March 27, 2016 (Alpine) --The Alpine Woman’s Club Victorian Tea has been compared to the teas at the Hotel Del Coronado and Westgate Hotel. This is the perfect venue to showcase your finest hat, share good conversation with good friends and introduce your daughter or granddaughter to their first Victorian Tea. What a wonderful experience for any young lady ages 8 years and up. Entertainment will feature piano music by William D. Young, playing songs from yesteryear. There will also be a raffle, door prizes and other surprises. Period attire is recommended but not required.

March 27, 2016 (San Diego) – On Good Friday, Pope Francis washed the feet of European immigrants including Christians, Muslims and Hindus, demonstrating his outreach to people of all faiths and calling for world peace. 

In his Easter Sunday mass at the Vatican, the pontiff stated, ““This day invites us not to forget those men and women seeking a better future, an ever more numerous throng of migrants and refugees, including many children, fleeing war, hunger, poverty and social injustice.”

He also criticized those who seek to stop migrants fleeing persecution in the Middle East and North African from seeking a safe haven in Europe and other regions.

March 26, 2016 (San Diego’s East County) -- Three states held Democratic presidential caucuses today—and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders soundly defeated former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton by hefty margins in all three western states.  (There were no Republican matches today.)

In Alaska, Sanders won a whopping 81.6% of the vote, while Clinton took just 18.4% with 100% of precincts reported. Washington state was won by Sanders with 72.7% of the vote to Clinton’s 27.2% with 99% of precincts reporting.In Hawaii, Sanders won with 70% of the delegates to Clinton's 30%.

March 25, 2016 (San Diego’s East County) – Grossmont Union High School District Trustee Jim Kelly abused his authority as a public official, making false and slanderous statements during a public hearing March 17^th held by the County Office of Education’s Committee on School District Organization regarding the GUHSD’s controversial redistricting plan.

In the meeting, Kelly complained of “patent misinformation” and then proceeded to make bald-faced lies slandering East County Magazine and the integrity of our editor, Miriam Raftery. 

Below, we set the record straight--and provide our readers proof that the only person being dishonest here is Kelly.

March 25, 2016 (El Cajon) - Borrego Health announced the completion of the build-out of its flagship East County location in El Cajon, commonly known as Centro Medico El Cajon.   The completed project will increase capacity by up to 40%.  The El Cajon location currently sees 250 to 275 patients per day.

April 23, 2016 (San Diego) – Democratic presidential candidate and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders spoke to an enthusiastic crowd of over 13,000 people at the San Diego Convention Center last night, informing the crowd that his campaign is doing ”something unusual in politics. We are telling the truth.”  He then stated, “We cannot go forward as a nation unless we are willing to confront real issues.”  

In his opening remarks of a speech interrupted by frequent enthusiastic applause, Sanders took aim at voter suppression tactics on a day when long lines at minority polling places and other questionable tactics drew strong criticism in Arizona.

 “In America today, we are living under a corrupt primary campaign system which is undermining our democracy,” Sanders said.
