SAN DIEGO RIVER GUIDED MOTHER’S DAY HIKE MAY 13

May 11, 2012 (Lakeside) -- Lakeside’s River park Conservancy is presenting a free guided Mother’s Day hike on May 13 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.  River Park biologist, Monica Winters, will lead a five mile loop of the San Diego Riverbed in East County.

Winters will point out plants, birds and insects along the way.  All mothers will receive a beautiful native plant to take home.

May 8, 2012 (Lakeside) – The Sheriff’s Bomb and Arson squad has been called to the scene of a house fire in the 11000 block of Lakeside Avenue to investigate the cause of the blaze, the Sheriff’s Department has confirmed.

SWAT TEAM IN LAKESIDE; SUSPECT BARRICADED IN HOME NEAR LINDO LAKES

 Update 2:05 p.m. - The suspect is identified as Kenny Lee Walker, 45. 

"Deputies have the place surrounded and under containment. We're still trying to convince him to come out," Detective Tom Poulin told ECM. However the suspect has made threats to harm himself and officers. He says he's going to shoot it out with deputies and then shoot himself," said Poulin, who added that the suspect was wanted for slashing his wife's tires and is believed to be armed with a handgun.  

Update 10:50 a.m.  -- Lindo Lake Elementary and El Capitan High schools are on lockdown as a precaution, ECM news partner 10 News now reports.

May 7, 2012 (Lakeside) 10:40 a.m. – A suspect who wanted on a domestic violence charge has barricaded himself into a residence on Lakeshore Drive in Lakeside.  The suspect is believed to be armed. 

“They’re going to call a SWAT team out,” Detective Tom Poulin with the Sheriff’s substation in Santee told EC, while en route to the situation.  The suspect has been wanted for “a couple of days,” he added.

April 25, 2012 (San Diego's East County) -- The City of San Diego passed a resolution today declaring April 28th Creek to Bay cleanup day.  According to Council Member Sherri Leightner (District One) this “will encourage all residents of the City of San Diego to take care of the environment.”

PADRE DAM BOARD APPROVES NEW MEMORANDUMS OF UNDERSTANDING WITH EMPLOYEES’ ASSOCIATIONS

 
April 20, 2012 (Santee) -- The Padre Dam Municipal Water District’s Board of Directors approved new Memorandum’s of Understanding (MOU) between the District and the Padre Dam Employees’ Association (PDEA) and the Mid-Management and Confidential Association (MMCA) today. The new MOUs will facilitate a significant change, requiring employees’ to pay a larger portion into the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) among other items that will save ratepayer dollars.

April 20, 2012 (Lakeside)—“Animals suffer both physically and mentally throughout these barbaric, violent, `entertaining’ practices,” the Animal Rights Protection and Rescue League of San Diego has posted on its Facebook page, urging a boycott of the Lakeside Rodeo.  “They are incredibly scared, stressed, and uncomfortable.”

The group plans to stage protests tonight from 5-7:30 p.m. and again tomorrow from 12-2 p.m. and from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Registration begins at 8 a.m.and the run/walk starts at 9:00 a.m. All proceeds will benefit the award winning L-E-A-P arts education program in Lakeside District schools that provides artists-in-residence programs, field trips to view artistic performances and arts assemblies.

It reminds me of how it used to be in the old days with wide open fields, some farming and the best part is all the wildlife in the area--golden eagles, hawks and falcons, wild turkeys, deer and every once in a while a mountain lion or a bobcat.

February 28, 2012(Lakeside)--It’s no secret that El Capitan High School is a powerhouse when it comes to baseball in San Diego. Coming off a 2011 season in which the squad was ranked California's No. 18 team by ESPN’s CalHiSports and reached the San Diego Section CIF Division III finals, the Vaqueros are back in the CalHiSports state rankings again, this time in the preseason.

Led by reigning California Coaches Association State Baseball Coach of the Year Steve Vickery and 6-foot-5 senior southpaw Troy Conyers, the Vaqueros enter the season ranked No. 4 in California.

WOMAN RESCUED FROM ROLLOVER CRASH IN LAKESIDE

 

February 17, 2012 (Lakeside) – Firefighters from El Cajon and Lakeside Fire Departments utilized the jaws of life to free an injured motorist in a rollover accident on Aurora Drive.  The crash occurred around 2:30 p.m. yesterday.  The female driver was traveling west on Aurora when she failed to slow down at a sharp corner and hit a curb, causing her vehicle to flip over, according to the CHP.

LAKESIDE FIREFIGHTERS RESCUE TRAPPED DOG

 

 
February 17, 2012 (Lakeside) – Toby, a Shiba Inu dog belonging to Lakeside resident Tim Ellis and his wife is free, thanks to the efforts of Lakeside firefighters.  While chasing a squirrel, the dog got its head caught between rocks in an artificial waterfall.

OFFICERS SEARCHING FOR HIT AND RUN SUSPECT IN LAKESIDE


 
February 15, 2012 (Lakeside) –A manhunt is on for a hit-and-run driver following a collision at 7:56 p.m. at Highway 67 and Riverford Road involving a white car and a Toyota pickup. According to the CHP website, the suspect fled on foot and a search is on in the vicinity of Woodside Avenue.

NORTHBOUND HIGHWAY 67 RAMP TO I-8 WEST CLOSED SATURDAY MORNING

 Winner Achieves Nearly 50 Percent Energy Savings

January 5, 2012 (San Diego’s East County)– An energy efficiency program piloted by San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) succeeded in more than doubling energy savings among participating residential customers during a three-month period. Erica Faunce of Lakeside, Calif., was declared the Biggest Energy SaverSM contest winner in San Diego after achieving a 46.5 percent energy savings, equal to 1,356 kilowatt hours for her family of three, and won a new laptop computer.

GARAGE FIRE IN LAKESIDE

 Update 8:35 p.m.: The fire is now knocked down and residents are cleared to return to their residences.

January 7, 2012 (Lakeside)--Firefighters are on the scene of a garage fire  at 12097 Gay Rio Drive in Lakeside.  "The fire is putting up a lot of smoke and they're getting people out of the houses nearby," ECM photographer Dennis Richardson told ECM.

One person is reportedly suffering smoke inhalation and will be transported to a local hospital.

HUNTER AIDE KILLED IN LAKESIDE CAR WRECK

December 25, 2011 (Ramona)—Nelson Edward “Mac” MacWilliams, 54, has been identified by the Medical Examiner’s office as the driver who died December 20 in a rollover accident on Wildcat Canyon Road in Lakeside. RamonaPatch.com reports that MacWilliams worked in Congressman Duncan Hunter’s El Cajon office, handling military and veterans’ issues.

HOSPICE PATIENT KILLS SELF AFTER SWAT STAND-OFF IN LAKESIDE

November 23, 2011 (Lakeside) – A three hour stand-off with a SWAT team has ended with the suicide of a 75-year-old Lakeside man. The man, a hospice patient, reportedly had leukemia and had been told he had only days to live, a neighbor told 10 news.
