June 15, 2012 (San Diego's East County) -- Buying a round of golf for dear old dad at Carlton Oaks Golf Course for Father’s Day is not an option for many in the East County. Not even buying a tie, cologne, or brunch at Barona or Viejas casinos.
 
The stark reality for many, young and old alike, is that their father has already passed away.  What remains are memories, photos, belongings, and a graveside.

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY’S “RELAY FOR LIFE” AT BATES NUT FARM

 
June 10, 2012 (Valley Center) -- Bates Nut Farm hosts the American Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life of Valley Center” from 9:00 am June 16 – 9:00 am June 17. This overnight relay-style event raises funds to help the American Cancer society save lives. Over 15 teams have already been formed, and the members from each team will take turns walking the course over the 24 hour period. Food, games and activities provide entertainment and fundraising opportunities throughout the event, and the family-friendly environment provides a sense of community.

June 9, 2012 (Spring Valley) – A benefit concert for The Mighty Joe Longa will be held at the Spring Valley Moose Lodge, 9062 Memory Lane, Spring Valley on June 10 from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.  The entertainment will include the Robin Henkel Band with Billy Watson, Modern Rhythym, Tomcat Courtney, Joey Harris and Mental Farmers, Black Market III and Mojo Nixon.  The master of ceremonies will be Jim McInnes.

“ BROTHER/SISTER” TEAM SENDING CHILDREN TO WHEELCHAIR CAMP!

 

June 9, 2012 (San Diego) -- Sister and brother team, Danamarie, 17 and Collin McNicholl-Carter, 14 from La Mesa have been bringing awareness to the San Diego Adaptive Sports Foundation (SDASF) by recruiting their friends to walk in the 3rd annual “Stroll and Roll” events since 2010. Over 250 people attended this year’s event on May 20, 2012 to walk and/or roll in wheelchairs to raise money to send children to SDASF Jr. Wheelchair Sports Camp on Mission Bay.

STATE PARKS FOUNDATION LENDS A HAND TO KEEP PALOMAR PARK OPEN

May 30, 2012 (San Diego) -- Dressed in brightly colored robes and hijabs, the women of Amn-o-nisa make a powerful statement with their presence alone. These 11 Pakistani women have come to the United States for the second time to spread their message of peace and international cooperation.

The name Amn-o-nisa translates to “women for peace,” which is the message the group hoped to spread on their visit to the U.S. The group visited Washington D.C., San Diego and Los Angeles and met with political figures including Senators Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein.

IT'S OFFICIAL! STATE SIGNS DEAL TO KEEP PALOMAR STATE PARK OPEN

 
May 30, 2012 (Palomar) -- It's official Palomar Mountain State Park, which was slated for complete and permanent closure this July, will be permitted to stay open for the next three years as long as local citizens are willing to cover the deficit between the park's income and expenses. Palomar was one of 70 parks destined for shuttering due to state financial woes.

3RD ANNUAL LAKESIDE RELAY FOR LIFE 2012 JUNE 9-10

May 18, 2012 (Lakeside) – The 3rd annual Lakeside Relay for Life will be held June 9-10. This is a 24 hour, free family fun event open to the public to raise funds and awareness for The American Cancer Society while having a great time together.

Teams of people camp out and take turns walking or running around the track. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event, which represents the reality that cancer never sleeps and neither do we. By participating, you honor cancer survivors, pay tribute to the lives we've lost to the disease, and raise money to help fight cancer in your community.

May 18,2012 (La Mesa ) -- What is bullying?  Why does it happen? Has it happened to you? What can be done about it? Who can help – and how? These are the questions the young people of the United Church of Christ of La Mesa (UCCLM) have been brainstorming on Sunday mornings, questions which sprang from class assignments, observation, personal encounter and the recognition that different school districts approach the problem differently – some aggressively, some only in response to specific incidents.

SDG&E DONATES TO SUPPORT PALOMAR MOUNTAIN STATE PARK

 
May 14, 2012 (Palomar)--Rick Barclay, Chairman of Friends of Palomar Mountain State Park, is pleased to announce a $20,000 pledge from SDG&E that will help keep the park open and expand its educational programs for visitors and underserved communities. Palomar is one of 70 state parks slated for permanent closure due to recent budget cutbacks. Friends of Palomar Mountain State Park is the non-profit association working to close the gap between the park's revenue and operating expenses through community donations in order to keep the park open.

May 9, 2012 (Escondido) -- Sponsors are being sought for patriotic banners honoring men and women from Escondido that have served in our Armed Forces. Up to one hundred, eight-foot-tall banners will be displayed on light poles throughout Downtown Escondido by the middle of June through Independence Day, each one honoring a specific Escondido service person. Each banner will include a photo of the honored serviceman or women, his or her name, and the branch and era of service.

HELPING HANDS IN SANTEE

April 30, 2012 (Santee) -- Swarming like bees all over an area of the San Diego River Trail in Santee, close to 400 local members and friends of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints joined together on Saturday, April 28 to participate in the annual “Mormon Helping Hands” day of service. Volunteers of all ages performed duties such as trail maintenance, fencing installation, concrete breakdown, weed abatement, painting, laying down mulch, litter removal, water primrose and tamarisk removal and overall beautification tasks of the area.

SAN DIEGO RIVER TRAIL CLEAN-UP BEAUTIFICATION & RESTORATION PROJECT IN SANTEE APRIL 28

April 27, 2012 (Santee) – On April 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. an estimated 250 volunteers will clean-up, beautify and restore the area of the San Diego River Trail in Santee.  Volunteers will meet at the northeast pavilion in the Walmart parking lot, 170 Town Center Parkway.

The event is sponsored by Mormon Helping Hands with the City of Santee, the San Diego River Park Foundation, Santee Kiwanis and Santee-Lakeside Rotary Clubs joining in the community effort.

FUNDRAISER APRIL 25 IN SANTEE FOR INJURED BICYCLIST GRANT FISHER

April 22, 2012 (Santee) -- Join family and friends of Grant Fisher on April 25 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Joe’s Old Fashion BBQ, 205 Town Center Parkway, Santee to help raise funds for his financial recovery. 

Fisher, a San Diego County Credit Union employee, has spent most of this year confined to a hospital bed recovering after he was run over by an elderly driver in the bike lane of Sorrento Valley Boulevard during a lunchtime bike ride.

In collaboration with Jewish World Watch, San Diego Jewish Academy will hold a Walk to End Genocide, which is being organized by a group of ninth and tenth grade students. The walk is being held to raise awareness about the mass atrocities occurring in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
