LA MESA POLICE SEEK TEDDY BEARS FOR HOSPITALIZED CHILDREN

 

December 10, 2010 (La Mesa)-- La Mesa Police Department seeks donations of teddy bears and other stuffed animals for the 20th Annual Regional Law Enforcement Teddy Bear Drive, which benefits children at Rady Children’s Hospital. The public is encouraged to donate new and unused teddy bears (with tags still affixed) or other stuffed animals, which can be dropped off in the La Mesa Police Department lobby in the designated barrels.

December 4, 2010 (Santee)--Santana High School students channeled their inner super models on Friday night for a charity fashion show at the New Heights Community Church in Santee. Using clothes from their own wardrobes, students from Santana high’s Invisible Children club took to the catwalk to raise money for the Invisible Children Foundation.

December 2, 2010 (Spring Valley)—Firefighters and Sheriff Deputies received a special gift on November 16. Elizabeth Swoyer, a Brownie with Troop 6107, and her brother Nathan, a Webelo Scout, stopped by San Miguel Fire Station 15 in Spring Valley to present firefighters and Sheriff’s officials with the fruits--or rather, nuts--of their their labor.

GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER BUYS 240 TURKEYS FOR THE NEEDY, ASKS PUBLIC TO GIVE TO OTHERS

November 25, 2010 (Sacramento) -- After hearing that a Salvation Army in Compton was overwhelmed with 140 more requests from needy families for turkeys than it could fill, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger took action.  He called the center and wrote a check for 240 turkeys, "to make sure you don't run out," the Los Angeles Times reported.

CALTRANS BLOOD DRIVE NETS 42 PINTS FOR SADDLETRAMPS CRASH SURVIVORS

November 20, 2010 (San Diego) – Yesterday, Caltrans District 11 hosted a blood drive with the San Diego Blood Bank, capturing 42 pints to help members of the Lakeside Saddletramps motorcycle club who were injured in a November 13 crash in Ocotillo that also killed four club members.

November 19, 2010 (La Mesa)--On October 2, 2010 at 5:15 p.m., Richard Morse, 59, of La Mesa collapsed outside the beer garden at the annual La Mesa Oktoberfest. An off-duty Pasadena firefighter and a Scripps Hospital nurse witnessed Morse collapse and determined that he went into cardiac arrest and began CPR. Two La Mesa Firefighters, Captain Todd Feneis and Captain Steve Pullen were working EMS Bike Patrol and responded to the incident.

November 18, 2010 (Lakeside) – Two funds have been established to help the families of four members of the Saddletramps motorcycle club in Lakeside who lost their lives in a tragic accident November 13th.  Community members have also rallied to organize a blood drive and collect sympathy cards.

 

“These families include one who lost both a mom and dad, leaving behind two young sons. The families are in need of aid to help with funeral costs as well as money for food, utilities and the basics of life,” a press release from the Lakeside Chamber of Commerce states.

RESCUE TASK FORCE MOUNTS RELIEF EFFORT FOR CHOLERA VICTIMS IN HAITI

 

November 11, 2010 (El Cajon) – Rescue Task Force, a nonprofit organization founded in El Cajon, and World Emergency Relief of Carlsbad are sending relief to victims of the cholera outbreak in Haiti. More donations are sought as the death toll rises. More than 724 people have died since the outbreak began in October, and more than 11,000 have been infected. A thousand new cases a week are being reported, according to BBC news.

November 5, 2010 (Lemon Grove) --On October 29, Mt. Miguel’s winning football team (7 and 1 this season) tackled a new task—giving out 41,000 pounds of food to hungry people at the Lemon Grove. Lutheran Church The players, including Pastor Ula Tausaga’s son Smith, were some 50 strong and strode in as a vigorous phalanx, clad in  red "Matador" jerseys. The team distributed food as the line of recipients moved past, offering encouraging words and flashing winning smiles.

November 3, 2010 (San Diego's East County) – East County’s Iraqi Christians will hold a prayer gathering tonight from 5-6:30 p.m. in the Prescott Promenade at 201 East Main Street, El Cajon.

 

A crowd of 500 or more is expected to attend the gathering, which is held in remembrance of Iraqi Christians massacred November 1st in an Al Qaeda attack on a Catholic church in Iraq.

The effort supports the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW) Operation Uplink™. Now in its fourth year, Operation Uplink offers free call days for deployed and hospitalized American service members. Sport Clips hopes to raise $300,000.

HELP SOUGHT FOR SANTEE CHILD WITH CANCER

October 15, 2010 (Santee) – The Santee Chamber of Commerce sent in a request for help for the family of Ryan O’Dell, an eight-year-old student at Rio Seco School in Santee who was diagnosed in August with a malignant brain tumor. He has already had two brain surgeries and his family also has a disabled five-year-old child who requires full-time care.
