FORCIBLE ARREST OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN MAN AT SDSU SPARKS OBJECTIONS FROM STUDENTS

September 15, 2016 (San Diego) — An arrest at San Diego State University today sparked protests after videos posted online showed SDSU police officers forcing the African-American man, who was not a student to the groundVideos posted on the Daily Aztec show the man standing on a balcony at the student center near where the rapper Chance was slated to perform when he was tackled from behind.(Warning, strong language). Video does not show events leading up to the incident.  The man, whose identity has not been released, shouted to the officers, “You’re breaking my arms!” and insisted he didn’t do anything wrong. He was arrested after the take-down.

Students took to social media with the hashtag #BlackUnderAttackSDSU.  But SDSU’s president Elliott Hirshman issued a statement indicating the man had jumped a construction fence and had been reported by two callers to be acting erratically.

TWO EAST COUNTY STUDENTS NAMED NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP SEMI-FINALISTS

September 15, 2016 (San Diego’s East County) — Steele Canyon High School student Matthew Morozov and Helix Charter High School student Winston Lau are among 16,000 semi-finalists named in the 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state.

GROSSMONT BOARD APPROVES MORE MONEY TO FIGHT LAWSUIT OVER ALPINE HIGH SCHOOL

September 14, 2016 (San Diego’s East County) – The Grossmont Union High School District’s board voted 3-2 to approve more funds for legal defense in a lawsuit filed by Alpine taxpayers and parents. The lawsuit and a Grand Jury report both contended that the district misappropriated bond funds approved by voters for an Alpine High School.

Those include countywide measures:  one a tax to fund transportation, the other  a measure that would set a precedent for developers to  evade environmental reviews by taking projects directly to voters.   There are also medical marijuana dispensary measures on the ballots in Lemon Grove and La Mesa, a redistricting proposal in El Cajon, and school bond measures in the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College, Grossmont Union High School, and Cajon Valley  Union school districts.  Here are details:

August 30, 2016 (San Diego’s East County) -- When I was younger I hated all the “back to school commercials and ads.” It was the dreaded reminder summer was over and it was back to school time!

One class we all need is, It’s important to use extra caution while driving as excited students will be walking, bicycling, driving, riding buses and may not be paying attention while traveling to and from school.

July 28, 2016 (New Orleans) - San Diego State was named a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team selection on Thursday. Led by Kassidy Ellis, Alexa Evans and Ellison Grove, the Aztecs finished the 2016 campaign with a 3.07 cumulative GPA.

GOVERNOR SIGNS BLOCK BILL REQUIRING MORE DISCLOSURES BY NON-ABA ACCREDITED LAW SCHOOLS

July 24, 2016 (San Diego’s East County ) – For the first time, the Grossmont Union High School District will hold elections in November for individual trustee districts.   There are no filing fees, though modest fees are charged for candidates to publish ballot statements. With smaller districts, the cost for ballot statements is far less than in the past --just $315 in Trustee Area 1 (Lemon Grove/Spring Valley/La Prensa),which is an open seat, and $360 in Trustee Area 2 (La Mesa/Casa de Oro/Mt. Helix and part of Rancho San Diego) currently represented by Jim Stieringer.

The candidate filing period opened July 18 and closes August 12th.  August 12 is also the deadline for candidates to submit ballot statements, which for the first time will be accepted electronically.

GROSSMONT COLLEGE CLOSED UNTIL TUESDAY DUE TO POWER OUTAGE

June 30, 2016 (El Cajon) – Crews working on an electrical power line caused a power outage that has forced closure of Grossmont College on Wednesday.

Anne Krueger with the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District said all classes have been cancelled and offices closed on the campus until after the July 4th holiday.  The school will reopen on Tuesday, July 5.

SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS AFFIRMATIVE ACTION AT PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES

June 27, 2016 (Washington D.C. ) — By a slim 4-3 margin, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that affirmative action is legal and that it is constitutional for public colleges and universities to consider race as a factor for admission. But the court also cautioned that educators must also show that other means of addressing diversity have failed.
