September 15, 2016 (San Diego’s East County) — Steele Canyon High School student Matthew Morozov and Helix Charter High School student Winston Lau are among 16,000 semi-finalists named in the 62^nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state.

September 12, 2016 (Santee) -- An East County teacher is among five San Diego County instructors named teachers of the year.  The winners were nominated by their school districts out of 26,000 teachers countywide and were honored at a ”Salute to Teachers” gala event on Saturday.

September 6, 2016 (San Diego) - For the 17^th consecutive year, the Spanos family and the San Diego Chargers are continuing their support for youth health and fitness by awarding $250,000 in Chargers Champions grants to San Diego County schools.

September 1,2016  (San Diego’s East County) – Beyond the blizzard of ballot measures statewide and candidates on your November ballot, East County voters will be asked to weigh in on a variety of local initiatives with big impacts.

Those include countywide measures:  one a tax to fund transportation, the other  a measure that would set a precedent for developers to  evade environmental reviews by taking projects directly to voters.   There are also medical marijuana dispensary measures on the ballots in Lemon Grove and La Mesa, a redistricting proposal in El Cajon, and school bond measures in the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College, Grossmont Union High School, and Cajon Valley  Union school districts.  Here are details:

Let’s All Have A Little Class!

August 30, 2016 (San Diego’s East County) -- When I was younger I hated all the “back to school commercials and ads.” It was the dreaded reminder summer was over and it was back to school time!

One class we all need is, It’s important to use extra caution while driving as excited students will be walking, bicycling, driving, riding buses and may not be paying attention while traveling to and from school.

August 2, 2016 (San Diego) - The San Diego State women's lacrosse team was honored by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) for outstanding academic achievement, the organization announced. The Aztecs were named an IWLCA Academic Honor Squad for posting a grade point average over 3.0 during the 2015-16 school year.

July 29, 2016 (San Diego) - The San Diego State women’s tennis team and four individuals were recognized for their efforts in the classroom by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

July 25, 2016 (San Diego) — Conrad Prebys, a generous philanthropist who supported numerous San Diego nonprofit organizations, health and education centers, died Sunday, July 24^th of cancer at Scripps Mercy Hospital with his family at his side.

No filing fees, ballot statement costs  $315 to $360 in smaller trustee districts

July 24, 2016 (San Diego’s East County ) – For the first time, the Grossmont Union High School District will hold elections in November for individual trustee districts.   There are no filing fees, though modest fees are charged for candidates to publish ballot statements. With smaller districts, the cost for ballot statements is far less than in the past --just $315 in Trustee Area 1 (Lemon Grove/Spring Valley/La Prensa),which is an open seat, and $360 in Trustee Area 2 (La Mesa/Casa de Oro/Mt. Helix and part of Rancho San Diego) currently represented by Jim Stieringer.

The candidate filing period opened July 18 and closes August 12^th.  August 12 is also the deadline for candidates to submit ballot statements, which for the first time will be accepted electronically.

June 30, 2016 (El Cajon) – Crews working on an electrical power line caused a power outage that has forced closure of Grossmont College on Wednesday.

Anne Krueger with the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District said all classes have been cancelled and offices closed on the campus until after the July 4^th holiday.  The school will reopen on Tuesday, July 5.

June 22, 2016 (San Diego's East County -- Due to the Border Fire,the Mountain Empre school district has posted the following information on rescheduling graduations to El Capitan High School for high school and middle school students, as well as cancellation of classes:
