EL CAJON AND RANCHO SAN DIEGO AMBASSADORS CROWNED

 

March 25, 2011 (El Cajon)--At the Cuyamaca College Performing Arts Center this week, the 2011 Ambassadors for El Cajon and Rancho San Diego were chosen.

 

Miss El Cajon for 2011 is Savana Kalfayan, 18, a Valhalla High School student. Miss Teen El Cajon is Katie Hudgins, 16, a student at Grossmont High School. Natalie Potesan, 20, a Grossmont College student, was crowned Miss Rancho San Diego 2011, while MacKenzie Manns, 14, a student at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace, was named Miss Teen Rancho San Diego.

CLIMBING THE WALLS: SHERIFF’S SEARCH & RESCUE VOLUNTEERS LEARN RAPPELING SKILLS

 

March 25, 2011 (San Diego) – Many San Diegans are unaware that the Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Unit is an all-volunteer unit.

 

To learn skills needed for rescuing people who may become trapped in rugged terrain, 25 volunteers are undergoing training this weekend by rappelling down the side of a 70-foot-high tower at Stu Segall Productions in Kearny Mesa.

LA MESA WOMAN CROWNED MISS SAN DIEGO'S OUTSTANDING TEEN

 

SAN DIEGO, CA – On Saturday, March 19, the Miss San Diego Pageant and Scholarship Association held the 2011 Miss San Diego Pageant at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. Thirty-five talented women ages 13-24 participated in a program that has been a San Diego tradition since the late 1920’s. Over $4,000.00 in scholarships were awarded.

 

Danamarie McNicoll Carter of La Mesa won the title of Miss San Diego’s Outstanding Teen 2011. She is a former Miss Teen La Mesa and a student at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace. She wowed the judges with piano performance which accounted for 35% of the overall score.

DISASTER RELIEF FUND TO AID JAPAN SET UP BY SAN DIEGO-YOKOHAMA SISTER CITY SOCIETY

 

"You may remember that when the City of San Diego experienced the devastating wildfires in 2007, the citizens of Yokohama donated over one million yen to the Wildfire Disaster Relief Fund." -- Harry Bishop, San Diego-Yokohama Sister City Society

 

March 21, 2011 (San Diego) – Victims of the 2007 wildfires our region received help from San Diego's sister city, Yokahama Japan. Now, some local residents are seeking to give back to Japanese people in need. The San Diego-Yokohama Sister City Society is establishing a disaster relief fund for victims of the 9.0 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

 

“We are asking everyone to join us to help those who lost loved ones, homes, and communities to this disaster,” Harry Bishop told East County Magazine.

CALIFORNIA SEARCH DOG TEAMS ARRIVE IN JAPAN

 

Rescued dogs now trained to rescue people

 

March 15, 2011 (San Diego) –Twelve search dog teams, including six from California and six from Virginia, are now on the ground in Japan searching for survivors. “It’s a very warm story. These were all shelter dogs,” Janet Reineck of the National Search Dog Foundation in Ojai, California, told East County Magazine.

 

Now the rescued dogs help rescue humans following some of the most devastating disasters in history.

March 12, 2011 (San Diego) -- The massive 9.1 earthquake-fourth worst in recorded history--and subsequent tsunami in Japan Friday has left the world reeling. More than 1,300  are dead, Modern Tokyo Times reports, and 88,000 missing according to Business News. Today, 150,000 have been evacuated due to emergencies at nuclear reactors.

Safe Start Conference to Take Place March 18

 

March 7, 2011 (San Diego)--Given that a high number of domestic violence victims are children, the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) and its many partners are sponsoring the Safe Start San Diego 2011 Conference. The event, titled “Working with Children and Families Impacted by Violence”, will take place Friday, March 18  from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Marina Village Conference Center, 1936 Quivira Way, San Diego.

 

The conference is free and designed for professionals from any organization that serves children, youth and families; however, the general public is also welcome.

LIONS, TIGERS & BEARS NEEDS HELP TO COMPLETE NEW BEAR HABITAT FOR RESCUED CUB "LIBERTY"

 
March 2, 2011 (Alpine) - Lions Tigers & Bears (LTB) has released new photos of construction at the rescue facility’s new Black Bear Habitat, which will be home to "Liberty," the young black bear cub rescued from the Mt. Baldy area last Fourth of July. 
 
 Currently, Liberty remains in the quarantine area, which, at her current weight of 157 pounds, she is quickly outgrowing.  However, without further funds, the construction of Liberty's home may come to a standstill, said LTB founder Bobbi Brink.  LTB still needs to purchase the fencing, the most expensive part of the enclosure, the roof for the bedroom area, as well as provide power to the area.

February 28, 2011 (Lemon Grove) -- Rosemary Putnam, Lemon Grove outstanding humanitarian and volunteer, was recently presented the Paul Harris Award by the Rotary Club of Lemon Grove for her community service as Lemon Grove's Peacemaker of the Year. The Paul Harris Award represents a donation of $1000 given by Lemon Grove Rotary to the Foundation of Rotary International in the name of Rosemary Putnam.

February 17, 2011 (San Diego) – Dory Beatrice felt shocked to learn that people who fled persecution and have been granted asylum in America are being released on the streets of San Diego with no funds, no information on resources, and no place to go.

 

So she worked with local Rotary chapters to raise funds and open Project Refuge, a transitional housing program in partnership with Somali Family Services that now assists asylees who have no family or friends here to help them.

VETERANS HERALDED AS ALPINE WALL OF HONOR BREAKS GROUND

January 29, 2011 (Alpine) -- Elected officials, tribal leaders, community members and veterans turned out this morning at a “Labor of Love” event to break ground for Alpine’s Wall of Honor.

Viejas tribal chairman Anthony Pico spoke movingly about his own military service in the Army and his memories of visiting the Viet Nam memorial in Washington D.C., where 13 of his friends’ names are inscribed. “For every friend who has fallen, there is someone who will remember them,” he said, expressing sorrow that his fallen comrades could not live into the autumn of their lives but instead, sacrificed their futures for our country. “They stayed forever young in my mind,” he said.

January 26, 2011 (Lakeside)--Recently the Cub Scout pack #3 from Our Lady Of Perpetual Help Catholic School donated 20 bird nesting boxes to the Lakeside River Park Conservancy. The boys had built the boxes at their meetings with the help of their dads. While they were building , the scouts also learned about conservancy and animal habitat.

AN ANGEL FROM HAITI

January 24, 2011 (Mt. Helix) – More than a year has passed since a massive earthquake leveled Haiti. While much of the country remains in shambles, there is one East County resident who has made a positive difference to the people of her homeland. That person is Dr. Carolle Jean-Murat.

When asked why she has given so much of herself to the people of Haiti, Murat replied, “My mother told me ‘To whom much is given, much is expected.’ So, I am doing this, just because.”

January 19, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – Nine-year-old Makena Sacks of Blossom Valley volunteers with her mother, Cate Sacks, to train dogs rescued from shelters. Now Makena asks help from ECM readers to save cats slated to be destroyed.

 

“I am hoping that I can save them but there are so many,” she writes. “The people at the shelter are putting cats down starting today, I need help taking these cats.”

VETERANS FOR PEACE SEEKS HELP FOR HOMELESS

 

January 2, 2010 (San Diego) – As winter temperatures locally dip below freezing, San Diego Veterans For Peace is distributing sleeping bags and ponchos to the homeless.

“So far we have distributed 145 sets, and are seeking donations to continue,” said Ramona resident Dave Patterson, Veterans for Peace spokesman.  The group seeks donations of cash, sleeping bags and ponchos to help protect local veterans from winter storms and cold.  Last year, more than 60 homeless people died on the streets of San Diego, many from exposure to harsh winter weather.
