February 22, 2017 (Irvine, Calif.) - San Diego State was unable to recover from a five-run deficit after four innings as it dropped a 7-5 decision to UC Irvine Tuesday night at Anteater Ballpark. With the loss, the Aztecs evened their early season ledger at 2-2 while the Anteaters improved to 2-1.

SANTEE COUNCIL VOTES TO ACQUIRE LAND FOR MOVIE THEATERS

February 21, 2017 (Santee) – For the past 20 years, Santee has lacked an indoor movie theatre, having only a drive-in that’s a throw-back from the ‘50s. But soon, city residents will be able to choose from multiple films to view without leaving town or parking at the drive-in venue.

February 21, 2017 (Indianapolis) -- The Society of Professional Journalists and other journalism groups are urging officials in Cannon Ball, North Dakota, to allow journalists to do their jobs at Standing Rock.  SPJ and the Committee to Protect Journalists, Native American Journalists Association, National Press Photographers Association and Online News Association sent a letter today as the planned enforcement of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ evacuation order to protesters at the Dakota Access Pipeline camp in is underway.

February 20, 2017 (San Diego) - When people suffer spinal cord injuries and lose mobility in their limbs, it’s a neural signal processing problem. The brain can still send clear electrical impulses and the limbs can still receive them, but the signal gets lost in the damaged spinal cord.

February 20, 2017 (Santee) -- The Sheriff has issued this warning for Santee residents: 

 

If you live in Santee, be aware of increased law enforcement activity in your area. A SWAT Standoff is underway in the 8500 block of Massery Lane. Deputies were called to the home just after 9:00 a.m. following reports of a disturbance. A man is holed up inside the home possibly armed with a gun. He is the only person inside the house.

February 19, 2017 (Washington D.C.) – President Donald Trump has raised disturbing comparisons to notorious dictators and to disgraced President Richard Nixon with his unjustified attacks on respected, established media outlets as “fake news” and his repeated denouncements of  “dishonest media.”  

Worse yet, Trump’s tweet this week calling media an “enemy of the American people” has drawn sharp criticisms from  a Fox News anchor, his own Secretary of Defense, Republican Senator John McCain, and Carl Bernstein, the reporter whose investigation exposed the Watergate scandal that led to Richard Nixon’s resignation.

COUNTY SUPERVISORS POSTPONE ACTION ON COMMUNITY CHOICE AGGREGATION STUDY

February 19, 2017 (San Diego) -- On Wednesday, 2/15/17, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors entertained public input on their Comprehensive Renewable Energy Plan (CREP). Twenty-one members of the public provided comment. Twenty of those speaking urged the Supervisors to approve spending $200,000 on a Community Choice Aggregation (CCA, also known as Community Choice Energy) feasibility study. The completion of this kind of study is typically done prior to establishing a CCA program. Only one commenter opposed funding the study.

February 19, 2017 (Washington D.C.) – An outcry raised by citizens nationwide over the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s removal of all animal welfare records off its website, as well as a lawsuit filed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has resulted in partial restoration.  But the Humane Society says that’s not enough, and is threatening litigation to force the agency to restore records relied upon by the public and animal rights organizations.

February 19, 2017 (San Diego) -- The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office is seeking the public’s help in identifying an older man who was struck by an Amtrak train last Tuesday night in Oceanside.
