East County Seeks to Inspire the Next Generation of Manufacturers

September 30, 2018 (El Cajon) -- San Diego’s East County is kicking off Manufacturing Week by hosting the largest Manufacturing Expo in the County on Tuesday, October 2 at Allen Airways Flying Museum (2020 N. Marshall Ave.) in El Cajon from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The Expo brings together over 30 manufacturers ranging from the industrial and aerospace realm to candy and wine makers from throughout San Diego! The event is part of Manufacturing Day, a nation-wide effort to celebrate and showcase modern manufacturing and meant to inspire the next generation of manufacturers and skilled-workforce.

October 2, 2018 (El Cajon) – You’re invited to come swing with Santa at Sycuan Golf on Friday, November 2^nd on the Pine Glen par 3 executive course. The event will raise funds to St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center’s developmentally disabled students’ holiday celebration.

September 30, 2018 (El Cajon) – El Cajon Police officers responding to reports of a shooting near the 600 block of Emerald Avenue at 5:45 p.m. Saturday evening found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest. Paramedics responded and attempted life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead.

San Diego’s big cat and exotic animal sanctuary celebrates global animal welfare event with educational visits and blessing of animals

October 3, 2018 (Alpine) -- San Diego’s world renowned, non-profit big cat and exotic animal sanctuary, Lions Tigers & Bears is celebrating World Animal Day with a unique Blessing of the Animals and special promotion for visitors as part of an international effort to raise awareness and education about animal welfare. 

Father Jason Samuels of Christ the King Episcopal Church in Alpine will deliver a blessing to all the rescued animals at the sanctuary including lions, tigers, bears, bobcats, leopards, a mountain lion and more on Thursday, October 4 at 10:30 a.m.

September 28, 2018 (La Mesa) – Last week,  San Diego Union-Tribune writer Karen Pearlman posted a photo of a Tyrannosaurus Rex metal sculpture that mysteriously appeared in La Mesa at the future site of the La Mesa Summit Estates, raising the question of why the giant dinosaur statue had suddenly shown up in the Jewel of the Hills, as La Mesa is known.

September 28, 2018 (Ramona) -- The County has opened a stretch of trail in another section of Ramona Grasslands County Preserve. The Old Survey Road 97 Trail has been closed to the public due to many sensitive species including golden eagles that live and forage in the preserve. Now, the trail is available on a trial basis - to a limited number of people who pass a seasonal permit test - from 8 a.m. until sunset on Saturdays and Sundays now through Nov. 15. To visit, you must watch a quick video and take a short survey, confirming you understand the “dos” and “don’ts” of this unique wildlife habitat.

September 27, 2018 (Boulevard) – A 31-year-old La Mesa man died after his vehicle struck a metal guard rail on I-8 east near McCain Valley in Boulevard last night at 11:40 p.m.  He was ejected onto the roadway and died at the scene.

September 27, 2018 (El Cajon) -- The Haunted Amusement Park is opening its doors to the public Friday, September 28, 2018 with a big fundraising event for the non-profit group Team Parker for Life to help fund Childhood Cancer Research.

September 26, 2018 (Lakeside) – On Monday, September 24^th, Sheriff’s deputies conducting traffic enforcement at Ashwood Street and Willows Road in Lakeside pulled over a vehicle that ran a stop sign. A male passenger ran out of the vehicle and jumped the fence into the El Capitan High School campus just as students were being released.

September 25, 2018 (Alpine) - A person who played bingo at Viejas Bingo located in the Viejas Outlets and rode the Sun Charter San Diego North Line to the facility has been diagnosed with tuberculosis and may have exposed others, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced today.

September 24, 2018 (La Mesa) – The Boys and Girls Clubs of East County (BGCEC) has scheduled a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the end of 14 months of construction for its new Brady Family Clubhouse in La Mesa that houses the Gagon Academy, a learning center and homework room, and the Bill Walton Gymnasium.

September 23, 2018 (San Diego’s East County) – The November election could have high stakes in the San Miguel Fire Protection District.  A slate of three incumbents who voted to return the district to local control and axe a contract with Cal-Fire are running for reelection: Theresa McKenna, Jim Ek and Mike Vacio. All are backed by the district’s firefighters. Also in the race is William A. Kiel, son of board member William Kiel, who voted against ending the contract with Cal Fire.

September 22, 2018 (Jamul) – Cal Fire responded to a 911 all reporting a hiker in distress on a trail near Horse Thief Canyon off Lyons Valley Road near Jamul today. When they arrived, he was not breathing. Cal Fire personnel and Mercy medics attempted lifesaving measures, but could not revive him.

September 22, 2018 (San Diego’s East County) – Despite litigation over the Grossmont High School District’s failure to build an Alpine High School, the Alpine community failed to mount a challenger to trustee Jim Kelly, who represents Alpine after redistricting.  Trustee Robert Shield is also running unopposed.

But trustee Gary Woods, who represents the El Cajon area in district 3 and directs a religious educational institute,  faces a challenge from Peggy “Liz” Weaver, a public school teacher of fourth and fifth graders at Rancho Elementary School.
