CALIFORNIA ENERGY COMMISSION RECOMMENDS LICENSING PIO PICO ENERGY CENTER IN OTAY

 
August 9, 2012 (Otay)--A California Energy Commission siting committee is recommending the approval of the proposed Pio Pico Energy Center.  In the presiding member's proposed decision (PMPD) released today, the committee said the 300-megawatt (MW) project, as mitigated, will have no significant impacts on the environment and complies with all applicable laws, ordinances, regulations, and standards (LORS).

TWO RENOVATED BUILDINGS AT GROSSMONT COLLEGE RECEIVE LEED GREEN CERTIFICATION

 
August 4, 2012 (El Cajon) -- Grossmont College’s two newest renovated buildings have received LEED certification from the United States Green Building Council, indicating that the buildings were designed, built and are operating using green strategies that incorporate energy and water efficiency and sustainable building materials.
 
The El Cajon college’s Student Services and Administration Building was recognized with a gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification while the college’s student center, the Griffin Center, earned a silver LEED certification. This is the first time that a building on the Grossmont or Cuyamaca campuses has achieved LEED certification.

July 11, 2012 (San Diego County) -- Heat waves and power outages have been plaguing the nation in recent weeks and temperatures are expected to rise higher than usual in San Diego County within the next few days.
 
“In these extreme weather conditions, it’s important for people to be aware of how much power they are using because the high demand for energy and high temperatures go hand-and-hand,” said Dave Weil, director of building commissioning and sustainability at the University of California, San Diego. “At UC San Diego, saving energy is a top priority all year-round. The university generates about 90 percent of its annual electricity demand.”

GROSSMONT HEALTHCARE DISTRICT BOARD APPROVES ENERGY-SAVING COGENERATION EQUIPMENT AT GROSSMONT HOSPITAL

 July 8, 2012 La Mesa) -- The Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD) board of directors on Friday, June 29, 2012, unanimously approved plans to greatly improve energy efficiency and reliability at Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa.
 
The GHD board approved financing and a purchase agreement that will replace decades-old equipment with new, state-of-the-art cogeneration energy equipment at the regional medical facility. Estimated to cost $18 million to install, the hospital’s cogeneration project is projected to save millions of dollars in energy costs and provide a reliable source for up to 95 percent of the hospital’s electricity needs, GHD officials said.

FEDERAL AGENCIES SUED OVER FAILURE TO DISCLOSE DATA ON WILDLIFE DEATHS FROM WIND TURBINES, CORRESPONDENCE WITH WIND INDUSTRY

 
July 1, 2012 (Washington, D.C.)—Federal wildlife agencies are suppressing information about wind energy projects’ negative impacts on America’s wildlife, claims a lawsuit filed by the nonprofit American Bird Conservancy (ABC) June 26 in Washington D.C. District Court.
 
"It’s ridiculous that Americans have to sue in order to find out what their government is saying to wind companies about our wildlife—a public trust,” said Kelly Fuller, Wind Campaign Coordinator for ABC. “ABC is concerned that many of these projects have the potential to take a devastating toll on songbirds, majestic eagles, and threatened and endangered species,” she added.

June 29, 2012  -- Clean Air Ambassadors are everyday folks from across the U.S. who have committed to speaking up for everyone’s right to breathe clean, healthy air. The effort is part of the “50 States United for Healthy Air” campaign, a joint endeavor of Earthjustice, the American Nurses Association, the Hip Hop Caucus, the National Council of Churches and Physicians for Social Responsibility. In the spring of 2011 these Ambassadors—people from all 50 states and every walk of life—convened in Washington, D.C. to ask members of Congress, leaders at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and high-ranking officials in the Obama administration for stronger protections against air pollution.

CA ENERGY COMMISSION STAFF RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF GAS POWER PLANT IN OTAY

 

May 28, 2012 (Otay) - The California Energy Commission staff yesterday released its final analysis recommending the licensing of the proposed Pio Pico Energy Center.


In the final staff assessment (FSA), Commission staff concluded that with the implementation of staff's recommended mitigation measures described in the conditions of certification, the proposed 300-megawatt peaker power plant would comply with all applicable laws, ordinances, regulations, and standards (LORS).

GROUNDBREAKING LAW MAKES VERMONT A NATIONAL LEADER IN RECOGNIZING TRUE VALUE OF CLEAN LOCAL ENERGY

 

Vermont’s latest energy statute expands its statewide Clean Local Energy Accessible Now (CLEAN) Program and removes program cap for projects with locational benefits to the power grid.

May 26, 2012 (Montpelier, Vermont)– On May 18, Vermont’s Governor Shumlin signed into law the 2012 Energy Bill, which contains a groundbreaking acknowledgment of the locational benefits of distributed generation and more than doubles the amount clean local energy that will be brought online through the state’s CLEAN program. Similar programs could well be applied in places such as San Diego to encourage locally-generated rooftop solar and other local power as alternatives to massive industrial-scale energy projects and high-voltage transmission lines running long distances.

A field hockey athlete  in college and outdoor enthusiast who led hikes through San Diego’s backcountry, she became our region’s Sierra Club President and sued to enforce environmental laws.  As an educator, she created successful job training programs. In Sacramento, she chaired  powerful committees and pushed through landmark legislation that she authored--including AB 32, California’s major measure to combat global warming and  SB 1, the million solar roofs initiative.  President Bill Clinton appointed her to co-chair a committee on water quality improvements for 10 U.S.-Mexico border states. Scrappy and determined,  she’s earned her reputation as a fighter with a winning  record.

He is running against Denise Moreno Ducheny and Juan Vargas on the Democratic side. Why is he running? He was inspired by the Occupy Wall Street movement, and knew that the next step was to step to the plate and run for office.

April 9, 2012 (San Diego’s East County)--Driving through the southwestern deserts, I’ve long been impressed by the ocotillo, a cactus-like tree with straight branches angling upwards to the sun, ablaze with red blooms. This thorny desert tree is an apt metaphor for the ways different people view energy issues-- especially proposed industrial solar and wind power projects in remote wilderness areas. Like the ocotillo, these programs and policies have a wide array of angles from which to be viewed.

San Diego Utility Recognized for GHG Reductions and Energy Efficiency
March 4, 2012 (San Diego) --  San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) was nationally recognized last week with the Organizational Leadership Award at the inaugural Climate Leadership Awards in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The Climate Leadership Awards recognize organizations that go beyond business as usual in the management and reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and are presented by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Association of Climate Change Officers (ACCO), the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES) (formerly the Pew Center on Global Climate Change), and The Climate Registry (TCR).

Assembly Candidate says accelerating production of San Diego-made biofuels will ease pain at the pump and put hundreds back to work
 
March 2, 2012 (San Diego) – As oil prices hit a nine-month high this week, Dr. Shirley Weber, candidate for Assembly in San Diego’s southeastern 79th district, said that the ingenuity of San Diegans could have a hand in resolving the crisis.
 
“San Diego is home to groundbreaking research on biofuels, especially those developed from algae,” Dr. Weber said. “We need to accelerate the production being done here so that next time oil prices spike or a foreign regime tries to hold our economy hostage, we are in control of our own energy future. Accelerated biofuel production would not only ease pain at the pump, it would put hundreds of San Diegans back to work in good paying jobs in a growing sector.”

SAN DIEGO SOLAR ENERGY SYMPOSIUM MARCH 6

 
February 28, 2012 (San Diego)-- San Diego leads the nation in rooftop and on-site solar installations.  According to a recent report from e Environment California Research & Policy Center, over 4,500 installations and 37 MW peak capacity for the city--15,700 installations—have been made within San Diego Gas & Electric’s service territory.  Now the Solar Electric Power Association (SEPA), CleanTECH San Diego and San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) are offering a solar energy symposium on March 6 at the University of San Diego to discuss the future of solar energy in the region.
