SDSU TO REVIEW POLICE TRAFFIC STOP DATA

May 6, 2015 (San Diego) -- San Diego State’s School of Public Affairs will analyze existing traffic stop data gathered and provided by the San Diego Police Department for 2014 in an effort to understand the relationship between race, age, and gender on the likelihood and outcome of being subject to a traffic stop. The research project is the first of its kind to include interviews with stakeholders, members of the community, and members of the police force.

Aaron Bruce,  a professor at San Diego State University, was the Master of Ceremonies. The theme this year was Honoring Communities Woven Together by Hope and Resilience.

SDSU FRAT SHUT DOWN OVER HARASSMENT AND HAZING COMPLAINTS

December 18,2014 (San Diego) – The Delta Sigma Phi fraternity at San Diego State University has been shut down for disciplinary action and will remain closed until at least fall of 2016. Additionally, individuals involved in the harassment policy violation will be subject to a Title IX policy investigation and a student code of conduct policy violation investigation.

San Diego State University’s Division of Student Affairs has announced the disciplinary action due to consistent pattern of policy violations including harassment of  women participating in a Take Back the Night March on Friday, November 21st as well as serious hazing and alcohol misconduct issues.

BROADWAY STAR TO PERFORM IN LES MISERABLES AT SDSU DEC. 4-7

 

December 1, 2014 (San Diego) – San Diego State University is producing an epic-scale concert version of Les Miserables, the classic tale of love and redemption set amid revolutionary times in 19th century France.  The show stars Broadway veteran Ivan Rutherford as hero Jean Valjean, along with a cast of musical theater graduate students, members of the SDSU Symphony Orchestra, the SDSU Chamber and Concert Choirs, as well as “rock-concert quality lighting and projections,” according to the SDSU news center.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES SUSPENDED AT FRATERNITES ON SDSU FOLLOWING SEXUAL ASSAULTS

November 25, 2014 (San Diego) -- Today, San Diego State University has issued a statement indicating that fraternities  on campus are suspending all activities indefinitely due to recent sexual assaults on campus, including a rape at a frat house over the weekend--the seventh sexual assault on campus since the fall semester began.  Leaders of the Greek groups on campus pledged that they will “immediately take proactive steps toward addressing this extremely serious issue and the Greek community's role in it."

ATTEMPTED KIDNAPPING REPORTED AT SDSU

November 23, 2014 (San Diego)—San Diego State University has issued a safety alert for students after a report of an attempted kidnapping shortly after midnight.

An SDSU student was walking home at 55th Street and Aztec Walk at 12:35 a.m. when she dropped her phone.  Before she could retrieve it, a man in a gold or silver Toyota Camry with a sunroof picked up the phone and went back to the vehicle, which had several passengers. Minutes later, that vehicle returned and the man offered the phone back to the victim. As she approached the vehicle, one of the occupants tried to pull her into the car.

WHITE HOUSE CONFERENCE AT SDSU AIMS TO INSPIRE COUNSELORS TO HELP STUDENTS ATTAIN COLLEGE DEGREES

November 18, 2014 (San Diego)--First Lady Michelle Obama gave a video welcoming message at a White House-sponsored conference designed to help high school counselors motivate more students to get college degrees.  A similar event was recently held at Harvard University.

The First Lady told those present, “I know that if we truly want to help our young people reach their college dreams, we need to support our school counselors. Our young people have so much potential, and they need someone in their lives who (believe) in them, and who can show them the steps they need to take to get to college.”

SDSU STUDENT DIES AFTER FALLING OFF 5-STORY BUILDING

WESTERN YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO RECEIVES FEDERAL PROTECTION UNDER ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT

October 6, 2014 (Sacramento)--The western population of the yellow-billed cuckoo will be protected as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has announced. The Service determined that listing a distinct population segment  of the bird in portions of 12 western states, Canada and Mexico is warranted. In the U.S., the listing will cover parts of Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Oregon and Washington.

Since 1980, nine sightings of the yellow-billed cuckoo have been made in San Diego County, though no nests have been found since the 1930s, according to the San Diego Bird Atlas Project at San Diego State University.  Locally the birds have been spotted from May to August, most commonly in stands of riparian willows and cottonwoods.

SDSU ROCKS THE VOTE

 

Last day to register for Nov. 4 election is Oct. 20

September 23, 2014 (San Diego) - San Diego State University's Rock the Vote campaign  officially launched this week and will continue through Election Day on Nov 4.  To kick off the campaign on Sept. 23, Associated Students hosted a barbecue on campus with live music, free food, and voter registration tables.  Students can also register to vote online at SDSU.edu/Rockthevote.

EAGLES TO ROCK SDSU WITH CONCERT OCT. 4

POLICE SEEK SUSPECTS IN COLLEGE AREA STABBING

July 20, 2014 (San Diego)—Campus police at San Diego State University are seeking public help to locate three suspects who fled a party in the 5000 block of College Place where an SDSU student was stabbed by an unknown person during an altercation.  The attack occurred  at 12:30 a.m. The victim was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

April 12, 2014 (San Diego) — San Diego State University has named Chukuka S. Enwemeka as its next provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs, the senior academic administrator at the university. Currently distinguished professor and Dean of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Enwemeka will begin as SDSU provost on July 1, succeeding Nancy Marlin, who is stepping down from the role.
