port of Entry – the only commercial crossing between San Diego and Tijuana – to the rest of the highway system.

July 18, 2012 (San Diego) – San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) and the U.S. Forest Service have collaborated to preserve and protect 266 acres of sensitive habitat immediately adjacent to Cedar Creek Falls in the San Diego River watershed. The land is now National Forest System land donated by SDG&E.
This critical watershed habitat is home to 26 sensitive or endangered wildlife species and twice as many sensitive to endangered plant species. Species include the endangered arroyo toad which relies on sandy streambeds and chaparral as well as the Least Bell’s vireo, a migratory songbird that nests in the poison oak and other brush that grows in the San Diego River watershed.

July 15, 2012 (San Diego) -- Ridership aboard Metropolitan Transit System’s bus network set a new ridership record for the year ending June 30, 2012. There were 55.5 million passenger trips taken on bus during the year, which was 5.2% higher than the previous fiscal year and more than 800,000 more passenger trips taken in fiscal year 2009, which was when the previous bus ridership record was set.

July 14, 2012 (San Diego) - Save Our Heritage Organization will legally challenge the San Diego City Council's July 9 approval of a proposal that SOHO says would irreparably damage Balboa Park and could jeopardize its status as a National Historic Landmark District. The lawsuit will be based on the City's violations of the San Diego Municipal Code, the 1870 Trust Dedication of the Park as "free" in perpetuity, and the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) in approving the plan.

July 13, 2012 (Spring Valley) -- San Miguel Firefighters responded to a fully involved mobile home fire located in the 10700 block of Jamacha Blvd. Units were dispatched at 8:45 a.m. Thursday and even though the first unit was on scene in 6 minutes, the double wide mobile home could not be saved. In addition to the home, two vehicles were destroyed and another vehicle damaged.

Excessive heat warning in effect; Sheriff issues safety tips for hikers
July 11, 2012 (San Diego’s East County) – The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for San Diego County’s desert areas, cautioning that conditions “could be deadly” for unprepared campers or hikers.
That message comes too late for Lynn Thu Tran, 19, of Escondido.She was found unconscious with signs of heat stroke on the Julian side of Cedar Creek Falls at 5:30 p.m. on July 9. She was airlifted to Palomar Hospital but did not survive. According to the Medical Examiner, she died of hypethermia, conditions related to a heat stroke.
