August 7, 2012 (San Diego's East County) - The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for the south central portions of San Diego including but not limited to Pine Valley, Descanso and Morena Village.  

In addition, a flash flood watch is in effect for East County's mountains and high desert areas. Hundreds of low water crossings are potentially dangerous in heavy rains, the NWS warns; do not attempt to drive through flooded roads as even a few inches of swiftly moving water can sweep a vehicle away.

BOY, 12, ACCIDENTALLY SHOOTS SISTER IN LA MESA

August 6, 2012 (La Mesa)—A 12-year-old boy shot his sister in the shoulder in what police believe is an accidental shooting  La Mesa Police responded to a 911 call from the boy at 9:44 a.m. today at the family’s home in the 8800 block of Jefferson Avenue in La Mesa.

MOUNTAIN LION SPOTTED IN SANTEE NEIGHBORHOOD

August 6, 2012 (Santee)--A mountain lion has been reported in the 10700 block of Princess Arlene, a residential neighborhood in Santee.  Incident Page Network indicates that San Diego Sheriff and animal control officers are conducting a search of the area.

A mountain lion was also spotted days ago in an Alpine residential neighborhood.  Mountain lions are native to our region, though the normally shy animals are rarely seen.  Shooting a mountain lion is illegal in California, except in cases where a permit is obtained such as to address livestock predation.  Violators have faced stiff penalties.

OTAY LAKES ROAD CLOSED AFTER VEHICLE PLUNGES INTO LAKE

 

August 5, 2012 (Otay)—A vehicle has plunged into the Otay Lake reservoir, multiple sources confirm. Divers assisted in rescuing people trapped inside, including two juveniles.  The children were in CPR status, IPN reported, but were later taken to a hospital by medical helicopter. Their condition has not been released.

CAUSE OF SDSU FRAT HOUSE DEATH DETERMINED

  August 5, 2012 (San Diego)—An overdose of prescription drugs caused the death of Barzeen Barzanji, 20, a Santee resident found dead in a fraternity house at San Diego State University on April 20, 2012.  Following testing, the County Medical Examiner has now concluded that acute oxycodone and alprazolam intoxication  were responsible.

"INCENDIARY" FIRE DAMAGES RESTAURANT IN LEMON GROVE

August 4, 2012 (Lemon Grove) – The Sheriff’s Bomb and Arson Squad is investigating a fire tht was “incendiary in nature,” according to Heartland Fire.  The blaze began outside Mariscos Negro Durazo restaurant on Federal Boulevard near Broadway in Lemon Grove shortly before 3:15 a.m.

DOGS KILL EMU ON JAMUL-AREA RANCH

 
August 2, 2012 (Deerhorn Valley) – Two dogs running loose attacked and killed an emu inside a pen on the Hornsby ranch on Sierra Cielo in Deerhorn Valley on Tuesday. According to the Deerhorn Valley Antler, the dogs were described as a pit bull mix (white with brown spots) and a brown Shepherd mix.

ANOTHER POWER OUTAGE SATURDAY MORNING IN LA MESA

August 2, 2012 (La Mesa)—For the second weekend in a row, La Mesa residents will experience a scheduled power outage, SDG&E has announced. The power will go out at 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 4 and is expected to last up to five hours. 

A previous planned outage occurred July 28.  Traffic signals will be affected at University and Lowell Street as well as University Ave. and Parks Avenue.

A flash flood warning will expire at 6pm for east central San Diego county.  Earlier at 4:24pm national weather service doopler radar indicated heavy rain producing flash flooding, with one hour rainfall rates between 1.5 and 3 inches.  CHP reported roadway flooding in Ocotillo Wells.

DRIVER TO BE CHARGED IN FATAL VALLEY CENTER CRASH

 

July 29, 2012 (Valley Center) – Salvador Leon, 30, of Valley Center lost control while driving his 2004 Toyota Scion eastbound on Valley Center Road east of Queensbridge last night at 10:47 p.m., hitting a telephone pole. The collision killed his front seat passenger, a 23-year-old man from Valley Center.

HEARTLAND FIRE CHIEF ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

 
July 27, 2012 (San Diego's East County) -- The Fire Chief for Heartland Fire & Rescue in El Cajon, La Mesa and Lemon Grove, Mike Scott has announced his retirement. His final day will be July 29, 2012. He had been the Fire Chief for the City of El Cajon since June of 2005, and became the Heartland Fire Chief, overseeing the three cities, in October of 2009.
