May 18, 2012 (Lakeside) – The 3rd annual Lakeside Relay for Life will be held June 9-10. This is a 24 hour, free family fun event open to the public to raise funds and awareness for The American Cancer Society while having a great time together.
Teams of people camp out and take turns walking or running around the track. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event, which represents the reality that cancer never sleeps and neither do we. By participating, you honor cancer survivors, pay tribute to the lives we've lost to the disease, and raise money to help fight cancer in your community.

May 14, 2012 (Palomar)--Rick Barclay, Chairman of Friends of Palomar Mountain State Park, is pleased to announce a $20,000 pledge from SDG&E that will help keep the park open and expand its educational programs for visitors and underserved communities. Palomar is one of 70 state parks slated for permanent closure due to recent budget cutbacks. Friends of Palomar Mountain State Park is the non-profit association working to close the gap between the park's revenue and operating expenses through community donations in order to keep the park open.

May 9, 2012 (Escondido) -- Sponsors are being sought for patriotic banners honoring men and women from Escondido that have served in our Armed Forces. Up to one hundred, eight-foot-tall banners will be displayed on light poles throughout Downtown Escondido by the middle of June through Independence Day, each one honoring a specific Escondido service person. Each banner will include a photo of the honored serviceman or women, his or her name, and the branch and era of service.

April 30, 2012 (Santee) -- Swarming like bees all over an area of the San Diego River Trail in Santee, close to 400 local members and friends of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints joined together on Saturday, April 28 to participate in the annual “Mormon Helping Hands” day of service. Volunteers of all ages performed duties such as trail maintenance, fencing installation, concrete breakdown, weed abatement, painting, laying down mulch, litter removal, water primrose and tamarisk removal and overall beautification tasks of the area.

Santee Teen receives Miss Teen San Diego Cities Honor
April 16, 2012 (San Diego) -- On Sunday, April 15, 2012 Kayla Ross of Rancho Bernardo was crowned Miss San Diego Cities 2012 while Savannah Keener of Santee was crowned Miss Teen San Diego Cities 2012. Young women from across San Diego County had entered the pageants in hopes of becoming the new city ambassadors. The contestants were scored on personal interview, speech, poise and personality, physical fitness and beauty, evening gown and an on stage impromptu question.

CNN estimates that from 100,000 to 300,000 children are being prostituted on the streets of the US. It is the girl next door we are talking about. Fundraiser to Support SDPOA Widows and Orphans Fund
April 9, 2012 (San Diego) – After the tragic shooting and death of SDPD Officer Jeremy Henwood, it was discovered that his last stop was the McDonald’s located at 3879 Fairmont Ave., where he bought cookies for a young boy.In honor of the life of Officer Henwood, the SDPOA is partnering with Phil Palumbo, the owner and operator of that McDonald’s to raise funds for the SDPOA Widows and Orphans Fund.A portion of the proceeds from purchases made between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on April 11 will benefit the fund.

April 5, 2012 -- Miss Rancho Jamul, Stephanie Grecco and Miss Teen Rancho Jamul, Gigi Gauthier we crowned Saturday, March 31 at the pageant held at the Steele Canyon High School Theater.
Stephanie Grecco is a 21 year old student at Cuyamaca College, and is currently working toward her Associates Degree in Music Industry Studies. She plans to attain her Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance. Stephanie enjoys singing, song writing, playing piano and guitar, and hopes to one day impact lives with the music she creates.

April 4, 2012 (Rancho San Diego) – Cub Scouts and their families got a tour yesterday of at MCAS Miramar.They were able to see demonstrations of the K-9 dogs used to detect explosives.They were also shown how a fire is fought should a crash occur on the runway.Finally, they were shown how ordinance is detonated via a robot and if necessary with highly trained Marines in the field.

Law enforcement have identified San Diego as an international gateway for sex trafficking and one of the 13 cities in the nation with the highest incidence of child prostitution, including local teens. Forced marriages and modern slavery are also critical issues. Worldwide, trafficking is an estimated $40 billion industry affecting every country.
