June 13, 2012 (San Diego) -- Tickets are on sale now for the Kris Kristofferson & Friends concert series to benefit the 50th anniversary of the United Farm Workers (UFW). The tickets are available at http://www.ufw.org, and limited VIP seats are available. The San Diego area tickets for the concert on Friday, June 15th are also available at Spreckles Theater. The San Diego concert will begin at 8:00 p.m. and will feature Mariachi Divas.

June 12, 2012 (San Diego’s East County) – A complaint by East County Magazine reader Mary Rajknecht has led Wal-Mart to agree to pull flammable “sky lanterns” off store shelves statewide. Rajknecth notified ECM and local fire officials that the product could be dangerous in our fire-prone area, prompting a warning from the state Fire Marshal's office to be issued.

Resources are being stripped from local areas and it’s important that homeowners do their part to mitigate the threat of wildfire protecting their property and to those that fight these fires with limited budgets due to our economy.
June 13, 2012 (San Diego) -- La Mesa resident Chuck McPherson took the First Place Award at the San Diego Watercolor Society’s June Member Show with his painting Trickle Down Effect. The juror recognized Chuck’s painting for excellent design and how he captured the texture of the rounded rocks and depth in the stream. More of Chuck’s work can be seen at his website http://artthatsells.net. Chuck will be demonstrating at the San Diego Fair June 23, 11-6; June 24, 11-6; July 3, 12-4 and July 4 from 12–4.

June 13, 2012 (Ocotillo) – Why hasn’t the Bureau of Land Management taken steps to protect Ocotillo area residents from clouds of dust in an area with high rates of childhood asthma and where soil reportedly contains potentially deadly Valley Fever spores?
Despite numerous complaints including photos and videos of dust billowing up from construction activities at Pattern Energy’s Ocotillo Express wind energy site, the apparent health hazard continues.
June 12, 2012 (Lakeside)—Savoring flame-broiled, 100% Angus beef burgers at Steers, an Australian-based eatery that opened its first American restaurant in Lakeside last weekend, I predict that Steers will soon be rounding up a herd of loyal new customers.
After opening outlets in Australia and South Africa, the owners moved to La Jolla and scouted out an ideal location for their first U.S. venture. The site of the former Lakeside Steak House has been fully remodeled, serving up juicy burgers, espetadas (a shish-kabob like creation) and coming soon, steaks sizzling on the barbie.

June 12, 2012 (El Cajon) – A brush fire this evening at Lavala Lane and Highway 8 Business loop in El Cajon charred at least two acares, forcing evacuations in the area briefly, Incident Page Network reported. Helicopters dropped water on the blaze, swiftly bringing it under control.
Heartland Fire Dispatch reports units are now being released from the scene.
June 12, 2012 (El Cajon) – On June 11 a suspect, Phillip Murphy of El Cajon, was arrested in the series of hot prowl burglaries in El Cajon and the surrounding areas which have occurred over the past two weeks.The arrest was made by Officer D. Thompson after responding to a call of a suspect attempting to gain entry into a home on Joanne Way, El Cajon.

June 12, 2012 (Jacumba)–Residents of this rural town are “cautiously” optimistic after receiving written confirmation from the San Diego Department of Environmental Health [DEH] that Bornt Farms will soon cease operations in Jacumba. The reason given by the farmer is “water supply constraints” according to DEH.
But the eye gnat plague has worsened as Bornt has halted mitigation efforts—so residents’ woes are not yet over. Bornt’s withdrawal always raises questions about the future of his land—and who will be the townspeople’s new neighbor.

Attacker believed to have met his victim at McGregor’s Bar & Grill
June 12, 2012 (San Diego) -- Detectives from the San Diego Police Department’s Eastern Division have released photos of a man wanted as a “person of interest” in the attempted homicide of a Grantville woman last month. On May 13, officers responded to a call that a female victim, 34, had been found unconscious in her apartment. Severely beaten, the woman remained unconscious for almost three weeks and sustained brain damage from the attack.

June 12, 2012 (Spring Valley ) – San Diego Sheriff’s Department is investigating the whereabouts of Rebecca Faye Alford, also known as Fatima Garcia.Reported missing, she was last seen Monday, June 11 at 10:30 p.m. at her residence in the Lamplighter Village Park, 10767 Jamacha Blvd. in Spring Valley.
Homicide detail is investigating the case.The missing woman, 41, has red hair and hazel eyes. She is described as light-skinned, 5 feet 6 inches tall, weight 125 pounds. A 1999 black Ford F159 with license plate #67216A1 may also be involved.
June 11, 2012 (San Diego’s East County)—Last month, a tragic incident in Florida, now nationally known as the ‘Florida Zombie Attack’, has been attributed to a dangerous drug most commonly known as ‘bath salts’. But just how dangerous is this new drug? Are we all in danger of such a horrific attack like that in Florida?
Use of ‘bath salts’ has been dramatically increasing. The American Association for Poison Control Centers took 303 calls about the drug in 2010; while in the first eight months of 2011, 4,720 calls were received regarding use of such synthetic drugs. Local and national authorities now warn the public about an alarming rise in serious health reactions and violent incidents linked to these drugs. But what are they, exactly, and what makes them so dangerous?
June 12, 2012 (El Cajon) 9:35 a.m. – Power remains out in parts of El Cajon following a transformer fire this morning. Heartland Fire & Rescue crews in El Cajon responded to reports of a transformer fire in the 200 block of Lincoln Avenue in El Cajon. As crews arrived, they found not only the transformer fire, but downed power lines and a resulting vehicle fire.
June 11, 2012 (Tecate)—A Mexican newspaper reports that a forest fire which began east of Tecate on the Mexican side of the border has consumed hundreds of square meters of vegetation, including wildland areas and crops. The blaze is burning toward Mexicali; cause is unknown.

June 12, 2012 (El Cajon)--Many of the restaurants in downtown El Cajon opened their doors several years ago because of the proximity of the East County Performing Arts Center (ECPAC) on Main Street. One of those is Domenico Donato’s “Mangia Bene” Italian restaurant located directly across from the theater which opened a decade ago.

June 11, 2012 (La Mesa)—La Mesa Police Department reports that a Special Enforcement Detail arrested 26 people last month. The unit targets gangs, drug deals, and serial criminals. After executing four search warrants, the unit resulted in seizure of over $20,000 in drug sales cash, two guns, over 7 ounces of methamphetamine, 5 pounds of marijuana, and 2.2 ounces of heroin.

June 11, 2012 (San Diego)--San Diego Jewish Academy (SDJA) eighth grade student Jonah Kohn was recently notified that he is one of five finalists in his age group out of a total 15 finalists in the 2012 Google Science Fair, which received thousands of entries from over 100 countries worldwide.
His project, Good Vibrations: Improving the Music Experience for People with Hearing Loss Using Multi-Frequency Tactile Sound, has the potential to affect millions of people with hearing loss by enhancing their ability to enjoy music.
