August 18, 2018 (San Diego) - San Diego State overcame an early dose of adversity and its resilience ultimately paid dividends in the end as it defeated New Mexico State, 1-0, in its season opener on Friday night atop SDSU Sports Deck. The Aztecs moved to 1-0 on the year, while the Aggies dropped to 0-1.

August 18, 2018 (Santee) - It’s finally back.  You’ve waited all winter, spring and summer for it.  ECM Friday Night Lights has returned and it’s back and better than ever.  Our first stop is to Santana High, where we also got our first glimpse of not only the 2018 Sultans, but also of the Red Hawks, who made the journey in from Mountain Empire High School in Pine Valley.

August 8, 2018 (St. Louis) - Ten athletes from East County’s LionHeart Fencing Academy took part in the United States National Fencing Championship held in St. Louis, Mo. from June 28 – July 7.

More than 4,000 competitors from throughout the nation participated in the largest fencing event in the world where the best fencers in the United States vied for gold.   National Champions were crowned in age groups from ages 8 to 80 with 60 titles in all three fencing disciplines (epee, foil and saber) for both men and women.

August 8, 2018 (Barranquilla, Colombia) - The San Diego State water polo duo of Lucia Carballo and Paola Vizcarra helped Mexico earn a bronze medal at the Central American and Caribbean Sports Game in Barranquilla, Colombia. The tournament took place July 26-Aug. 2, and featured eight games in eight days.

August 6, 2018 (San Diego’s East County) -- NBA superstar, Hall of Famer, sportscaster and hometown hero Bill Walton has announced he will be at East County Magazine’s 10-year-anniversary party, “East County Fest” on August 25th at Mission Trails Regional Park visitor center.

Walton was named to the NBA list of 50 best players of all time in 1997 among many other top honors -- and he started his winning sports right here in East County, leading Helix High School in La Mesa to CIF championships before going on to a legendary career in college and professional sports.

He has also generously agreed to donate autographed sports memorabilia from his personal collection for our fundraising auction. The value of these one-of-a-kind items? Priceless!

County Parks and Recreation will close several parks for the month of August, a precaution taken each year due to the season’s expected extreme heat.

El Capitan Preserve near Lakeside, Mt. Gower Preserve near Ramona, Hellhole Canyon Preserve in Valley Center and Wilderness Gardens in Pala are closed Aug. 1 through Aug. 31.

In addition, Agua Caliente Regional Park and Vallecito County Park in the Anza-Borrego Desert are closed all summer. They will reopen Labor Day weekend.

July 19, 2018 (San Diego) - Padres relievers Brad Hand and Adam Cimber have been dealt to the Cleveland Indians, Ken Rosenthal and Robert Murray of The Athletic report.

"Brad Hand to #Indians, sources tell me and @ByRobertMurray," Rosenthal tweeted just this morning.

The trade is crucial for the Indians, who, even though they sit atop the AL Central, have needed bullpen help all season long.

In return, the Padres will receive the Indians' no. 15 catching prospect, Francisco Mejia.

Hand signed with Cleveland for $6.5 million and $7 million the next two years, with a $10 million club option for 2021.

July 18, 2018 (San Diego) - Former San Diego State football running back Rashaad Penny has been named the 2017-18 Mountain West Male Athlete of the Year. He is the first Aztec male to win the award and the second SDSU student-athlete to be recognized, following in the footsteps of track and field’s Shanieka Thomas, who was the 2012-13 MW Female Athlete of the Year.

Two of the three - MJ James (Patrick Henry HS/Ohio State) and Hannah Johnson (La Habra HS/Cal State Fullerton) - were on teams that made the 2018 NCAA tournament, while Alicia Garcia (Mira Mesa HS) starred at nearby Palomar College.
