February 10, 2017 (Spring Valley) - Though Monarchs boys basketball is sporting a poor 8-16 record on the season, they hold a 2-5 record in Grossmont League play.  Tonight, the boys from the Vista hosted the Sultans of Santana, who hold a much better record of 14-11 overall and 4-4 in league play in the Monarchs’ last regular season game at home.

LOST DOG SURVIVES GUNSHOT WOUND IN HEAD

February 9, 2017 (Alpine) – Nylah, a Great Pyrenees dog that wandered out of an open gate in Alpine last Friday was found six miles away in the Japatul Road area on Tuesday with a bullet wound through her head. But miraculously, she survived.

LIVE NATION SEEKS TO MANAGE A RESTORED EAST COUNTY PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

February 9, 2017 (El Cajon) – The long-shuttered East County Performing Arts Center (ECPAC) may finally be reopened under management of Live Nation, which claims to be the global leader in live entertainment. According to the company’s website,  Live Nation operates in 7 nations, has produce shows in nearly 40 countries, and has a concert somewhere in the world every 20 minutes.

The El Cajon City Council will vote Tuesday, February 14th at its 3 p.m. meeting on authorizing the City manager to negotiate a draft management agreement with Live Nation .  View agenda and attachments.

PUBLIC HELP ASKED TO IDENTIFY SUSPECT KILLED IN HOME INVASION SHOOTING IN LEMON GROVE

February 9, 2017 (Lemon Grove) - The Sheriff's Homicide Detail wants the public's help in identifying a suspect who was killed in a home invasion in Lemon Grove.

It happened just before 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 7th at a home in the 2400 block of Edding Drive. Investigators say two armed suspects forced their way into the home. The homeowner's son and one of the suspects suffered gunshot wounds after a struggle. That suspect died. The homeowner's son is recovering from non-life threatening injuries.

EL CAJON PLANNING COMMISSION REJECTS CREMATORIUM; OWNER WILL APPEAL TO CITY COUNCIL

February 8, 2017 (El Cajon) -- The owner of East County Mortuary says he will appeal the Planning Commission’s denial of his application to open a crematorium in an El Cajon industrial park.

On Feb. 7, the Commission voted 3-1 to deny the crematorium and approve findings by the city’s planning staff that the crematorium wasn’t compatible with the manufacturing uses in the zone.

February 8, 2017 (Spring Valley) – A 75-year-old man who was crossing Sweetwater Road north of Tyler Street in Spring Valley at 10 p.m. last night outside of a marked crosswalk was struck by a Mercedes. He died at the scene of his injuries.

LEMON GROVE MAN OPENS FIRE AT INTRUDERS WHO SHOT SON; ONE GUNMAN DEAD, SECOND FLED SCENE

February 7, 2017 (Lemon Grove) – A home invasion turned deadly after two men armed with pistols broke into a home on Edding Drive in Lemon Grove shortly before 2 a.m. 

One of the intruders shot and injured Francisco Suarez, Jr., 22.  His father, Francisco Suarez, 44, fired back and killed one of the gunmen, who died at the scene.

In addition, we interviewed Diana Lindsay, a historian who has written extensively about Anza Borrego Desert State Park. 

They shared some fascinating history with us about our desert region, and the colorful characters from the region’s past, info on the State Park, as well as the Foundation’s successes and continuing efforts to purchase and preserve privately owned lands within the largest state park in California.

EL CAJON ASSISTANT CITY MANAGER MOVING TO TEXAS

February 5, 2017 (El Cajon) – El Cajon Assistant City Manager Majed Al-Ghafry has accepted a position as Assistant City Manager for Dallas, Texas.  A Syrian immigrant who came to the U.S. as a child, Al-Ghafry previously worked in Texas and has over 28 years of experience in municipal government.

 “He’s been a real asset to this city,”  El Cajon Councilman Gary Kendrick told ECM, adding that Al-Ghafry speaks Arabic and has been helpful in translating and explaining city ordinances to immigrants from the Middle East.

February 4, 2017 (Lemon Grove) – Three young people and several dogs died of injuries in a collision in Lemon Grove Wednesday evening.  A woman and a 4-year-old girl also sustained major injuries.  All of the victims are in the same family and funds have been set up to help the surviving relatives.

POLICE SEEK MAN WHO ATTACKED WOMAN OUTSIDE LA MESA DENNY’S

MOTORCYCLIST, 83, DIES IN RAMONA COLLISION

February 2, 2017 (Ramona) – An 83-year-old Poway man on a motorcycle was struck head-on by a Ford Crown Victoria that crossed the double yellow line on Highland Valley Road in Ramona this afternoon. The Poway man was ejected from the motorcycle and died at the scene.
